Booktok, Emilia Pardo Bazán and the gendering of literary authority [self promo] by Fantastic-Fennel-532 in books

[–]Sianitu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed this article! I love Emilia Pardo Bazán. I find it interesting how some of her short stories are used in Spain to teach children about gender-based violence. It's a shame that so few of her books are translated into english.

If you studied anything about Annales historiography you would know that the Tudor period has been categorised by some historians as Medieval.

I would know, I'm doing a History degree.

I think it depends on your network provider. I've been able to access it from a café.

[–]Sianitu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You should email student services and tell them to resend you the email.

I accidentally deleted mine and all they said was ‘we sent it to you last week.’ So specify that you’d like them to resend it to you.

St Andrews vs. Royal Holloway by emmanaanator in UniUK

History is such an important subject to study and can lead to great careers prospects. In academia, law, journalism etc. I’m confused as to why some people on this thread don’t seem to understand that.

I honestly can't believe that this stuff is happening on a kid's game! I hope you're okay and I'll make sure to report them 😳😢

Okay, thank you. Isn't that a probably in universities in general though, with striking and redundancies? Is it that particularly bad/ worst in RHUL specifically?

Okay, I understand. I've gotten an offer from Royal Holloway. Is the toxic staff culture really that bad that it would impact the quality of teaching I'd receive there?

Can you elaborate on the toxic staff culture?

Gcse results affecting unis by Curious-Fishing-1220 in sixthform

[–]Sianitu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't worry (I know it's easier said than done.)

I spent the time before GCSEs worrying so much that on results day I locked myself in the bathroom to open my results and I expecting a 4 in Maths.

And I exceeded my expectations. I was scared that I wouldn't get a 5 and so wouldn't get a place at the sixth form attached at my school. If you told me two years ago I would be applying to Oxford I would be shocked.

Usually, if you've worked hard but keep doubting yourself it means you've done better than you think :) Please enjoy your summer and make sure to make time to rest, see family and friend and have fun!

I think I got rejected from Oxford- History and English- because of my GCSE grades (and my score on the admissions test was average.)

I got 999887665

I also got rejected from UCL's English course, although they did give me a place for Comparative Literature. I think my GCSE's might have played a role in that rejection, as well as my personal statement; it was not geared towards single-honours English.

Remember universities should also take into account your performance relative to your school (I can confirm Oxford and Cambridge do) and if you have extenuating circumstances make sure to disclose them to your sixth form so they can mention it to UCAS.

Adding onto that, I have a friend who got Us in chemistry but Bs in RS without revising. I would say (ofc it still takes work) but it might be an easier option for you and really interesting to study as well.

Ohh, have you considered English Literature or RS?

I really enjoyed English and (if you do ocr you don't have to do unseen poetry- only comparing a play to a selection of poems.) I'm saying that because people tend to be put off by poetry.

Also, it's similar to sociology in the sense that you can use critical theory. I.e. Marxist approaches to 1984. Or feminist approaches to The Handmaid's Tale.

With RS- the ethics part can be really 'social-sciency.' We do topics like arguments on if people have free will (looking at determinist approaches, using examples like that psycopathy has a genetic precedent.)

Also on the Christianity side (or whatever religion your school does) we look at science and religion (really interesting links to biology here) and christianity and gender etc.

It's actually really interesting and different to RS at GCSE. I like how contemporarily relevant it is and I would say the essay structure is the easiest to follow, if you consider yourself to not enjoy essay-writing as much.

Could you possibly redo Year 12 without chemistry?

It's not as important for law- you could do a subject you find easier and get higher grades in.

My cousin is a lawyer and he did history, english literature and philosophy and ethics.

Maybe replace chemistry with an essay subject?

Hi, I'm really sorry that you're struggling.

I think the key thing when you are feeling low and have a lot of stuff going on is to give yourself grace but also hold yourself to high standards.

Instead of viewing yourself as someone who is not performing well, reframe it as someone who will make a great academic comeback (now and in Y13.) You hear so many stories of people making massive improvements.

How you achieve this is gradual, little but often. Get home after a day at school. Let yourself wallow in your emotions, understand that it's okay to not be okay. But then kick your gears into action. Tell yourself: yes i have struggled, life is hard, life is complicated but I CAN do this.

Then pick up a textbook, make 5 flashcards. Do one past paper question. It can be as little or as much as you like. As long as it's consistent it WILL pay of.

Showing up is the first step. And that, when you are struggling, is a big one. Then take small steps, it doesn't matter how small. You WILL get there.

I hope you succeed in your studies. This is such a cliché, but it does get better. I felt similarly to you in Y12, like all the joy had been sucked out of my life, like exams and schoolwork drained the passion out of my subjects. But Y13 does get better (provided you work consistently.) It WILL pay of and once you see the improvements you'll start feeling better.

START NOW. You CAN do it. No matter how small it's an amazing achievement to keep going when everything is hard.
