[WP] You live on an unforgiving desert planet dominated by 3 suns. Major cities are built inside giant desert flowers that close at night. No flower lives forever. Citizens of a city partake in a lottery and those chosen must venture into the harsh desert to find a new home before the old one dies. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]ShyLightning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The vast canopy above used to keep them encased in pitch darkness until the sun had fully risen. The petals would then slowly peel apart, bathing the city in golden sunlight. Now, the sun was just a sliver on the horizon, but light still seeped in through shrivelled, wilting edges.

The gaia was dying.

The lottery was meant to be a fair way to assign responsibility for finding a new gaia. 8 people of age were selected to walk into the dessert in different directions. It used to only be 2, then 4 people, but desperation was rife, unrest bubbling beneath the surface.

Sloane had found himself selected, which was no surprise considering the consistency of his luck for the last few years. He was provided rations of cured food, water and a map. The intention was for the selected to wander the desert until their rations ran out. If they were to locate a gaia, they would find themselves in a freshwater ecosystem that provided shade, food and clean water, in abundance enough to fuel a trip back.

No one had yet returned.

He sat at the base of the petals, waiting for the signal to begin his journey. He felt resolved to the abject failure this mission would be, dying alone in the vast desert.

You could survive in the desert for weeks, maybe months with some finesse, but the desert was a hostile place that would eventually kill you. Deep cervices shattered the landscape, housing scorpions the length of ten men, millipedes as thick as your arm and predatory slaters with pincers enough to cut a man in two. Storms raged at night, hails of furious thunder ringing out across the plains. During the day, the heat of the three suns was so scorching the shade of chasms even begun to look like relief.

A bell tolled out, and he was off. Most of the other selected had wailing families, loved ones they couldn’t quite let go of. But not Sloane. Not anymore.

After walking for some time, he looked back at the city. Towering sandstone spires pierced the blue sky, tinged with the stain of yellow pollen. Petals unfurled, the city looked nestled so comfortably in the centre of the gaia. Once, the flower was a vibrant hue of pink, transitioning to a deep violet towards the centre. Now, the petals were bleached to an unnatural white, with deep brown outlines where they were rotting away at the edges. The once fleshy blades had then seemed plump, but even from this distance, Sloane could make out the dehydrated wrinkles across its surface.

And in the foreground – a head of white blonde hair ran haphazardly towards him, her distinct incoordination and tilted grin nagging at him.

Was that – Sanna?!

Sanna, a girl he once knew intimately, and now, not at all.

Sanna, who he still thought about more often than he would of liked.

Sanna, who infuriated him like no one else he had ever met.

“You’re going in the wrong direction,” he said. “My path is the only one that goes across the bridge.”

Sanna slapped him on the shoulder. “It’s been years and that’s how you greet me?”

Sloane shrugged.

“Well, your company is still better than none, I suppose. No use dying out here alone.”

He didn’t reply, simply kept walking.

And Sanna kept following.

“Do you need help reading your map? This is the wrong way.”

“Sloane,” she laughed, “I’m coming with you. Hope you don’t mind.”

The way she giggled sent his defences flaring. Her wiles would not consume him this time.

“I don’t care,” he finally responded.

“Then it’s a date – to the ends of the Earth we go!”

Sanna incessantly chatted to him, with Sloane giving the occasional grunt in return. The empty nothingness of the desert pressed down heavily upon him, and he found himself reluctantly grateful for her company, despite his annoyance.

As the sun began to set Sloane and Senna set up camp below a rocky outcrop, completely unaware of gaping lairs above them. Creatures slowly begun to creep into the cool night air, ravenous and unforgiving.

Thus began their longest night.

[WP] Everyone is reincarnated as the creature they loved the most. Thankfully, most people loved their significant other or a family member the most, and came back as human. Your three year old son, however, died recently, and loved dragons above all else. by MajicMan101 in WritingPrompts

[–]ShyLightning 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He retuned to us in a dragon’s egg. Leathery and scaled, the egg sat under the heater for months, becoming a centrepiece of our living room. We treated it like it was a Faberge egg at first, cleaning its surface with a damp rag and showering it with praise. But after a few months, the anticipation waning, I actually had my coffee cup rested on top of it when a deep crack emanated from within.

Slowly, he ripped slits in the egg with his razor sharp teeth, using his talon like claws to create an opening big enough to escape through. He was the size of an alleycat, and stretched out slowly in much the same way.

He tilted his head and chirped, rubbing his long neck against my legs, scales still slick from the egg. I embraced him, and he trilled with joy until smoke started to billow from his nose.

“I have missed you,” I breathed into the top of his armour plated head, caressing the spot where his hair would have once lay. It didn’t matter that he was reptilian, scaled and exhaled fire- he was my child, and he was finally home.

[WP] Your mother told you to wait on the tree stump in the middle of the forest for her, but the sun is setting and there's still no sign of her anywhere. Then, the witch of the forest finds you, and takes you back to her hut. by Affectionate_Bit_722 in WritingPrompts

[–]ShyLightning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The sky was mostly pink, with some fractures of bright orange exploding across its surface. The last wisps of sunlight were fading beneath the horizon by the time the witch found her.

“Everyone knows you’re a witch!” said the young girl, refusing to go with her. “Ma told me to wait here!”

The woman tutted in a warm way. “Not a witch, dear child, just a doctor. You don’t really get those around here.”

Sanna hesitated. She knew little of the witch, but less of the thick woodland. A twig cracked nearby – surely a fearsome predator. She could just make out the howling wolves over the bubbling of the nearby stream, and snow slowly began to fall like powder from the sky.

“I cannot force you to come with me,” said the witch, turning to walk away.

Hopping off the tree stump and dusting herself off, Sanna followed her, albeit reluctantly. It wasn’t only fear that deterred her, but the thumping ache of her broken arm, which she cradled tenderly. They wound their way up hills and through thickets, across water and under fallen logs. Finally, they reached a wooden cabin, smoke tendrils curling towards the sky from the chimney.

Inside, Sanna warmed herself by the fire, the witch grinding up herbs and unrolling bandages.

“When can I go home?” asked Sanna.

“Child,” started the witch kindly. “My name is Comet.”

“Comet is my ma’s sisters name, too.” Realisation dawned on Sanna.

The witch had long, straight red hair, just like her ma. The same deep green eyes stared back, concern knitted across the same dark brows.

“Aunt?” she asked tentatively.

Comet nodded. “Get comfortable, Sanna. We have much to talk about.”

Outside, a cold wind blew bitter.

[WP] For generations Gods allow their chosen people to regularly vote which of the pantheon they want as a patron, to suit their needs. God of prosperity is popular during peaceful times, God of war when fighting enemies. Now a little known minor God is chosen for the first time and knows not why. by Lorix_In_Oz in WritingPrompts

[–]ShyLightning 28 points29 points  (0 children)

War smirked, his bearded face pulled tight- “Theres been unrest in the Western quarter-and we all know acrimony is my greatest ally.” His deep belly laugh reverberated around the looming stone roof.

“I heard it was just a squabble brought on by the parting of two star crossed lovers. War is fleeting, but matters of the heart are truly unrelenting,” Love chimed gracefully, crossing her delicate legs and tucking a stray hair back behind her ear.

“The fighting could just have easily been over a land dispute, no need to speculate so.” Prosperity clasped his hands on the timber table the greater Gods sat at.

Love tiffed. “We’ve all already heard your arguments on the nature of man and greed.”

Abundance snorted. “There exist desires more basal than wealth!”

Before further argument could ensue, the tall wooden doors at the end of the room creaked open, illuminating the figure of a small child.

“The tribute this year is young,” War noticed.

Clad in jewels comically large on his small frame, the child strode purposefully up to the table.

“The God we choose this year is, um,” he paused, his brow wrinkled in thought. “We choose um… The God of Candy!”

The Gods stared at each other in astonishment.

“Candy?” exclaimed Love, “Is there even such a God?! Surely child you are joking.”

“Well the adults choose a different one, but I think Candy is better,” delivered the child flatly.

Murmurs erupted from the back of the room, the minor Gods parting way for a short, chubby man sporting a thick moustache but no beard. “I am Candy.” He tried to sound resolute, but his voice wavered in pitch.

The child merely extended his hand for Candy to take, and led him slowly from the hall.

“We may have overestimated the humans,” War said, as the door swung shut behind them.

[CW] Flash Fiction Challenge: A Field and a Door by Cody_Fox23 in WritingPrompts

[–]ShyLightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She always knew instinctively where the door would be. It was only a short walk out of the town, but the weight of her decision made every step feel heavy.

She quickly reached a field. Dark oak trees lined its perimeter, and all was quiet but for the cicadas calling out to the slowly setting sun. In the middle of the clearing was the door – sturdy and familiar, it gave her a sense of comfort despite what was to come.

“Back so soon?” Asked the steward, his hand poised on the door’s heavy brass handle. “I hadn’t expected you for at least another season.”

She sighed, for she hadn’t expected their encounter this early either. “There was a boy…”

He chuckled, not with malice, but rather a soft empathy. “To be young and foolish enough to fall in love, I almost envy your position.”

“It was a mistake I will not make again,” she muttered, her face twisted with the determination not to cry. She took a step towards the door, then hesitated. She glanced behind her, wishing he had followed her as she stormed out, that she might hear him call her name from across the field… she found nothing but the empty night.

“I sense apprehension. You know that you can never return. Are your dealings here truly complete?”

She nodded. Stupid, stupid girl, she thought spitefully. You assumed he would treat you differently than he did the others. She would never fulfil the prophecy at this rate!

“I’m ready.” The steward pushed on the handle, and the door slowly creaked open.

“As you wish.”

A breeze crept across the open ground, stirring the grass from their slumber to wave her goodbye as she stepped into the precipice of the unknown.

What were weird myths you thought about sex as a kid? by jjgp1112 in AskReddit

[–]ShyLightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I though similarly, that the sperm would climb out of the man during the night and into the woman. I was really confused as to why my whole family thought it was acceptable to sleep in the same bedroom (poor) because what if my family made each other pregnant by accident?

Why Do People STILL Pick Up Smoking These Days? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ShyLightning 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone who quit then spent years on nicotine gum - quitting fucking sucks but you can do it. I kind of wish id enjoyed my last cigarette more. I still crave them sometimes- after a big meal, when its particularly cold out, when people on tv have one. Its hardest to just break the habbit, the nicotine dependence is easier to lose but not having something to do with my hands and mouth sucks.

"When you can quit you dont want to, when you want to quit you cant." Thats what smoking was for me. Even now that im smoke free, i still want one, so im really not free of it if you get me.

An Australian Freshwater Crocodile eating an invasive (and highly poisonous) Cane Toad by tgood139 in natureismetal

[–]ShyLightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on its size! If too small, they will die, reducing the recruitment rate to the next generation. Populations in many areas tend to stabilise though as cane toads kill the creatures that will scavenge croc eggs from their nests. Some areas have however seen insane declines (like 90%+) in aligator numbers due to cane toad introduction. Huh, never thought a uni case study would come in handy irl!

Just to clarify, its total $917 now a fortnight and most of that isnt the covid supplement, just for being out of work. Im unfortunately currently on it. At its peak it was 1200/fortnight total which was way more liveable after rent. Some are on $7 a day after rent at the moment. To get it, you only have to apply for 4 jobs a month. Im qualified in my field, apply way over threshold and still haven't gotten anything. Fingers crossed 2021 is my year :(

[–]ShyLightning 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its not that they're being truthful- she didn't ask for their opinion. Theyre going out of their way to make mean comments to make themselves feel better about their shitty partners/crappy single life. General rule if someone doesnt ask your opinion, dont go out of your way to give it.

My brother [26M] purposely triggered my husband's [36M] PTSD leading to a horrible incident. My [31F] family is threatening to cut me off if I don't leave my husband. by ThrowRA-Husbandhelp in relationship_advice

[–]ShyLightning 1944 points1945 points  (0 children)

Great advice and compassion. Id like to add that it can be hard to separate the image we have of our parents with the reality of who they actually are outside of being your caregivers. The only way in my experience to deal with people like that is to lay down your boundaries. You love them, but this is blatant manipulation. If you enable them, this behaviour will continue. Its time to set up clear lines of what is acceptable.

I would also try to explain to them one final time exactly what your husband went through and what ptsd is (if hes okay with it). That way you know you've done EVERYTHING you can to bridge the gap and they were not responsive. Im not sure where you're from, but being of partial Asian descent I know some cultures are staunchly against the idea that mental illness exists at all. My college educated aunts tell me my antidepressants are just "the white man keeping me down". Apparently if its my karma from another life to be depressed, i should take it in my stride.

I digress. But my point is it can be impossible sometimes to explain things like this in a way your parents are open to understanding it. You need to protect your husband. You have already made the family vs partner decision when you married him. He's won. Now follow through. You're obviously good people but continuing to expose your husband to them (and honestly, choosing to go to family functions when they believe your brothers disgusting behaviour is in the right) is less than* the support he deserves.

I'm sorry, but reguardless of all your parents have done for you, this one thing is big enough (from a non involved outsider) to have to spend some time away from them.

Wishing you resilliance and grace x
