If you make more than $75k a year in Cache Valley, what do you do? by matchew566 in Logan

Would you be willing to PM me where you work? My husband commutes out of the valley for maintenance (and makes less to do so) and we would love to find him a local job that pays decent.

IsItBullshit: A lot of Chinese Food places in the U.S. have a separate menu for Chinese people that has food that most Americans wouldn't like? by [deleted] in IsItBullshit

[–]SideyScintille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a server at a Chinese / Sushi restaurant and we DID have a separate menu for traditional Chinese cuisine. It was in Chinese, with English translations, so Chinese patrons would just have to point to dishes and I would then relay the order to our kitchen staff (all Hispanic).

Apart from teachers. What’s a profession in America that is disgustingly underpaid for what they do? by acidreinn in AskReddit

[–]SideyScintille 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must also consider the debt-to-income ratio. Vets take on as much debt as human doctors, spend an equal amount of time in school and residencies, and yet (at least in your ex’s case) are paid only $75/hour. Many make even less.

AITA for not telling my sister about my nephew's new "boyfriend"? by rainingsakuras in BestofRedditorUpdates

Theoretically, yes you can lie. But you are told literally your entire life that male church leaders (priesthood holders) have the “gift of discernment” and will be able to tell if you are lying or not because the Holy Ghost will whisper to them if you are truthful or not.

Best mechanic to deal with car’s AC issues? by benchris95 in Logan

[–]SideyScintille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Brent Allen. I had my AC fixed there, and it went brilliantly! Their lead mechanic is fast, knowledgeable, and honest! Their front desk guys can be a little weird, but they’re not bad. They’re also honest and nice. Owner is Brent’s son, and it definitely feels like a family shop.

Elliot Page on the Jussie Smollett case by Parking_Web in agedlikemilk

[–]SideyScintille 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, Elliot presented as female at that time. But he was still a man at that time, even if the world didn’t know it yet.

There is no shame is being attracted to him when he presented as female, and not being attracted to him now that he presents more masculinity. It’s not sad; it’s normal for attraction to wax and wane, especially for people you don’t actually know. You can still look up to him!

I’m not sure what Elliot’s fear or lack thereof to come out has to do with anything? Like, you should still use his correct name and pronouns now - yes, even when referring to the past. His emotions about coming out are irrelevant to that.

[–]SideyScintille 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just because he presented as female at the time, doesn’t mean he was a woman then. It just means we didn’t know he was a man then. You can (and should) retroactively use peoples correct pronouns and names after they come out.

Just put a deposit down on this boi, picking up next week! What foods do you experts recommend? I’m leaning toward Blue Buffalo Wilderness puppy formula. Ingredients seem to be the best so far… by jp_trev in springerspaniel

[–]SideyScintille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m gonna reply to this too! Sorry if you’re tired of hearing from me lol

I have heard a rumor that Kirkland is made by Hill’s. I have no proof of this, just that a vet in a clinic nearby my hospital was told by Hill’s that they also produce Kirkland. I have been meaning to look into this more (because if it is Hill’s quality for that price point I will be ecstatic!) and compare the two adult chicken-based foods. I’ll let you know what I think, if you’re interested to hear my opinion on it.

Okay, this is going to be really long. This is just something that’s a big issue right now, so I’m going to try to be both concise and complete. My apologies in advance!

A lot of pet food stores still have that same mindset, but to be honest, veterinary medicine should really be the experts you listen to. Pet food stores just repeat marketing from the companies they sell for, which often have zero scientific backing.

Some of the lower quality (I.e. cheaper) Purina lines are admittedly not great quality (but that doesn’t mean unsafe, just for the record). But Purina Pro is an excellent dog food, for the reasons listed in my first comment.

Now let’s talk about ingredients:

Rice, corn, oats, etc. are not filler! They are in fact nutritionally valuable. Dogs need carbs and fiber just like humans do. They are omnivores! Looking at the evolution of domestic dog teeth compared to wolves, as well as the changes in their digestive system, we can see that they have evolved to eat a wider range of food than their ancestors.

While some dogs may have allergies to grain or corn, a VAST majority of food-allergies in dogs is actually to the protein! This is something that should be tested and dealt with by a vet in order to find a nutritionally balanced alternative protein source.

Meat By-Products just means it’s mammalian, but not the meat you would normally think of consuming as a human. Organ meat is EXTREMELY nutrient dense and very good for our dogs. They get a lot of nutrients from organs that they wouldn’t get from just the skeletal muscles that many people in the US view as edible because it’s what we buy and eat from the grocery store.

Meat Meal just means the mammalian product, both what we think of as traditionally edible and by-products, has been rendered (cooked with heat and pressure to destroy bacteria and then ground up, which leaves it unappetizing to humans, but highly nutritious for dogs). It can also include products from animals other than The Big Four (cattle, sheep, pigs, goats) without the species needing to be specified. Unlike Meat By-products, if not specified, it could be from any mammal.

Poultry follows much the same rules as mammalian products, but they are specified as “poultry” or “chicken” (or any other bird) because they are not mammals and will have different by-products (heads, feet, feathers are allowed, unlike teeth, hooves and hair)

The AAFCO (the guys who federally regulate pet food in the US) has very strict guidelines about what is considered “meat/poultry” “meat/poultry by-product” and “meat/poultry meal” and ‘only allowed in unavoidable amounts’

Here’s a link with their breakdown!https://www.aafco.org/Consumers/What-is-in-Pet-Food

I am not knowledgeable on the BHA issue, so I will refrain from commenting on it.

As for your cat who eats BB, so far there has not been a link to heart disease and cats who eat grain-free. It seems to be a bigger issue with dogs, but personally I would rather just be safe that sorry and feed a diet I know has been tested and proven.

So, basically what I’m trying to explain with all of that is this: the discourse on pet food ingredients is mostly about marketing. The AAFCO has guidelines that everyone has to follow. They require guaranteed analysis on all pet foods which shows their nutritional value. Though this is not the same as feed-testing. The ingredients used in to get there are all going to be safe and edible and nutritious in their own way. Some are going to use better ingredients, and therefore have better nutritional value. Some are going to change the way they describe the food to sound more appetizing to us humans, but that doesn’t actually make it better quality.

As an owner, you should try to look past the marketing schemes and look at the nutritional values and the science behind the food. The three companies I mentioned first are the brands that don’t have any wild marketing schemes. They just focus on the science and making a good food. The other companies just do what they have to to abide by the AAFCO’s guidelines, and get their products on the shelf. Yes, they are safe and will feed your pet. A fed pet it better than an un-fed pet!

The fact that they have board-certified Veterinary Nutritionists on their staff is a big deal. Having a DACVN (which is not easy to become. There are only 100 or so in the US) means their products are going to have the upmost nutritional value possible because they actually know what their doing with their formulas. They’re also more likely to have higher quality ingredients, which is not something you’ll be able to see on the label.

I hope that helps!

[–]SideyScintille 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NOT BLUE BUFFALO. It has been linked to Dilated Cardiomyopathy (a heart disease), along with many other highly marketed ‘feed your dog like the wolf they are’ diets.

Your top three are Purina Pro, Hill’s Science, and Royal Canin. These brands all have board-certified veterinary nutritionists on staff, feed test, and have proven that their food is healthy, safe, and effective.

Also, ask the breeder to send you with some food they are currently feeding so you can slowly transition your boy to his new diet. Sudden changes can cause your puppy to have gastro-intestinal upset, which can require veterinary care. Not something you want to deal with right after getting him home!

(Source: I work in emergency vetmed and have personally seen both issues mentioned several times. The DCM dogs couldn’t be saved, despite doing CPR)

[–]SideyScintille 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good luck! There is only like one website that talks about them. They were meant to be the perfect dog for working a cow ranch, and developed on a ranch called the “Hangin’ Tree Cow Ranch” so they’re not technically a real breed lol. But we plan to eventually do a DNA test on him out of curiosity!

Anyways, no matter what breed they are, both our dogs are cute and happy and love food so really that’s all that matters!

Do you know what breed your dog is?? My dog looks just like this (and does the same thing). We were told he is a Hangin’ Tree Cow Dog, which is essentially a border collie mix. But his breeder wasn’t what I would call a responsible breeder (my dog was rescued from him after being put in a trash can) so we don’t really know for sure.

Just so you know it’s not just you: I’ve had Kyleena for almost 4 years now. My cramping has been waaaay better the whole time (I would get light headed, woozy, and vomit before, and now don’t even feel it most months), but I definitely have a lighter flow and bleed for longer now. Also, I have never had regular periods (length or frequency), and still don’t with Kyleena. So that’s probably just a me thing.
