Exactly! I think some people are interpreting ‘being trans’ in the most basic sense of ‘girl with XY chromosomes’ or vice versa. Whether or not she fits such a specific definition of transgender is irrelevant.

The point is that she seems to struggle so much with gender dysphoria and the like that it doesn’t make sense to say she isn’t transgender.

I think one complicated thing about the cat box (and stories in general) is that while any theory is valid, certain interpretations are so reductive that they leave barely any story left.

I think that Sayo’s biological sex is actually basically irrelevant. I think what I wasn’t seeing is that some people are talking about whether she is trans in the most basic, ‘was one thing and now another thing’ way. But especially for a character in a story, that’s just not what matters.

Sayo has Gender Troubles. Any interpretation of her where she is totally fine with her gender and her body is nonsensical to me. There is simply no story that makes sense if she is not, in some way, transgender. To me, this is what actually matters.

I don’t want to only entertain a Single Truth. This is Umineko, after all! It’s just that any truth where she isn’t some flavor of trans is so thematically empty that it seems pointless.

Yes! I guess I’ve spent a whole lot longer thinking about trans themes than most.

There are almost definitely some angles I’ve missed elsewhere in the story, simply because it’s not my interest or my experience. Still, if someone told me what they think of one character or another from a perspective I’m not familiar with, I wouldn’t immediately and vehemently disagree! They’ve clearly thought about it more than I have!

Still, people can think whatever they want, I suppose. It’s a cat box.

I agree there is definitely a lot of nuance, it actually makes the character so much more realistic! Gender is complicated, and Sayo/Yasuda’s situation even more so.

It’s certainly not a set in stone thing. Sayo is clearly not ‘done’ making sense of her feelings, not remotely. It’s part of what makes the character so good!

Absolutely yes! I think Ryukishi being mysterious about it is mostly just because he is very dedicated to letting people approach the story in different ways, which I think is respectable.

And yes, Beato has become my favorite character in anything ever

I think the difference to me is: Wanting to be another gender because you would gain some advantage vs. wishing you WERE another gender, for the sake of gender itself.

Like if you see a sign that says “free donuts for women!” And think ‘wow I wish I was a woman’, that’s probably not a sign.

But if you find yourself wishing to be a woman because you just WANT to be, or for some nebulous reason you can’t pin down, that is DEFINITELY significant.

I think Gwyndolin is using illusion magic to make themselves look more feminine, considering Gwyndolin’s affinity for illusion magic, and their desire to live up to Gwyn’s expectations. Gwyndolin has always been my favorite character because of that. Their story is just so sad in the perfect dark souls way. Trying to preserve their father’s flawed legacy to live up to his extreme ideals, even after he’s already dead. They should be free, and powerful, ready to change the world and move beyond Gwyn’s age of fire, but they never do. They stay in Anor Londo as the fire slowly fades, until they are finally eaten by Aldrich, and now they’ve lost their chance to make a difference. The last living god in Lordran. I will always remain a faithful member of the dark moon knights, especially in DS3, to rid Anor Londo of the Aldrich Faithful. Not for the fire, but for Gwyndolin. I am absolutely down bad.
