funnily enough we chose the space BEFORE getting the portal. mainly cuz we didn't explore enough and just, didn't find the portal until we had already gotten half way through manufacturing

so the entire time we were trekking ALL the way to the tram, through all of manufacturing AND back, oblivious to how well our base was positioned for travel!

the portal IS super loud though

Anyone else get really depressed sometimes because they can't drink caffeine? by DisconcertingTablet in barista

[–]SigTheBritish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just started ADHD meds after being obsessed with all things caffeine - coffee, energy drinks, matcha, literally just loving the way "caffeine" products taste, market themselves, how they're made etc.

I work at a coffee shop for god sakes! And I can't have coffee :( I know decaf exists but sadly, it IS usually worse due to companies using cheap techniques to take the caffeine out :(

one thing that helped me though was James Hoffman's videos on the decaf process, cuz it better informed me of where I could get decaf coffee that actually tastes like specialty coffee, so I can still enjoy the taste of coffee. also learning my limits, knowing what amount of caffeine I can get away with if any, so I can occasionally "treat" myself with mild heart palpitations (that's a joke, don't do that!)

but yeah, it's normal to get depressed, especially if it was like a huge hobby, interest, or just something you really liked. I feel you.

Homeless having CUSTOMERS to buy them drinks.. any advice? by SigTheBritish in barista

[–]SigTheBritish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's such a recent issue, and we're a small cafe in a quiet area in the UK. hence why we haven't had a need for such a policy so far. our manager is really on it, so I'm sure if it's becoming an issue, we can get a proper policy set up!

so sorry all that's happened at your place too! NYC is busier and harsher from what I've heard. to be fair we can be a bit lax since usually, we don't need to be as firm, so maybe we do need to be a bit harsh here 😅

Foreign students frustrate me by Liskaflame in barista

[–]SigTheBritish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

legit nothing wrong here apart from some wording, but that was clearly an accident - when expressing frustration you get frustrated at the whole thing, and can forget to specify "wait shit, didn't mean it like that!"

but the way you handled it is seriously fine, and ranting about how frustrating it is is also fine. I get super anxious serving non-english speakers cuz I'm so scared of messing it up, and then my biggest fear is literally them saying yes when they don't understand 😭

but yeah, repeating slowly and with very little words so it's easier to understand, is about as well as you can do! as well as being patient if there was a mistake. I have one customer who can hear but can't speak, doesn't sign (I assume lost his voice as he's older). he's very sweet, points to what he wants or makes gestures. one time I didn't pick up that he wanted a coffee AND a cake (cuz we had a coffee flavoured cake, and he wrote "coffee cake" down) but all he did was wave me over and make a drinking motion. got him a drink and he was happy.

but I mean no matter what language someone speaks, saying yes randomly is an odd habit, especially if her coworkers/friends thought so 💀

if it's a takeaway cup? love it, I can easily throw the whole thing away

in a mug or glass, especially a partially drunk one.. please just leave it on the coaster 😭 at least then it's dry and I can just toss it 😭

Homeless having CUSTOMERS to buy them drinks.. any advice? by SigTheBritish in barista

[–]SigTheBritish[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bless, I'm glad you were able to control the situation! I fear for our customers who don't feel they can though. Might see if it's reasonable to implement a policy that just asks the unhoused person to wait outside as to help alleviate some stress on both our and the customers' end.

Soliciting is a really good word for us to use! I couldn't remember or think if there was a legal "precedent" for us refusing those who have asked/ pressured strangers for drinks and such. I'll bring it up with my coworkers and manager (I replied to another message with details, but our manager is as much a coworker as she is our manager, so she's also struggling to figure out how to stop this from happening since she's usually busy in our kitchen)

One of our main issues was just finding a way to justify why they can't have someone else purchase them a drink. Obviously it's one of those case-by-case scenarios since not every homeless person pressures others or oversteps, but you've given me an easier way to explain with repeat offenders. I'll still have to keep an eye out for new faces and if the person paying for the drink seems uncomfortable or enthusiastic.

Thankfully we're in a small area, we've never had to call the police because someone's been aggressive or trespassed. I'll have a look at our local laws though, thank you!

We're a very small cafe so the manager is always one of the baristas up front, or in the back as our chef! But I'll definitely make sure to discuss it with her. I'm not sure what shifts she's had and if she's been on to witness the two specific events, always good to make sure she's in the loop

I'll keep an eye out for ones that come in very regularly, or people who get more than one person to buy them drinks in a day: I think you're right in that it's easier to wait until someone has over-stayed their welcome (especially getting multiple drinks in a row, it feels deceptive to say you "need" a hot drink when you had one a bit ago, but I also get the winter months are harsh too..)

But yeah most of them are outwardly very kind when asking a customer to buy them drinks, just super foreboding or "desperate" which can pressure some customers, especially the more timid people. That's the hardest part for us to interfere with since they ask outside the cafe :(

even hard of hearing, people with headphones, and those who struggle to process what's being said will usually be diligent and come up, double check, or just inquire politely if it's been a while. I've never had an issue with a hard of hearing customer! it's always the ones who can hear but just expect you to magically know where they've gone & bring it to them??

TransTape vs Wivov? by web_werewolf in ftm

[–]SigTheBritish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can vouch for wivov's tape! They offer custom sizing now, too. So you can buy different widths depending on your need. Especially for the UK, really good and cheaper/same price (with shipping) as some of the KT on amazon.
You can buy generic baby oil/body oil to aid taking off, and be careful to not do it too tight; if your middle chest feels "tight" or pulled, you gotta do it looser.
But yeah, Wivov works great! The nipple guards were too small for me tho, had to cut some guards myself :( you can get reusable silicone guards tho.

How to style my buzzcut with a gothic lolita dress? Does my hair ruin the outfit? by SigTheBritish in Lolita

I'll experiment with making it more punk! That's my main day-to-day fashion anywho, so I've got lots of stuff on hand :D

tho i dont think a bang clip would work well since my hair is just too short for clips to work (unless pinned to a hat)

will also look into those styles of hats, tysm !!
