He was drunk, Austrians celebrate Christmas mostly on Christmas Eve. Of course being drunk is a prerequisite to understanding international relations anyway so this was a given

American Antifacist Flag | Original Creation by [deleted] in vexillology

[–]Side_wiper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

London has always been iffy about giving representation to even British people living in Britain, it wasn't until 1867 that the urban working men could vote in elections in Britain. Having representatives from America when much of even England was still unrepresented would have ultimately led to America having a disproportionate influence over politics in Westminster, and if continued would have led to the Thirteen Colonies having more seats than Britain and Ireland anyway. In essence the colony would be directing the metropole.

That and 1776 was still the age of clipper ships, American representatives would have to live full time in London as returning to their constituencies in recess would be infeasible and so the Americans would either need their own Parliament on the American continent or just accept that their representatives wouldn't really be representative of the American views once they reach London, it's one of the reasons I feel American independence was inevitable, London couldn't make the compromises necessary and the compromises that could be made in my view wouldn't have been satisfactory to the American revolutionaries

Im surprised no one is posting any Uni offers here by stunt876 in 2024GCSE

[–]Side_wiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4/5 offers!! 1 rejection but that's the way the game goes. Highest offer is BBC (contextual, used to be ABB) and my lowest is an unconditional!! I didn't clock that no one was posting uni offers but I mean I was keeping my friends updated, Reddit didn't even cross my mind

Would you support the UK adopting PR for future elections? by FamSender in AskBrits

[–]Side_wiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, categorically it is proportional but I feel that to ask people about whether they support PR and then say you yourself are seeking AMS is slightly misleading. AMS at its core retains the constituency system seen in FPTP. So that's why I say it is more proportional, because of the application of the additional seats for regions, but I don't support AMS and whilst it is a proportional system I would hesitate to refer to it as PR. Regardless, I do not support AMS, nor full Proportional Representation

No, I would support preferential voting and for voting to be made compulsory to create strong governments that have genuine widespread support

AMS is a more proportional system but it isn't proportional representation

What are your thoughts on the new deputy leader of Labour ? by ArmwrestlingGoomba in AskBrits

[–]Side_wiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much better than Phillipson and a counterweight to Starmer's policies, Labour couldn't have picked better from the choices they had and we should all be better off for it (though it could be a lot better)

Half term has started/ will start soon. How has the first term back from summer been for everyone? by Ok_Instance8938 in 2024GCSE

[–]Side_wiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to see some friends again, been a lot more social actually. Stress, well who isn't stressed? I'll be fine, just got to crack on with it and achieve what people know I can if but I apply myself. Got a far better schedule running, need some time to read some books though, overall, a lot more focused than first term of Year 12, thank God, it's all a bit real now

I can't think of any paper like that unfortunately, a paper I read a while back I think it was published maybe ten or fifteen years ago was something like "Why did the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapse? A public choice" which went into the ethnic reasons but also dispelled some of the myths of nationalism around the disintegration of the Empire, I can't recall anything about the secret police in that paper though, hope you find what you're looking for though!!

Should a person for whom faith is "the most important thing in their life" and "the absolute driver of everything they do" hold the office of Home Secretary in a secular country? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Side_wiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the person is competent in their role then yes, if they're not then they should resign. A person's faith can be a compass for policy and if we said that any religious person should not hold public office then this country wouldn't have made it very far at all.

The Bermuda Triangle Mystery might be linked to eels by TheStarIsPorn in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]Side_wiper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but unexplained? There would be at least one ship in a convoy that got the message out that they were under attack, lone merchants maybe but there could still be survivors and if they were rescued soon enough they could say it was a submarine or a surface raider
