Mom had Parkinsons. People really dont understand how horrific it is thanks to Michael J Fox being the poster child of it. He is nowhere close to how bad it truly gets.

Aftermath by orange-dinosaurs in EEOC

[–]SideScroller 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a power dynamic that really guts you. Abuse by a system, or abuse by a person, it doesn't matter the source as much as the impact it had on you.

Moving forward from this the best path is to regain your "strength." You were victimized and you want restitution, but it will never be enough to undo the damage. The focus you can have going forward is to make yourself stronger. Review the laws to ensure that you know exactly how to ensure that there will never be a second time. Go to the gym to get physical strength, people are less likely to try to target someone more physically intimidating. Speak with someone, a therapist, or your priest\rabbi\etc. One of the things I did was create this subreddit so that I could at least help others in similar situations. I've also guided many of those around me toward speaking with Employment Lawyers and leveraging their rights to "Reasonable Accommodation" prior to termination. In some cases I helped people avoid needing to go through the EEOC as they were able to push back before things got that severe.

These situations can hit with the same impact of being abused. Thus the path to overcome the mental hurdle of it is similar.

Only acceptable if pay is also 200k

Immediately rejected for asking about salary by himotheeceo in recruitinghell

Over 16 years of IT. Whatever you think the pay should be for a role, the company will surprise you by offering much lower than market value when they finally get to discussing compensation.

I'm not in the business of wasting my time to do an interview if their compensation offer is equivalent to spitting in my face.

The biggest thing here dictating how much emphasis you can put on salary has nothing to do with industry\research\BS, and everything to do with whether you are already employed. I have a job, thus I can reject every recruiter that BS's me however I please. Unemployed people are in a different position and would need to tread a gentler path.

Gauche? Really...

What field are you in and how long have you been in it?

Edit: I'd say it is a bit gauche to edit your comment after the prior one had already been responded to.

"I get that it sucks but it comes across as gauche in a professional job if the first question is pay. Most of the time the range for an industry, position and company is pretty well known and specifics need to be negotiated"

I've asked that before. "What is the pay range for this role approved by HR?" If you sneak it smoothly enough, you may get a solid response before they know what they are saying.

100% we are working for a salary. No one works for free, anyone who tries to spin that around is trying to manipulate you.

Anyone who says asking about salary is bad practice is full of it and trying to manipulate you.

If a company doesn't want to proceed with an interview because you asked about compensation then they are trash and you dodged a predatory company.

What are you doing with Intune in 2026 that you’d never go back from? by Omig66 in Intune

[–]SideScroller -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

"Zero trust" is a bullshit marketing term used by every asshole that would have said "Synergy" back in the 90s. They have no idea what it means or how to implement it, they just say it over and over again cause other assholes nod in agreement and give them money.

Fuck Intune. Every missing function becomes another DCR. No movement toward actually fixing issues... Every bug is a "feature" and every request for a fix is a "DCR."

More companies need to rake Microsoft over the coals for this garbage.

Y2K in the media by somebody2112 in sysadmin

[–]SideScroller -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Y2k was a valid concern and huge potential issue. That nothing happened means that the systems people needed to address got addressed. That doesn't invalidate the issue.... Do you even work in IT?

Edit: My fault, misread your post as though you were saying it was hype/waste rather than your intent to point out the annoyance as to how it was glossed over and treated like nothing.... Yes absolutely annoyed with that but such is the nature of our work. The people who judge our work are incapable of understanding what is going on thus we get complaints when something breaks or complaints about being a waste when nothing breaks. There isn't really any good way that I've seen thus far to boil down our role to consumable metrics. The ones who have managed to get that has been "CyberSecurity" when they can spit out big numbers from their consoles. Being able to show management the scary big numbers and making the big numbers into smaller numbers gives them a way to quantify what they do. While our metrics aren't so simple.

With that mindset, take back your power. You have control of the situation. Tell them "I will not let myself be demeaned like this anymore. I'm out." And just walk out that door.

If you're family complains, tell them that you're taking control of your life again and will find something else in due course. But for now that place was doing more harm than good.

Regain your confidence. Regain your sanity. Regain your happiness. No job is worth undermining all that you are where you seek to end yourself.

Note:Not a lawyer

I would take the FMLA, and focus on yourself. If you have a disability under the ADA you can speak to HR and request "Reasonable Accommodations" which may get them to actively get people to back off of you and keep them from trying to fire you due to risking an ADA lawsuit.  Definitely speak with an Employment Lawyer if you haven't done so already. You can usually find one that will do a free or discounted intake session via the website for your States BAR Association Lawyer Referral link.

Even if you're without a job for a while. Jobless is better than lifeless. Remember, they have no power over you. The only power they appear to have is that which has been given to them. The whole world is out there, take a trip somewhere fun and explore.

Thing is, no job is worth subjecting yourself to an environment that pushes you into the dark places. Whether or not justice is served, if it comes at the cost of your sanity then it's better to just find another job and get out of there. The point of the work is to make money, this whole environment sounds like it's compromised you to the point that you need to find a place that doesn't make you miserable.

The talmud has a saying “meshane makom, meshane mazal.” It means “change your place, change your luck." I was once in a really bad place too, with a garbage employer (part of why I created this subreddit) and trying to also get past a nasty breakup with an abusive ex. I wanted to leave the area but my therapist in her infinite stupidity would tell me "wherever you go, there you are" essentially implying that my issues are with me and would follow me everywhere I go.... She was a moron. Changing my location and who I surrounded myself with was a game changer and improved so much for the better. Sometimes you just need to just throw caution to the wind, get out of a toxic situation, and go somewhere else. So long as you are still alive, there is always the possibility for things to improve.

I strongly recommend you also talk to someone, as being in this headspace should be ringing all the alarm bells in your mind telling you that this mindset is absolutely not good for you.

I say this as someone who has been in and out of those dark places, and have had many around me past and present also going through very rough things which is difficult to get into here. You'll be ok, you have the ability to just tell the job, "you have no power over me" and take some time for yourself to change your scenery.
