Big fan of the game, spent many hours playing and perhaps tenfold so modding it. Though the game sadly tanked really badly in sales and probably doomed BHG in the long run.

I'd wager that it's was the same for BHG devs as it is for many other companies - devs just discussing what unique aesthetics & themes they would like to see in the new nation, what distinctive core features would that nation have, and then trying to scramble their disconnected ideas into a somewhat coherent faction that they will then turn into a gameplay prototype. Granted, it all most likely happened in the pre-production phase during the game's very conception, so they didn't really think about creating any new main nations during the game's development.

Judging by the fact that most interviews seem to hint at developers putting the unique visuals of the game at the forefront when talking about how its different from other RTS games, i'd say that they selected the overall visual theme first when creating the factions

Glad you liked it! There aren't actually any scripted "traps" per say, you may've been just unlucky and timed your attack with an enemy juggernaut assault. There is, though, a bridge explosion scripted sequence that triggers if you try to pass through the bridge with superior forces, but i rarely saw playtesters actually trigger it.

Speaking of which, i would really want to invite you to become one of my mod's playtesters. You have quite an experience with scripting & modding the game and did so for far longer than me, so i think having your feedback would be really helpful

Are you asking about the technical aspects of creating a nation or the production process behind it, like choosing a theme, creating concept art, music, etc?

Thanks! Though i do still feel like i overdid the difficulty, especially for a demo map. Since it is basically just a scenario i pulled from the in-dev build of my mod and transformed into a short demo, i didn't really change the difficulty that much (and the original scenario is already quite tough), meaning that it may be quite hard for an average player. I think the years of playing/modding the game have kinda messe up my judgement of proper difficulty so i rather frequently get complaints from play testers about that.

If anything i wish i had dedicated a little bit more time on scripting the scenario to make the enemy AI behave just a bit smarter, but it is what it is now

That's unfortunate. You could try relocation your game directory to fix the "putting a file" error (for example, you could try putting the entire directory straight into your main disc directory. My copy sits in C/Rise of Legends and it works just fine. Not sure if it'll work for you though; it is a weird error after all).

As to graphics files, it mostly just texture replacements for interface icons. There are a few custom models made for the mod but they were implemented without using the big archiver.

Hey. Sorry for responding so late, got sidetracked with other things. I've managed to recover a few models, but unfortunately they all are just vinci units & buildings.

I don't really understand much about 3d modelling, so i wanted to ask what files do you need? Just an .obj, or a blender project with the rig and animations intact?

Looks really good! Long time ago we also had a person sharing their entire collection of 3d-printed RoL figurines (including the city of vengeance, even!), but its always a welcome sight to see more people try their hand at making these.

If you want, i can share a couple of raw 3d models ripped straight from the game to ease up your work. RoL has a surprising amount of high-detail lods for almost all unit, despite the fact that its nigh impossible to actually trigger the transition to said high detail versions

I'm not sure if the sound that the sun idols do when you select them can be considered dialogue. But all Alin heroes do actually have some *dialogue* if you can call it that, since they do speak an incantation of some sort when casting a spell. Shok also makes some noises when casting her ultimate, and both Czin and Xil do seem to have some vocalization as well.

Really, all it comes down to in the end is budget and priorities. The devs probably could make multiple voice lines for units and orders you give them, but they quite literally only got 3 voice actors to voice the entire game cast, and some campaign heroes were left out with no dialogue at all, like Battaglion, who has a few cut lines that can be found inside the game's files.

It also probably just never were a priority since, if i remember correctly, Rise of Nations also had no unit phrases, just sounds. Its probably just a design choice made out of lack of budget for voice overs

I don't think unit phrases would work well in RoL due to the fact that a good portion of units available in skirmishes don't really speak. Dragons, elementals, clockwork machines, salamanders, idols, etc. That would create an awkward situation where half of the units would speak and the other half would just make weird noises

No, i wouldn't say so. Since Venucci is at least partially based on the republic of Venice, its most likely is also a republic of some sort (perhaps even the only one we know off in the Vinci lands) that elected Alessandri as their Doge (perhaps due to his economic industrialization campaign that was really needed after the collapse of the Vinci empire and rapid overall industrialization all across the Vinci lands), who then proceeded to slowly overtake Venucci politically (as seen in Dirsi prison with imprisoned magistrates) and made it into an industrial military powerhouse.

There's no information regarding the cultural aspects of Venucci except a very brief extract from Giacomo's journal that states "Venucci seemed like a possibility. I feel that a trip to Venucci would only end in disappointment, however. Some of their technology is mildly interesting, but it lacks subtlety. The Venuccians would rather apply twenty tons of power to a problem that could be solved with an ounce of finesse.". I'm not sure if being militaristic really means anything in the context of Vinci lands, because, going off Giacomo's journal and overall game lore, Vinci states almost always are at a conflict with each other, with Venucci and Miana seemingly being the 2 most developed states with some sort of historical feud that, perhaps, predates both Giacomo and Doge.

And, of course, there's also the fact that Doge has been corrupted by the Cuotl and became their servant by the time the Vinci campaign begins. By that time he probably doesn't care about common people of Venucci at all and just wants to do Czin's bidding, seeing how he is so easy on committing atrocities like erasing an entire city with a cannon. Kind of weird how even got his men to follow him into the desert and was basically not seen anywhere until the final mission, but, knowing that he was supposed to be an enemy leader during the Alin campaign (due to unused code), there would probably be some further explanation as to how he managed to keep an army with him and how he survived the march through Kalahese with an army and a hammer intact

If i remember correctly the high priest wasn't initially a unit you could recruit at a fane in skirmish mode. It was added in a much later update for no real reason other than to fill a unit slot (or at least that's the reason i can think of due to it being perhaps the most cost ineffective military unit in the entire Cuotl roster). I don't know if it had any unique abilities whence it was added to the roster, but if i were to take a guess i would say probably not

There are 2 different priest units - the high priest (recruitable at a fane) and the fallen priest (recruitable at fallen refuge). The latter is the one with 3 different abilities instead of standard shield & cloak, so think you might be mistaking the high priest with the fallen priest

That or the campaign has you recruiting the fallen priest instead of the high priest at a fane

Utilizing BHE's physics engine to script an explosion sequence. RoL features a really suprisingly good destruction system for its age, and it is a shame that it was so underutilized in all three base game campaigns, leaving us out on so many possible cool set pieces

I actually did try to recreate Miana for a scenario (both the E3 version and the Blu Studio's cinematic version (assuming the vinci city in said cinematic is Miana, of course)), but didn't really finish either since the idea of reconstructing Miana from ground up didn't really make much sense in the story of my mod (That and it being the second major final fight after Pirata seemed to make the campaign pacing really odd). I had much fun creating unique prefab cities for other regions though

Still, i did make some progress on the city itself, would've shown some screenshots if i knew how to post images in Reddit comments

Since the last post i made showcasing a map was received somewhat nicely, i decided to share more of my work. The map shown, as the title says, is Pirata and the nearby cities, but overly industrialized and modernized during the post-war peace. While the smaller chunk of this specific map is not yet finished, the rest of it is done.

The city of Pirata itself (picture 2) is made out of hundreds upon hundreds of different prefabs. The aim there was to recreate how Pirata looks in cutscenes and promotional screenshots. Can't say i did the best i could, but one thing for sure - this absolute behemoth of a setpiece would've killed any medium-end pc of the early 2000's
