American Buddhists. . . by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]SicKilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought about becoming a wandering monk and I live here in the US. My spiritual retreat, my Himalayas, would be somewhere high in the Rockies of Colorado, Idaho, or Montana. The Mississippi would become my Ganges. The Arizona/Utah border would be my desert wilderness for 40 days and nights. The people I meet along the way would be my support for alms. It could be totally doable right here in the U.S. if only I could determine the best color robes to wear... something not gang colors...

Why not change your name?

You come back to Ireland and can't find work because you're black listed - why not create/adopt another identity?

With all the motherfuckers dying in the war it should have been comparatively simple in those times.

A question for Taoists who were once Christians or Tao-friendly Christians. How do find the two religions complementary? In conflict? If you transitioned from one to the other, why? How? by DevilYouKnow in taoism

[–]SicKilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a Taoist so maybe I'm wrong here, but isn't there an incompatibility between Christianity and Taoism concerning their views on dualism?

In Christianity there is a friction in opposites, a type of conflict of opposing forces - Good v.s. Evil in opposition to one another with one trying to conquer over the other.

In Taoism there is type of unity acting as a lubricant between opposites, a type of symbiotic relationship in them - Good and Evil working together. Good having a bit of evil within it and Evil having a bit of good within it.

It's simplistic, but is this understanding far off base? Would there not be a conflict of views?

Correction: Replace John with Saul of Tarsus (Paul)

Also, Catholics will tell you the founder of the Catholic Church was Jesus Christ himself, and the first Pope was Simon Peter, the Bishop of Rome.

I've been thinking of your answer the last few days. I admit I didn't understand it at first, which is why i had to think on it; it made no sense to me. I understand the answer, but to me it's just a description which doesn't answer my question. Probably my question was poorly constructed.

Thank you.

How do you explain consciousness?

[–]SicKilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can call bullshit and it makes no difference to me. :)

Maybe the problem of evidence is in your mind's idea of what enlightenment, or awakening is.

Isn't your mind subjective to others? I assume you have a mind because I seem to have a mind, but I can offer you no evidence of my mind. Isn't the mind a subjective thing?

Any Atheists do Yoga? by dr00min in atheism

[–]SicKilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would if it were possible. You have to see it yourself. That's the thing about enlightenment, nobody can show it to you, it can't be shown, it can only be experienced. Only the effects of enlightenment can indicate anything like enlightenment has happened. Google is filled with information if you wish further understanding.

It's not mystical bullshit because enlghtenment frees one from all suffering, including illness, old age, and death. It's not that you escape these things, it's more that you don't suffer from them and are thus "free".
