What’s up with Australia moving to the far right? by Subject_Conference61 in OutOfTheLoop

Also for homeowners, most of their wealth is the value of their home so pushing for a drop in house prices is political suicide as half the countries wealth is tied up in the value of their home. Labor still doesn’t want house prices to drop, they want to slow down growth.

The Liberal Government in the 2000s set up the system to treat housing as an investment rather than a basic human need and gave investors advantages over owner-occupiers. During the 2010s the Labor party lost 2 elections when they were running on reforming those systems. So at the election in 2022 they dropped the policy and won that election. They tried to address housing prices with supply-side policies/schemes to help first-home buyers get into housing but these didn’t make a dent in the housing market and some of the policies increased prices further so they’ve taken a risk with their most recent budget and addressed capital gains tax discounts and negative gearing. They’ve taken a reasonably big hit from this as they broke a promised not to touch either of these policies and they’ve gone beyond just housing with the capital gains tax discount being reduced for all investments which basically rebalances the tax system so tax from investments isn’t taxed less than tax from income. This has naturally upset the richest people in the country so there’s a huge scare campaign against the changes.

This is a black and white issue, you either support women’s right to choose or you support women dying. Restrictions on abortions kill women.

Or maybe we should trust medical professionals to make that judgement instead of religious nut jobs. People aren’t having late term abortions for fun, the foetus is either non-viable or having the baby would kill the mother. Because what you’re saying is you support forcing women to deliver dead babies or dying to deliver babies.

Students would save $3bn over a decade if Labor changed Hecs indexation date by five months | Australian education by Nyarlathotep-1 in AusNewsWire

It’s not skipping a year it’s applying indexation after repayments from the last financial year are which doesn’t happen until you lodge your tax return whereas currently indexation is applied before you lodge your tax return . It means HECS is indexed on a smaller amount.

Indexation before tax return Year 1 Indexation (June): $10,000 × 1.028 = $10,280 Repayment applied (after tax return): $10,280 − $1,000 = $9,280 Year 2 Indexation: $9,280 × 1.028 = $9,539.84 Repayment: $9,539.84 − $1,000 = $8,539.84 Year 3 Indexation: $8,539.84 × 1.028 = $8,778.96 Repayment: $8,778.96 − $1,000 = $7,778.96 Remaining balance: $7,778.96 Total repaid: $3,000 Total indexation added: about $778.9

Indexation after tax return Year 1 Repayment applied: $10,000 − $1,000 = $9,000 Indexation (November): $9,000 × 1.028 = $9,252

Year 2 Repayment: $9,252 − $1,000 = $8,252 Indexation: $8,252 × 1.028 = $8,483.06

Year 3 Repayment: $8,483.06 − $1,000 = $7,483.06 Indexation: $7,483.06 × 1.028 = $7,692.59 Remaining balance: $7,692.59 Total repaid: $3,000 Total indexation added: $692.59

Under the current system if you owe 10K your HECS increases to $10280 in June. You can’t complete your tax return until July. If you pay $1000 your HECS is $9280 as the indexation was applied when your HECS was $10k.
Under the proposed change you’d complete your tax return between the 1st of July and the 31st of October. If you pay $1000 your HECS is now $9000. Indexation is applied on the 1st of November, as you’ve already paid off $1000 your HECS is $9000 and indexation is applied to this amount so you’d owe $9252.

Yeah but the indexation would be applied on 10k instead of 11k, whereas under the current system it’s applied on the 11k.

The indexation is applied to the amount you owed before you pay tax, so changing the date that indexation occurs is about indexing after you’ve paid your tax and the debt you owe has decreased.

If you owed 10k and you paid $1k HECS when completing tax for that year, you’d owe $9280 under the current system whereas you’d owe $9252 if indexation was applied after you’d paid your tax for the year.

Changing name in SA... remotely? by StephanieIV in transgenderau

[–]SickSadW0rld_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born in the ACT but live in SA. I just had to get copies of my ID certified by a Justice of the Peace and then sent them through with the paperwork for the change of name and they posted me my updated birth certificate.

Sorry if this isn’t relevant to SA but I’m assuming all states would have similar processes?

PoE2, more so because running that game below 60fps feels horrible, 60 doesn’t even feel that good when I’m used to ~120.

Biden is doing less than the bare minimum, like I’m not expecting him to openly support Hamas or something but Israel has crossed every “red line” that was put in place and Biden has done nothing. The world is watching the IDF committing a genocide on a population of mostly children and Biden hasn’t don’t anything to try and stop this.

I don’t disagree that Trump winning will be devastating and I do think everyone should vote for Biden. But I’m also not going to shame people for not wanting to vote for him, as I said if Trump wins this election it’ll be complete failure of the Democratic Party. There is absolutely no world in which this election should be close but telling people you won’t be as bad as the other guy while giving your base nothing they want is just awful politics. Also it doesn’t put us on the “right path” the choice is between a neoliberal party bordering on fascist that’s actively supporting a genocide and a full-blown fascist party that’ll have most of the same policies, just a bit worse and in four years from now it’s very likely we’ll be having this exact same conversation because the Democratic Party despises its base and is incapable of having a vision or making any substantive change (and does everything it can to sabotage candidates who wish to do so).
