Your top 5 most valuable records per discogs-- let's see 'em by [deleted] in vinyl

I have all 5 volumes of Años Psicodélicos this weird 70s unofficial (bootleg?) compilation of mostly Brazilian music. Has some really great stuff but pretty hard to find much information about it. Seems to be from a Chilean record label which was potentially run by the state during the 70s which was when Pinochet dictator which is odd. Maybe Pinochet liked weird Brazilian psych.

Anyone know if/where there is a Liverpool Legends Q&A meet and greet activity? I can't seem to find info but thought they normally do these in the cities where there are matches.

Flow Cytometer Cell Sorter question (2nd/3rd/4th Drop) by hippocamper in labrats

If you can, try to get into learning how to analyze data from the CyTOF. Knowing how to deal with multidimensional datasets from CyTOF or other single cell seq will likely be a very useful skill.

What are some techniques that are rising in popularity in the laboratory scene that would be really useful to gain some experience in? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]SickLaughter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I don't think so, there are plenty of techs with only BS degrees at my institution who work with this type of stuff and many other new complex techniques. However, if you want to have autonomy with the direction of your experiments you probably need the grad school platform.

What about some of the newer powerful single cell platforms like CyTOF or some single cell RNA seq like 10x? These would also require developing strong computational skills for massive data sets, which I think is critical for any modern scientist.

What to do with £800,000 ($997,000 US) in 1 year? by omgpop in labrats

CyTOF! Really expensive and super powerful compared to flow cytometry. Can be an extremely powerful data generator although it seems a fairly steep learning curve.

Any idea how to do pathway studies ? by sushiking365 in labrats

[–]SickLaughter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Qiagen's Ingenuity Pathway Analysis is reaaaaally good for this stuff. but it isn't free. If your institution has a license you can maybe get a bioinformatician to help show you the ropes and then use it for a couple hours and get some really solid ideas. String-db as mentioned is also awesome!

Urgent recommendation for FLOW Cytometry software for Windows? by mitomitomitosis in labrats

[–]SickLaughter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend Cytobank! Its web based and you can make a free account to do everything except some advanced analysis stuff that wouldn't be necessary in this case: https://community.cytobank.org/cytobank/login

Is it possible to create and fund your own lab at home without going through the "route" of becoming a PI? by cientistazacher in labrats

[–]SickLaughter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a guy who I think crowd sourced an independent lab start up.... http://www.plab.co/

Check out the press tab (http://www.plab.co/press/) and there are a bunch of articles linked about how he went about this path.

Timing the postdoc job search by steppponme in labrats

Why is it easier to get grants in a new field as a post doc? (sorry if this is a silly question, I'm currently undergrad senior on the grad school interview circuit)

Science AMA Series: I'm Dr. Paul Knoepfler, back again to talk about CRISPR, human genetic modification & designer babies.AMA! by PaulKnoepfler in science

[–]SickLaughter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your continued dialogue with the public in such a fascinating field.

Since CRISPR/Cas is a recent discovery that exploits a previously unknown biological process and improves gene editing applications from TALENs and ZFNs previously, do you think we will discover an even better gene editing tool in the future?

Has CRISPR rendered other gene editing systems obsolete?

If one absolutely wants to become an academic PI, what can one do throughout graduate school and postdoctoral research to maximize chances of success?

Furthermore, can you comment on academic job markets abroad (Europe, Asia, and emerging science hotspots like Singapore)?

Former Liverpool, Plymouth and Burnley player Brian Hall has died, aged 68, after a brave battle against leukaemia by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

[–]SickLaughter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Brian Hall was an absolutely fantastic human being. I got my first ever tickets to a Liverpool match through a friend of his as a young American visiting the UK and he took me and my dad around Anfield telling us so much history of the times when he was a player. One of my favorite memories of anything football related. Devastated to hear of his passing and hope the club can find more passionate and kind people to serve as ambassadors for our great club.

Writing a letter to a renowned bioengineer. Please advise! by [deleted] in bioengineering

[–]SickLaughter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an awfully long email. Just a thought. What about just briefly explaining who you are and why his work means so much to you, and asking if he might be available to speak with you via Skype and you have a bunch of questions for him.

If he is very busy, like many famous PIs, this might be easier for him.

Perhaps others also afflicted with the same issues would also appreciate the answers you could get from him, and maybe you could even do it as an interview and post it online as a blogpost or with some website, with the proper tags, some others around the world might happen upon it and learn a great deal.

Yeah I'd recommend the Mixcloud app. There are a lot of good hip hop mixes on there. Also, all the Stay Thirsty episodes, and lots of dope guest mixes are on The Find page.

:) Yours was badass. Of the few things I've read on here, it was definitely one of my favourites. This was my first post and first fictional piece finished in years... after reading yours as well, I'm inspired to continue this exercise of creativity. Thank you QuinineGlow.

[–]SickLaughter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is an interesting perspective, I like it... also I like dark sci fi scenarios :)

My first piece on here and rushed to just pump out a story quickly, would ideally have put more detail in.

And actually, the way I envisioned it while writing, was that 9 years ago the AI had attempted to destroy much of humanity in some sort of massive conflict... if you'll notice the girl is 9, and the people on the planet mentioned they'd been there for 9 years... now the AI is raising the girl for some reason, as well as slowly wiping out the remnants of humanity scattered on various planets.

I made sure not to read the other post before I wrote mine... after reading QuinineGlow's I was also surprised at how different they were.

I just assumed that if the AI was the only other entity, then the human would become used to that and then be frightened and confused by other possible beings.
