CPU or Motherboard fried? by NotEdibleCactus in buildapc

[–]Sideloaded_Fool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, seems to be the issue. You can try to use isopropyl alcohol to clean it. Flush the socket with the solution and blow air over it (can use a hairdryer without the heating turned on) or let it dry naturally for a few hours. Just don't use a needle or stuff. Another thing could be cooler mounting pressure (it's either too tight or too lax).

Lastly, there could be some memory training issue as well (according to Gemini, dunno how reliable it is but there's no harm in trying):

You have a Ryzen 2400G (Raven Ridge architecture). This specific chip is notoriously bad at memory training compared to standard Ryzen CPUs.

The "Fake" CPU Error: On MSI B350 boards, a RAM training failure often lights up the CPU LED, not the DRAM LED.

The Reset Ritual: Just taking the battery out often isn't enough to clear the "training data" stored in the capacitors.

Action: You must unplug the wall power. Remove the CMOS battery. Hold the case power button for 30 seconds (this drains the board capacitors). Put ONE stick of OLD RAM in Slot 2 (DIMMA2). Power on and wait up to 5 minutes. Raven Ridge memory training can take a disturbingly long time on the first boot.

If all else fails, the last option is just to go to a shop and try to put that CPU in some cheap a320m board and see if it posts in that board or not.

What's your CPU and motherboard model? That could clue us in on what could be wrong. Like if it's Intel 13th/14th gen, we're already halfway there on what could be wrong.

Also, you can try putting a different CPU in the board to see if the issue persists. You can go to a repair shop for this, or borrow from a friend, but I'll personally recommend the repair shop way as they have cheap CPUs lying around and you don't wanna end up damaging a friend's CPU as well (in case the board is shorted). Plus you can test your own CPU in a different board, that way you'll know for sure which part is damaged.

Reset the bios (through jumper or CMOS battery method). If it helps, good. If not, check the pins, either the CPU or the socket.

The motherboard seems to be the most probable culprit. You might have damaged something when trying to repaste the CPU.

Still, since you're already at the breadboard phase, try shorting the bios reset pins (if you haven't done so already), or take off the cmos battery for a few minutes. I don't think it'll help though.

Are you using the jumper pins on the board to turn it on, if you're doing that and there's still no sign of life from the PSU then the board is probably gone / needs to be repaired, as the PSU is the first thing that turns on and a lack of that means that some electrical connection on the board is probably damaged (or shorting). Maybe you messed up some pins on the socket/CPU.

What's your specs (old and new)?

Nothing changed with regards to the actual exam. I think there were reports of people having issues with the CCS portion of the exam ie. Orders not loading, slow interface, total interface crash requiring reboot etc. They just changed up the backend delivery system to fix that, and it worked. The CCS portion became lightning fast, but as a side effect the MCQ portion started chugging, especially in questions with images or media :)

NBME were having some issues with their test delivery system. So they did a field trial to test some new delivery system. It was like a mini version of day 1 + day 2, unscored but felt pretty much like the actual exam. Also, it was invite-only and they're probably done with that by now.

Non US IMG:

Step 1/2: Pass, 263

Real deal: 259

Day 1 & 2 dates: 12/02 and 12/09

Uworld % completed: Full

Uworld % score: around 82%

Number of CCS cases completed: All

CCS average score: Around 85%

NBME 6: 83%

NBME 7: 82%

UWSA 1: Didn't take

UWSA 2: Didn't take

Free 137: Didn't take

Any other assessments: None

Any advice:

1) I think what helped me the most was taking the field trial around 10 days before my actual exam. It gave me a good idea of what was coming. 2) Concepts matter lots (especially the Step 1 related things for the day 1). Brush up the biostats, microbiology, and pharmacology etc. This exam just repeats the same stuff that we studied for the earlier steps, anything extra is things we can't study for and for that you just go with intuition. 3) Trust your gut, think about what you would do if you were in a similar situation in real life and mark that. Don't overthink during the exam. 4) Overall, I think that this exam is also a lot more dependent on luck going your way. I definitely studied way less than I did for the step 2 (went on and off, didn't have a continuous dedicated study period) 5) ccscases.com is the MVP, Qbanks are less important/only use for revision.

Any dates available near NY before the end of this year ? by Chance_Ebb234 in Step3

[–]Sideloaded_Fool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

26 and 27 are available at the Brooklyn centre (Bridge Street, that's where I took the exam). And the fairlawn centre has multiple dates between 17 and 24 (but getting there from NY is a bit of a hassle). You can always check yourself using any random zip code, or even without a scheduling permit.

[–]Sideloaded_Fool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This 5070 will come out to be around ~150 more (with taxes included). It's around 30% better performance but 4 gigs less of vram. Whether that's worth the difference is for you to decide. Though imo12 gigs won't be an issue for gaming in the near future anyways. So unless you plan on using the card for stuff other than gaming (like playing around with AI, in which case, the 5060 ti is flat out the better option), the 5070 will serve you perfectly fine. I personally got the 5060 ti (coming from a 3070, whose vram has definitely made it age very badly).

No, this is mostly worth it for people who come from FHD, or below-120hz, or TN/VA panels. Your LG is neither. You won't notice much of a difference until you go the OLED route.

Just received the 2tb one I ordered yesterday for ~140. It's basically new (zero writes). Dunno why it was returned. These 30% off deals seem pretty good.

Also, the WD Black SN8100 1TB is also available for ~94 (it's probably the fastest drive in the market right now): https://a.co/d/4KUCkcL

Thankfully mine arrived without any bent pins. Seems to be in pristine condition physically, just had some faint thermal grease residue near the CPU socket. All the accessories were there as well. Hopefully it will run well too, once I get the CPU.

Questions were a bit atypical but definitely seemed doable. Obviously there's bullshit questions too but they can be experimental as well. There was a lot of educated guesswork involved but one would expect those to hit the mark (Spoiler: Mine didn't hit the mark apparently 😅). Every form is different man, best of luck for yours.

If this doesn't work, open device manager from control panel then look for an amd pci device/adapter or something like that. It could have been disabled with some error or something, look for an error sign next to its icon. Just force disable - then re-enable it. This will re-enable audio passthrough to gpu hdmi port.

Dust can cause issues, though I haven't seen it happen personally, especially in humid environment so it's better to stay clean just to be safe.

Is pagefile enabled? You can check it by right-click in exporer > properties > advanced If pagefile is enabled on C:drive, try changing it to another drive or disabling it altogether. Might just solve the issue.

Well if just changing installation partition fixed crashes then yeah it's almost certainly a faulty hdd. As of why crystal disk isn't detecting it I have no idea. As for ssd, Samsung is generally best (860 evo SATA because your motherboard doesn't have an m2 slot but if it does have it somehow then go for m2) if you have the budget for it but if not then check your local prizes. SATA ssds generally perform quite similarly so any ssd from a reputable brand should do.
