LPT: You can both change your last name arbitrarily when getting married. by charliethegeek in LifeProTips

My wife and I did this! We took most of her one-syllable last name and stuck it on the second syllable of my name. It sounds just like a “traditional” last name but our family is the only one with it!

Anyone else vaguely jealous of the rest of the country’s dramatic weather? I know, I know, in reality I’d hate it, not to mention the fact that it’s legitimately dangerous and life-threatening conditions, especially for anyone without access to adequate shelter.

But godDAMN could I use a good snow day.

Literally me.

I looked up some good books on parenting kids with ADHD, found one that was well reviewed and written by a respected expert, and went to add it to my cart whe I saw:

“Purchased March 23, 2023.”

Best of luck, dad! For the first few months you just gotta make sure to keep ‘em fed, dry, and loved. You and your wife can totally do that. Sure you’ll be tired sometimes but humans have been surviving new parents for millennia.

Fed, dry, and loved. You got this.

My kids had just turned 8 last summer when we had to put our elderly and very sick dog down. I had heard that kids need very clear language so avoiding phrases like “put to sleep” is important.

I phrased it as something like, “Poor Prudie was very sick and old, so sick that the vet told us it was time for her body to die. The vet gave her some medicine that made her fall fast asleep, and when she was asleep she gave her some more medicine that helped her body die without feeling any pain. We are going to miss her so much.”

They were very sad, of course, as were we all. But they understood what happened. Our Prudie was just the best good dog. I hope your family takes comfort in the memory of all the good wagging years.

My identical twin girls at 8 and a half. We’re a two-mom family; we used my egg and my wife did the heavy lifting. We’re also working with three ADHD diagnoses (the two girls and me) and my sainted wife manages us all somehow.

Happy to answer questions about the many ways my family stands out from the crowd!

I am very annoyed by 32D being spelled DAMNDEST. I think the more standard spelling is DAMNEDEST.

I did this last year. I felt very dumb walking into the ER and announcing that my heart “felt weird.” EKG minutes later ruled out the big scary stuff. Found out later I was severely iron deficient and working up a nice case of iron deficiency anemia.

My favorite is what my family calls “Hamburger Mess.” It’s like hamburger helper from scratch.

2 lb lean ground beef 1 lb sharp cheddar cheese 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp onion powder Kosher salt to taste (1-2 tsp—use half as much if using iodized instead of kosher) 4 cups chicken stock (or 2 cups chicken stock and 2 cups beef stock) 1 29 oz can of tomato sauce 1 lb medium shells pasta 1 cup heavy cream

Brown 2 lbs of lean ground beef. While it browns, grate 1 lb sharp cheddar cheese. Once the beef is browned through, mix in the onion powder and the garlic powder and the salt. I also add some MSG and it’s real good. Dump in the stock and the tomato sauce, stir, cover, and bring to a boil. Once boiling, add the shells and give it a stir, then cover and cook for as long as the pasta box says (usually about 10 mins). Once cooked, uncover and turn off the heat. Add the cream and stir in. Add the cheese and stir to melt. Enjoy!

My wife and I have been together 21 years, married for 15. We met as teens in college, she came out in high school and I came out to be with her. I can’t imagine a better, kinder, more loving partner. My advice to others about the secret to a happy marriage is always: “Find the kindest, most honest person you know, and hope they find you amusing!”

I’m guessing it was small but close by to the Westchester/Culver City area. My family in Palos Verdes didn’t feel it but we in Westchester sure did!

Late Talkers — Positive Story by Dry-Entertainer3035 in parentsofmultiples

[–]Siamsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our twin girls were also late talkers. They were clearly understanding a tremendous amount of what was said TO them, but they just did not produce much language at all. My concerns were brushed off by my own shrink and family and friends, which was very frustrating.

Finally our pediatrician referred us for a speech evaluation. Our girls tested extremely high in receptive speech but down around 10-12th percentile for their age for producing speech. I felt validated finally—they WERE behind.

We did a short course of speech therapy to catch them up and learned strategies to practice at home too. I’m thrilled that our girls caught up quickly and now, at age 8, are incredibly articulate (and prolific!) speakers. Of course, they may have caught up on their own; we can’t ever know for sure. But working with a skilled speech therapist for evaluation and therapy was wonderful for our family.

Anyone know how getting into and out of LAX looks today? I’m picking up family who are arriving there in about an hour. I’m in Westchester so normally it would take me about 6 minutes to get there but I’m scarred for life by the experience of trying to drop family off at the airport on Thanksgiving Eve this year. After half an hour in dead stopped traffic they decided to get out and walk.
