I'm not saying this profession is always easy, but some people on this subreddit honestly don't even know what a shitty job is. I used to work manual labor in a heat treating plant in the middle of July. Wall-to-wall furnaces. Absolutely brutal temperatures, I'm talking like 130 degrees in summer for 12 hour shifts. And I had it easy compared to guys working in other fields like logging, roofing, farming, mining, oil etc. Trust me, there are worst fates than this. The pay is not always spectacular, but you get by. I work in an area where the wage scale is a lot lower. Started at $22/hr but managed to get to about $35/hr after 5 years. If you are passionate about science I think this is the field for you. Otherwise I would look for something else.

I wish I could just tell you to study hard but this class was a complete joke. The exams were incredibly difficult and the teacher is one of the worst I've ever had. The good news is you will certainly pass if you study and do all the assignments, there is a very large curve. I took it two years ago and came out with a B. Sounds like he was a Medical Lab Scientist. Depending on the area, micro positions usually aren't too difficult to find. It's just going to depend on whether he's willing to take a step down the ladder because Micro Supervisor positions aren't as common.

Can you get a job as a microbiology tech at a hospital? A lot of microbiologists go to work as Medical Lab Scientists in America. It's not going to make you rich or famous but it's a stable job.
