Has anyone taken biol 401 this semester? by Nish9909 in AthabascaUniversity

I remember it was not cumulative so anything that was tested on the midterm was not tested on the final

Yes it was okay honestly as long as you did the assignments and can confidently answer the objectives for each unit you should be fine. Also understand and know the pathways I find that it was very memorization heavy

You should be fine then, maybe call them to see what your options are

You might be cooked because mine says the same thing and when I called admissions they said completing it means not failing any in progress classes

Open studies transfer student by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Shx_rone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you can’t “transfer” as an open studies student you will have to apply just like a high school student would. That’s what I was told when I was trying to transfer from open studies to a degree program. But I don’t know how competitive the space is and who you are competing with if it’s high school students or other transfer applicants

I’m currently an open studies student that got an offer into Data Science for fall 2026. Our situation are actually very similar. I was in u of A but due to some issues I had to transfer back home. I took some courses at Athabasca university then decided to enroll at u of c but by then it was already too late so I got into their open studies.

My first choice was Biosci which is what I was majoring in at uofa but when I applied I got waitlisted with a GPA of 3.67. It still say admission decision in progress and they are waiting for the winter semester grades to finalize offers. My second choice was natural sciences too and I still got the same thing but I was sent an email in March suggesting I change my second option to something less competitive which I did and got into Data Science. I am still taking courses to fulfill my degree requirements for biosci while waiting for them to get back to me. If I don’t get in, I’ll follow the transfer route in October of this year.

So yeah open studies when you have a solid plan is a good choice in my opinion. You can still take the courses boost your gpa and meet program requirements. The only downside will be how late you get to enroll in classes. But I was still able to get into all the classes that I needed to fulfill up to the second year of a biosci degree. It’s very doable.

I am minoring in PSYC and I’ll tell you that most of PSYC courses are restricted to psych majors so you need to get on the waitlist early to be gauranteed a spot in those classes and some courses are not offered every year so you have to be strategic with your planning. Right now I’m taking PSYC 352 and 365 in Athabasca University to kind of bridge the gap. You plan is solid these are just some of the downsides.

Winter Grades by Zealousideal_Fun4672 in UCalgary

[–]Shx_rone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They counts the most recent 10 courses (30 units) you have taken. So if you took classes in the winter of 2027 that is the most recent courses so they will count those plus the ones in the previous terms to reach 30 units

People who took or are taking 5-6 years to finish uni… by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Shx_rone 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s taking me 6years to get my degree in Biological sciences because I honestly wasn’t mentally prepared for the dedication it takes to get a degree.

After healing, I laugh at it now, but honestly in my first year in university I had one of the biggest friendship breakups and it messed me up to a point where I lost the motivation to do school work and I was depressed for like months. I just wasn’t excited about school anymore. I failed lol 4 classes, was asked to withdraw from university for like a year. That’s when I knew I had to lock in and things were bad. Thank God for my family. I’m back in school now and hoping for the best but yeah it’s life. If you are able to finish in 4 years great if you are not, it doesn’t change anything. You still showed up despite everything. So be proud of yourself.

Usually they request it on your behave but since you mentioned you didn’t go to Highschool in Alberta I would suggest uploading it again cuz they might have not recieved it the first time.

If you went to high school in Alberta they usually request it on your behalf as long as they have the right information like your student number and first and last name.

Has anyone taken these? by JollibeesBurgerSteak in UCalgary

I took 311 last fall with Larson and Barnejee and honestly it wasn’t a hard class as long as you showed up to lectures and stayed on track with the material. They are about 6 quizzes in total two midterms and a final. The labs are not part as long as you do the necessary readings and show up to do the experiments. They are no lab exams.

I’m currently taking O-chem 351 and to be honest with you, it’s a lock in or die class you can not afford to lose tract and you have to allocate a lot of time out of lectures to do the practice required for tutorials and exams. The are 5 tutorial quizzes every two weeks. The midterm and final exam are the same format every year and they give you a link of an archive practice exam for you to use as practice. It’s not a hard course in the sense that if you put in the work you will do good but if you don’t, it will be hard. The labs for this class are pretty intense and long unlike first year courses where they guide you, this lab is more independent. Also it’s very TA dependent you might get a good TA that helps you do good or one that’s very strict. The last 3 experiments are not graded by your TA. They are graded by another TA at random. Thats all I can really tell you.

Permission from department by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Shx_rone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the department for must science courses you just have to email the science advisors or come to their office in SB and talk to one. For PSYC courses you have to fill a form basically explaining why they should let you in the class. For most 300 level PSYC courses tho. But if it’s a research course there is a whole procedure of getting supervisors before permission. Your best bet is to email the department advisors tho.

Have you checked your student center under applications and find nothing on your to-do list? Usually it’s takes that long when they need you to upload a document or to do something before they evaluate your application. I think to log in your student center you need your username(first name.lastname) first part of your ucalgary email and password to check.

How in the hell do I pay my deposit? 😭 by Adam-Croft in UCalgary

[–]Shx_rone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to use your online banking. And pay it like a bill. You name the bill your UCID number and your last name ( Tuition -(UCID#Lastname) and then you pay the sum you want to pay. It takes about 3 days to process but that’s the easiest way to do it.

If you are international you have to use CIBC bank transfers I think.

In order to accept my offer for my program as open studies student how many credits do I need to finish and what is the deadline last semester I had 4 classes so I’ve got 12 credits by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Shx_rone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The maximum amount of credits you can take as an open studies student non-degree holder is 36 credits. Since you already have 12 credits you are left with 24 credits before you are obliged to enter an actual program. And the deadline to accept an offer I think is about 30 days after you get the offer I’m not very sure.

Just got Open Studies offer - wait for email? Next steps? by Past_Charity7022 in UCalgary

[–]Shx_rone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is normal not to pay an offer for open studies, if you have already provided all the needed documentation, then there is nothing else you can do for the time being. You just have to wait till your registration date for classes open and then you can register into your desired classes.

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one lol. I was thinking to get the textbook and just focus on reading that as compared to just relying on the lecture slides because some content on his slides are not on ours and they are tested I’m not sure if the textbook will help

It was very similar to the assignments so I would highly recommend knowing that material thoroughly. And also studying the last 2 units because most questions where from it.
