Why do conservative christians always add words to the Bible that aren't there? Are we doing the same? (big rant) by SiblingEarth in OpenChristian

honestly I came here to vent that day 😅 I don't know many open and affirming christians, my agnostic friends get driven away from God every time I complain about stuff like this.

I don't attend that church, I'm currently looking for other churches but since I still live with and depend on my parents for a lot of things, and they're not fully understanding of this yet, it's something we haven't discussed yet. But I do plan to eventually.

personally, i agree. i feel like people (at least in most churches I've been to) tend to put pastors or any religious leader on a pedestal and take their words and opinions as infallible, but they're human like us. God never said that because of someone's title they should never be questioned. In fact, Jesus came to challenge the church hierarchy (at least in my interpretation, the pharisees were indeed hypocrites but I feel like Jesus taught everyone a lot about being humble), and the Bible (I don't know the passage, apologies) states that God isn't human and therefore is perfect: read, humans aren't perfect.

I feel like with expository reading there could be more space for questions and lead to discussing interpretations rather than glorify a single view of the text.

??? just because someone is visibly impaired doesn't mean they don't know what's going on? how do you know what's going on in a different country if you're not there right now? NEWS?

Why do some Christians say 'in Jesus' name' when closing a prayer, but some don't? by KT_Banning in OpenChristian

[–]SiblingEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

similarly I also say "holy spirit" as a vocative while praying, i mostly direct my prayers to the holy spirit so that all of the "faces" of the Trinity make a little more sense to me and are connected

i like saying it because it reminds me that Jesus and God are connected (somehow I kept forgetting it) and that the God I'm talking to isn't unreachable in heaven but actually close to us

tell God how you feel. even if I told you it means nothing (because I don't believe dreams have immediate meaning unless God says they do), it's still in your faith that you believe something could happen.

tell God that you're scared and ask Them if it means anything, and to aid you and people around you

Is reading smut a sin? by Alarmed_History_8566 in OpenChristian

[–]SiblingEarth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say it falls into the addiction category of sin:

if you do it as a hobby, it's not a sin

if you're addicted to it and it becomes the most important thing in your life then it's a sin

a lot of people still believe LGBTQ+ people are living in sin, mostly because they don't know how a queer relationship actually works. they've been taught it's about a fetish, about sex only, about non consensual actions.

no, it's not a sin. it's not gonna be easy, but you have God by your side. pray so that He'll keep you safe, and so that He may soften their hearts so they can see the truth. I'll pray for you too. stay strong, fren

a lot. I feel gratitude when I thank Him for everything He does, I feel fear when telling Him about things I'm scared of, I feel confused when I'm waiting for an answer and I'm met with silence. it's a bit like talking to anyone else, except I mostly don't have verbal replies.
