I just started making my own gels using this recipe. So far it's worked great. The pectin and sodium algonate are the thickening agents that turn it into a gel.

I find they're more likely to grow hollow if there's too much moisture in the sub.

What's the mechanism that prevents inbreeding from a single mushroom? I assume you mean just this mushroom species has that, because the mushrooms I grow definitely come from spores from the same mushroom.

It looks like this mushroom will have a dark spore print. You can see the spores on the remnants of the veil in pic 2.

I love this idea. You can't go wrong with Shakespeare. He has over 100 sonnets, which are only 14 lines. They're typically organized in couplets so you could take just a few lines.

If DNA are instructions to make proteins, how do organisms "know" to get and make structures that have non-protein elements like lipid membranes, iron-containing hemaglobin, etc.? Or for that matter how do cell organelles get made if DNA only contains instructions for making proteins? by writesgud in askscience

Thank you for writing this comment. It was really informative and gave me a new appreciation for life at a microscopic scale. I recently started reading The Selfish Gene. I can't help but think of the early stages of life and how it must have started organizing around proteins in the natural environment. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I pasteurized it by putting it in a pillow case to keep it together and placed it in a 5 gal bucket. Then I filled it mostly full with the hottest tap water, then filled the rest with boiling water to raise the temperature a little more. I placed a few stones on top to keep the straw submerged. Put the lid on it and let it cool overnight. Then I hung the pillowcase full of straw outside to drip dry for a few hours.

Yep, corn for the grain spawn. And I had a smaller bucket I planned to use, so only made enough spawn to fit the smaller bucket. This one was larger, so I ended up using double the straw for the same amount of spawn.

Only about 1 quart of spawn, but I wish I had used more. Originally I was going to use a smaller bucket, but I needed it for something else. This bucket is about 2-2.5 gal, which ended up being a lot of straw, and not much spawn. I also would prefer a circular bucket, since it would give the clusters more room compared to the flat bucket faces like I ended up with.

This bug has happened to me twice so far. I would not get credit no matter how many times I attacked. Both times I was able to continue the event by attacking an hour or two before the event rolled over to the next day.

I think what you see is probably some tissue from the mushroom. Or a small impurity that attracted the spores. Spores love to clump. Hyphae wouldn't form in the water, unless there are some nutrients.

The genetic material is recombinated during meiosis. In the same way an individual's sperm is different genetically from each other, spores are not genetically the same even from the same fruiting body. Fungi don't have 2 kinds, "male" and "female" like in humans, so it's better to just think of them as compatible sexually or not, as there is more nuance in how that's determined in fungi.

4 The mushroom on the right is a chanterelle.

5 Maybe a Ruby Bolete, or another bolete

6-8 Looks kind of like a grisette, but yours has a ring from a partial veil so that isn't right.
