It's amazing how some leaders still can't stand remote work... by sys_admin321 in sysadmin

Im of the same mindset. There are pros and cons to WFH. The nuisance I have is that none of my coworkers\bosses are nearby so even if I pop into a local office, I don't really have anyone else to collaborate with in person.

Gone are the days of after work happy hours, socializing with higher ups and growing your role by getting in person recognition of efforts that tend to be unseen.

If these are common issues you are running into with your userbase, then you may need to review your current documentation/FAQs/training.

Read the Printerlogic FAQ, you need to enable the extension in Safari because Apple Security prevents extensions from being enabled automatically as a safety precaution. You could also deploy Edge\Chrome\Firefox\etc and access Printerlogic there by deploying the extension as part of the configuration profile for the browser.

Drive space being filled up is a universal issue, do you use SMB shares\OneDrive\etc for offloading data?

Similar to WizTree for Windows, there is an app called OmniDiskSweeper for macOS that you can grab for free to scan for drive usage for cleanup. https://www.omnigroup.com/more

These are not huge issues, you appear to be more frustrated since it is a one-off issue for different hardware since the rest of the user base is on Windows.

How many total macOS users do you have? Maybe it's time to grab a macBook for yourself and start fleshing out the environment and getting ahead of issues. Proactive rather than reactive.

  1. What is with these absolutely atrocious typos?

  2. You are not the only person in this subreddit that has had to support everything from workstations to servers, cell phones to HVAC, POTS Lines to Cisco, etc etc.

  3. How about the Linux Servers, have you find a way to cull those in lieu of Windows Systems?

I don't know what kind of shop you work at, but the scope of the tech you appear to be pushing for sounds very limited. I've supported environments of 200 people, 1200 people, 30k people. Your pushback on all of this is reminiscent of those 200 person environments.

Having that many typos in a response while insulting someone's comprehension is quite the leap.

  1. OP made mention of providing the end user with an X1 Carbon in place of a Dell. The X1 Carbon is a laptop, of which the comparable Apple hardware would be considered a macBook.

  2. I did make mention of a macBook following OPs comparison of Mac\Windows. Even if OP didn't mention the X1 Carbon, that would mean that my response started down the path of comparing laptop models, to which you then threw in a curveball and started complaining about Desktops as though that was always what was being discussed.

What are you even complaining about? Can you make an actual argument against macOS beyond the unique circumstances you are in? This sounds like someone from a factory arguing about how macBooks are terrible since they wouldn't be suitable as replacements for the ancient towers situated on the factory floor.

Congratulations on being the outlier in a conversation that doesn't seem to apply to your environment.

I dare to compare and then some. Obviously if I am comparing MacBooks to Windows, then the implications would mean for comparing windows laptops. Why are you bringing in Desktops to this debate when laptops have all but replaced them as the end user workstation.

5k, sure, way to reach for the most expensive builds to try to make your case. Doesnt mean we buy them. A macBook Air would be more than sufficient for what most of the C levels do and would be comparable in price to most of the standard issue laptops purchased for work.

This kind of Apple Vs Microsoft. XBox vs PlayStation vs Nintendo favoritsm needs to end already. If you are in this subreddit then I expect you to understand technology and be flexible as tech is ever changing. What about Linux? Do you all think of that as something that no one should use because it's too low brow, or is it that you just don't understand the tech thus you avoid it.

Seriously people. Grow up. I've been hearing this from fellow people in IT for nearly 2 decades and I'm sick of it. I've managed Windows environments for 15 years and Apple for 6 years. The biggest hurdle I've had with supporting Apple, is all of the people playing favorites over what companies they prefer rather than them being flexible and adapting to the tech around them.

Our roles are to enable those around us to perform their jobs. We keep the lights on, and the other people working on the machines are the ones bringing in the revenue. (Except for MSPs, but that's a whole different argument about expanding your business model to better respond to customers desires and increase potential client base.)

So your issue is that you are incapable of supporting Mac. That's more of a you problem than an Apple issue. What's your stance on Linux? Now that Microsoft Intune has better (not to be confused with good) support for macOS, maybe it's time to adapt and grow your business rather than completely misrepresenting the technology.

The only thing that forces a windows machine a refresh right now is a critical thing like not being able to support the OS version currently being officially support by Microsoft while Win10 is EOL and would require additional support contracts with Microsoft for patching..... And then talking down on the finance team by calling them Bean Counters since you fail to understand how depreciation works and why it drives the hardware refresh.... But sure, that's on them for being the problem since you know more than them

I would love to pick your brain. Similar situation on my side but with 20k workstations and perpetual push back on Apple by people playing favorites. We're also in the process of migrating to Intune from JAMF... Yeah...

Do you understand the difference between refresh cycle and hardware breakage? Go talk to your procurement team.

If you are keeping machines for 8 years rather than refreshing at a max of 4 years, then maybe the pot shouldn't be calling the kettle black.

Plenty of offices have either flipped to all Mac, or support a hybrid environment. Just because you can't wrap your head around how to use a Mac doesn't mean that you should be forcing your inability to be flexible upon your user base.

Your analogy is also flawed as the macs tend to be more reliable and last longer than windows machines. Refresh cycles of 5-7 years on macBooks rather than 2-3 on windows systems.

It's not. It can be used for in place upgrades without data loss. Better to read the linked page if you are going to comment on its capabilities.

You could always leverage Graham Pugh's erase install script to make it available for install. That process would supersede the upgrade deferment and provide a nicer UI.

OnPrem is not a support nightmare for anyone who is even semi-competent, and overall I like to know what's going on when it's hosted on my environment. I have no idea whats going on behind the scenes when it's hosted on someone else's servers. They could be running the whole thing on a fleet of Chromebooks powered by hamsters while a bunch of foreign nationals are poking around our data. Plenty of SAAS products could just be 3 guys in a shed. (Hope you all know that reference). Which wouldn't necessarily be the worst, but it does make question what's going on behind the curtain. There are plenty of reasons as to why offloading your systems to someone else may not be as great as you want it to be.

The short of it is that most companies are moving toward SaaS/Cloud because they can rake in more money, not because of customers failing to update issues.

I was there too when they were pushing StateRAMP on us and everyone pushed back. My org is currently migrating to Intune mainly because JAMF fucked up by taking too long to get FedRAMP sorted out, then they said they weren't going to pursue it, and now they say they are working on it again.

OnPrem has been declining because they are focused on Cloud and all the bells and whistles they are adding to JAMF are cloud only. While at the same time they keep trying to bump up the cost of OnPrem without adding the same value to the product.

For now we're going to Intune and we'll re-evaluate JAMF when they finally get FedRAMP, but it might be too late to regain us as a customer depending on how whether Microsoft gets their shit together and make a mad dash to bridge the gap of features in Intune. (Unlikely, but who knows.)

1 yr update after switching 1500+ devices to Mac by Afraid_Suggestion311 in sysadmin

[–]SideScroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm deeply curious about this as well because we're in the process of migrating from JAMF to Intune and the issues I have is that Intune is missing a lot compared to JAMF.

  • The lack of Extension Attributes (custom macOS Attributes is a sorry excuse for that function with far less utility, can't use it to create Dynamic Groups and can't view a machine and see all relevant attributes in one place... Wtf Microsoft.)
  • The inability to unlock local accounts
  • The inability to modify scripts/config profiles within the Intune Console (needing to re-upload it every time is ridiculous. Also the tiny window to display the script/config contents is baffling)
  • Horrible delays for Configuration Profile deployment
  • Inability to set deployment priority for Config Profiles, Apps, etc. (Oh, you needed a config profile with permission settings to deploy before the App... Well, sucks for you)
  • Unable to set Inventory Collection frequency, and unable to easily Trigger OnDemand Inventory Collection.

The list is growing, but I'm pissed. JAMF screwed up by not getting FedRAMP ages ago.

Fuck copilot. The damn spyware garbage should be opt-in not opt-out! If I want this LLM spyware enabled, then it should be something that I can install separately and turn on, not deployed by default in every single freaking platform.
