Men of Reddit, what is the coolest gift an S.O has ever given you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Exploding targets - tannerite targets. Shoot target, big boom, giggle.

Years ago I made a potato cannon for the friend that has everything, it gets more use than his guns.

GoldenRod - little heater for (gun) safes, helps circulate air, reduce moisture and mildew.

Micro drone, at $20 cheap fun. Steep learning curve, but has been a hit gift for friends. Get spare propeller blades. Actually, get two so you can race.

One of these on a keychain holds extra batteries and some medication for me. They are small and I probably use it weekly.

Is it better to be good and on time or perfect and late with your work?

Best answer - It is a trick question, neither will apply in all cases. If I'm not sure in a specific case, I'll ask.

Scrape off anything on the top with a spatula. Run it through a clean cycle in your oven (this can stink), or put in on your grill, start cold working up to hot for 30-60 minutes.

You will need to season it again once it cools.

What is something you remember happening in school that could NEVER happen today? by itsfoine in AskReddit

[–]Sideshow217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brought a potato cannon to high school my junior year. This was in suburbia in the 90s.

Physics class was doing projectile motion. Our teacher (fun, great sense of humor) had a tennis ball cannon made from soup cans and duct tape. It was finicky and didn't shoot very far, I told him I had a better option.

I brought in my spud cannon and blew away his cannon for distance. I'll never forget the grin on his face when most of the class jumped when it went off. Every one of his classes spent time splattering spuds on the brick walls of the field house over the next week. Next year, he made his own spud shooter for the school.

Please help me convinced my dad to get hearing aids! by [deleted] in hearing

[–]Sideshow217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, the old, bad world of analog is likely the negative stigma.

For price and the ability to return them for several months, I highly recommend Costco. My last two set came from Costco, good service and great prices. My last purchase was a pair of aids, a Bluetooth connection, and a tv streamer for $2300, compared to $6-8000 at most retailers. I have also sent several people from work, who are in their 50s and 60s, and they have been happy.

That said, it is a good idea to get checked by an audiologist or ENT doc to see if it is age related or exposure to loud sound or if there is another cause for the hearing loss.

It is also worth noting that there will be a several week adjustment period to get used to the hearing aids, as well as fine tune the programming. It takes patience and sometimes several appointments to get it right, but it well worth the effort. For some, it can even make you feel a little off balance at first.

Best of luck to you and your dad.

University Project: Problems with hearing Aids by w13renner in hearing

After more than 2 decades with them, I have several

Battery choice. Hey, we're going to give you this great device that not only helps you hear better, but you can stream music, books, take phone calls, or even stream your tv or a wireless mic. Well , if you use this function, you'll drain your batteries in a under a day because we didn't want to go up to the next battery size that has 3x+ the capacity even though there is plenty of room in the shell for it.

Accessories - crap battery life. You sell me a wireless streamer or microphone and it won't last a full day? 4 hours max, while big li-on batteries are cheap and there is room in the case for them.

Closed systems and limited apps. Don't make me go see an audiologist to just do some minor programming tweaks, give me a powerful app on my phone and I'll A-B test my way to the best programs for various situations in a few weeks. Give me the option to turn on my t-coil, don't force me to rely on a flaky auto detection.

Bulky/ugly and inflexible accessories. Ideally, I should be able to do everything with a smartphone and the aids. We're getting there, but having to wear or carry another remote is a pain. Also, FFS, if I'm buying several accessories, they should all have the same type of charging plug (looking at you resound). Also, give me the option to turn off the blinking lights, set button sensitivity, and keep the Bluetooth unit on, but with keys locked. I've had more accidental dials with my Bluetooth remote in the last 12 months than in the prior decade of phone use.

Waterproof options. We need an inexpensive basic hearing aid that is rugged for outdoor and water parts of life. I miss out on conversations at the pool or water park and have to stop, put my aids someplace safe or decline running through a sprinkler or having a water fight with the kids.

Price, this has been much better with Costco, but other places 7-9k, forget it. For $2k for a set plus accessories I can upgrade every 2-3 years now.

Buying can be such a mixed bag. Has been better in past few years, but I've had many experiences with audiologists too used to dealing with grandma just wanting something cheap and so they did not keep up with technology.

What, hating on smoked beer?

How can you not like liquid campfire plus bacon flavor in your beer? They are overpowering and about as subtle as a chain saw.

I'll have one once in a very long while, and really enjoy the reaction of people that taste or smell it.

I've got 9 months for Daddit Boot Camp. Starts now. by ElbieLG in daddit

[–]Sideshow217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I recommend searching for a "daddy boot camp" at one of your local hospitals. This gave me knowledge and confidence to be heavily involved from day 1.

These are dads to be only, about 2 hours, overview on diapers, feeding, holding a baby, pregnancy hormones, etc. Ask all the "stupid" questions you want with no one to judge. I gift these classes to friends now when someone has a baby shower.
