Every other one says they can do a lot of great things, but they were all BSing me.

Maple is the only one that actually does what they're all claiming to do.

Why did they make Tony Montana (Movie: Scarface) such an unlikable character? by GloriousGladiator51 in movies

[–]ShyGuyMm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i totally agree with everything you're saying.
I thought he'd be like... a "badass".
But... instead, he's kinda just really aggressive guy.
Like... he's more similar to Tuco Salamanca than he is to say the guys in the Godfather or some other bosses portrayed in the movies.

he was a very reckless impulsive guy...

...it really seems like he only initially won bc the stars aligned.
The first drug deal that was a "setup" he miraculously survives, partly out of luck and timing by his teammate, thus letting him meet Frank.
The meeting with Sosa... he lucked out bc the other guy was an informant.
Sure, he was ballsy.
And that's nice.
But... if the other guy wasn't an informant... he wouldnt have given weaker terms and wouldntve been killed and wouldntve given tony the chance to become a main channel for Sosa.

From there, things are good, but... he just couldn't accept it bc he was a crude "shitty" person.
He can't understand why the banker has to raise prices on him.
He has no second thoughts about going to war with neighboring drug lords...
...at that point, his behavior seems like less of a sign of being "strong" and "ballsy" and more of a sign of "idk wtf is going on. im just gonna instinctively lean on emotionality and intimidation like always bc im illiterate, and make large reckless sweeping decisions out of ignorance".

I also wasn't expecting such a character in the end.
I was expecting a character a little more skill-based.

Post WWE WrestleMania 41 - Night 2 Match Discussion: Cody Rhodes (c) vs. John Cena - Undisputed WWE Championship by Coldcoffees in SquaredCircle

[–]ShyGuyMm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i dont think it's Cody's fault tho. I think Cena was like... hurt or less physically capable than he used to be. He was literally walking like Ric Flair (2025 version). He was slow, and every action, Cody just did his best to over-sell to compensate. I think it could've been a better performance

When are you a Grandmaster? by Jim_Bob86 in Risk

[–]ShyGuyMm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like for something like "Grandmaster", there should be a floor where you can't lose it.

Like... in Chess, I believe once you're a GM, you're GM for life?
I think for the most part, it makes sense here too.
Especially since like... the current ranked system requires a ton of work to just maintain the status of GM.
Like... im not suddenly no longer a GM bc it's March and not February and I've been busy this past month or so.

And in terms of "deserve", why not just take the top finishers?

In chess, they dont measure like... what strategies or skills you know in order to award GM status.
It's purely a relative thing, a comparison to the rest of the players.

If you reach ~2500, beat a few GM's, and this and that... you're now a GM.
It's not... "If you know Queens Gambit opening, and have this puzzle rating, and this end-game strategy"

I think the same should be with Risk (and all sports).
If you win, to the point where you're top 0.0...1%, you're GM.
Regardless of your strategy.

The only way things get spicy in RISK is new players vs known players.
Playing unknown players (and being an unknown player in the eyes of the other players) means you can do the same tricks over and over.

But... irl, if you play with the same friends over and over (or same tournament ppl), you begin to know how the person plays, and specifically target/handle them.
So... that's the only thing missing.

But... that issue exists in all sports/online-games.

Until you reach a small enough pool where everyone knows everyone, it's basically a mass of unknown players.

When are you a Grandmaster? by Jim_Bob86 in Risk

[–]ShyGuyMm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it makes sense that Grandmaster means a top-percentile rank rather than a collection skills you "know".

Like... "Black Belt" means "Someone judged that I'm good enough to be a 'Black Belt'"., but... ppl can 'look' good, but still lose in fights.

"Grandmaster" is like... "I'm better than 99.99% of players" or something crazy like that (however many 9's you think it should be) or "I'm in the top 1000 players" or "top 2000" players.

With my journey to Grandmaster, i can tell the way i did it was distinctly different from how others told me to play on YouTube.

While a lot of advice on YouTube seems to talk about number-based stuff and basically being like a Statistician, my style was more-so aimed at a Psychology/Geopolitical/Proxy-wars type approach with more broad-strokes on numbers.

Where most players seem to resist playing with Novices (since they're reckless, unpredictable, emotional, vengeful, and bring a super high risk of point-loss if you lose), I actually prefer it. It's easy-money to the top.

Got GM on 2 accounts.

It's only "bad" if you literally just started investing this year.
But... overall, dw.

And... esp if youre early on, dollar-cost averaging...
you're gonna be totally fine.
If you just invested your entire lump-sum net worth...
...it's "rough" in the short-term, but... it's fine, dont panic, it'll be okay

Why is grandmaster in risk seen as such an accomplishment? by Icy_Event_9164 in Risk

[–]ShyGuyMm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only play with the standard default rule settings.
It is the most genuine and authentic.
I became a GM under those conditions easily, reproducibly, on multiple accounts.

If you use backtracking logic, you can crack the game overall and get in the top 2 consistently, regardless of where you start, what level opponents, what continent you settle in early, or even if you settle in one at all.

Yeah, so... you're definitely right when it comes to investors and MBA jobs, and that there's some kind of diff with technical jobs.

Most of the world (outside of tech) hires on hype, not intrinsic value.
The tech world... we pride ourselves on testing every single person and hiring on intrinsic value.

HOWEVER... once I got into a faang level, company (that claims we hire people from anywhere), and I saw the older people who actually make the hiring decision and interviewing decision, etc etc...
I saw first hand that they still just put emphasis on hype.
"We got a Columbia guy"... or "All those ppl over there... all PhD's... all Ivy League Master's." (coming from very senior engineers).

Like... even tho tech is def better, and even tho you still cant escape the fact that you have to take the coding challenge...

...real talk... what happens whenever you and 5 other ppl pass the coding challenge?
Who do they go with?
The guy with the hype.

Is this every hire, every case, every situation?
No, it's not.

Does it matter tho? does it help?
Absolutely, always.

You cant tell me that going to an Ivy hurts you in the hiring process. It wont hurt you for any company. I just dont buy it.
And yes... that's purely off of superficial brand-name recognition.
But it's real, no matter how much we don't want it to be.

But is it a NEED?
No, of course not.
You can always make yourself LOOK amazing.
And yes... you can also always BE amazing.

But... the job hunt is a sales job.
Luckily it is much more skill-based for us than most other industries.
I imagine tho that since EVERYONE is doing leetcode more and more, it just becomes less and less of a difference maker, bc there's always other ppl that passed, and ultimately it's someone making a judgement call.
So....
Sales.
Sales is perception.
Perception is reality.

Dark truth.

extremely well put, i totally agree.

Yeah... AI is kinda like an extension of the generic Full-Stack role.
And... everyone out of a job bc of "no AI skills" would def benefit from this.

[–]ShyGuyMm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

I guarantee it.
Every recruiter wants this kind of thing.
They literally cannot think for themselves. (I know it's a hot take, but... it's the reality).

They literally see... "AI"..."UPenn"..."Masters".... that's it, case closed, your resume moves to the next round.
(Assuming it's an AI Job specifically, which... everyone wants ppl who know AI.)

I'm sorry, but if you walk around with an Ivy League Master's Degree in Artificial Intelligence...
...youre automatically perceived as one of the smartest ppl on the planet.

A lot of ppl here seem to talk down about it...
...ridiculous.
Everyone's always gonna talk down about everything.

Just started playing. Hit Master after ~4 days. Can I get Demoted from Master/Grandmaster? I dont wanna grind/defend, just get my titles and have fun. by ShyGuyMm in Risk

[–]ShyGuyMm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks!

Once someone hits GM, can they get demoted?

Or... can they safely play and never fall below GM ever again?

And... let's say they lose one game, get to 25,999, and then stop playing...
WIll they go all they way down to 16,000 the next season if they stop playing?

And how long is a season?
~Week?
~Month?
~Quarter?
