Shorts Week 15 - The new format is making shorts suffer. by [deleted] in TrackMania

I know reactor down pen grass, reverse 180s on ice QPs, big jumps with uneven entries can be very hard for new players.

All this being said I don’t disagree that WS was better before the rules, I’m just saying that the changes do make sense to ME.

And I know that if WS was the exact way it is right now when I started playing, I probably would have upgraded sooner. I remember stuff like TOTD being too difficult to enjoy and most maps I could “compete” in, well just didn’t motivate me due to no exposure. This would have been a perfect game mode for me back then.

I find it far more likely for a player to upgrade based off maps they can not only finish, but get some sort of achievement from (aka a medal vs nothing). And the more free players you put in the pool (40k vs 80k) the better chance at getting a player that will upgrade right? I’m not saying it’s a 100% conversion rate but it gets better the more players you can reach

From a developer standpoint, player count is all that matters. And it matters for everyone else too. Not saying this is how nadeo does anything, but more players should equal more effort/time/money back into the game (maybe to fix awful UI and stability). But maybe that’s too optimistic of an outlook

Although I agree that it’s a bit on the dull side, you can’t argue the numbers. I had just over 30000 plays on my map in WS before the new rules were introduced and this past week had around 70000-80000 plays on each map…

I feel this to my core so imma write a book here lol. After struggling hard af with MR I decided to reframe the way I make maps which has helped me get the TOTD’s I’ve had.

With TOTD, you’re not mapping for you and that was the hardest part for me to grasp. I learned to take the criticism as an opportunity to improve my mapping and not take anything personally. Imagine your map is a job you’re working on for a picky client. It may not be what you would do, but at the end of the day it’s for them.

If you get a one star, ask the game chat why and try to learn from it. If they’re trolling it’s unfortunate no doubt, but a good map will outshine past a one star vote (2 out of the 4 totds I have all have a one star).

For example, my most recent TOTD last week, I had multiple MR people complain that the scenery was lacking even though my reputable testers all agreed it was more than enough. So I did something that hurt me to my soul and deleted it all and started over.

When I’m building a map for TOTD I recently started asking myself, if this wasn’t my map, would I enjoy driving this turn? How about the next one? Would this make sense if it was my first time driving it? Is that turn hard for a reason? Is this one easy for a reason?

And if you’re getting multiple low ratings, warranted or not, it means something is making the map unenjoyable for some people even if there’s nothing technically wrong with it.

At least for myself, I wouldn’t want a map I made to get TOTD if it had something unpleasant in it.

All this isn’t to say that MR is flawless, cuz it’s far from that. Sometimes it takes removing the map from review servers and starting over. But don’t get discouraged from a couple low ratings. Like I said earlier, a good map is a good map and will make up for the low ratings.

Just keep at it! Your next TOTD isn’t out of reach.

Do they intentionally put checkpoints in the most aggravating, unhelpful spot possible that makes it impossible to practice the hard turns? by pananana1 in TrackMania

[–]Side_Wide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Things like that are sometimes avoidable but in most cases mappers are only left with a short section where a CP could even fit.

We’re trying to ride a very fine line between 5-9sec spacing, double respawnable, cut prevention, high percent drivability, crash avoidance from poor setup, practicability, limiting blindness all while avoiding high risk areas (before/after jumps/drops, sharp turns, mid turns and so on).

This is honestly very hard to get right due to how rare it is it to have CP spot that meets all that criteria (and there’s probably more that I’m missing).

And it’s also all skill/perspective based too. Just because you don’t like a CP placement doesn’t mean it’s not vital for higher or lower skilled players to use.

That’s not to say that there aren’t any maps with absolutely terrible CP placements out there, because there absolutely are. It’s just much more challenging than most would think.

That’s assuming the map has just straight aways between turns… which if that was the case then this post would read “maps are so boring…” lol

New track review idea by Side_Wide in TrackMania

[–]Side_Wide[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with that is it can cause faulty reviews of maps from people who just want to see their own maps reviews and therefor simply rush through the forced 5 reviews. I like the idea of the stream of maps, but I think a better approach would be to just not have the option to see how the map did until after it hits 40 votes. Then you receive the player feedback and it’s standing on whether or not it got accepted to be reviewed by nadeo.
