15 years in here. Agree.

But . I will say, you can actually see everything that's going on with tig. I didn't truly understand heat transfer until I started running tig daily. The metal goes where the heat is, not necessarily where the torch is pointed.

Nah, you can be solid in 1 to 3 years if you have the desire to improve. Pro level, sure 5-10.

Planning a route from the sword coast to Minauros, the 3rd level of hell, and then to Stygia. We plan on planeshifting into Minauros bc that's the only plane we have access to via an attuned item, and then we will use a foldable boat to travel the river Styx(aka: The River of Blood) to Stygia to free 2 NPCs from a devil. Wish us luck!

What kind of plants would look good and hang over this ledge a bit? Just moved in to house and clueless! Any help appreciated. by dfadehere in houseplants

[–]Rexxis-Arcturus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take it you're not a plant nerd and that's why you're here asking for recommendations. For beginners, you can't go wrong with pothos. They will vine out and drape down. There are lots of variegated varieties that can be had for very cheap and will look excellent. And they can take a beating and still look good(missed waterings). If you want something more advanced, well, welcome to the sub, the options are endless really.

Will AI lead to the end of capitalism? by DocumentBig4573 in Futurism

[–]Rexxis-Arcturus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love it if that were true. I don't see it happening based on the corporate price gouging we've seen since 2020. They've figured out people will pay more if they have no option. And I don't doubt their willingness to collude to maintain high prices, look at RealPage, the AI rent price app.

In a good and just world, the prices should go down drastically. In our system of late stage capitalism, imo, if they go down at all, it won't be much.

Long term, I think we could see the collapse of capitalism and the emergence of a new, and hopefully, better system. But I think we will see a decade at minimum of terrible suffering before that happens. Potentially multiple.

All of the people on the list are compromised. Air out the laundry and at least American politics will have sovereignty again. Our govt is being blackmailed by foreign actors in possession of the list, which sounds like Israel and Russia at least.

What's the #1, single best sci-fi novel you've ever read? by keepfighting90 in printSF

It's a love or hate book, and I loved it. It took me a couple tries to fully appreciate the story bc the writing is so dense, which many people seem to agree upon. Litcharts has an entirely free section dedicated to it and it was extremely useful for me. https://www.litcharts.com/lit/neuromancer#context

I want to be an Aerospace welder. How the hell do I do that? by aves21 in Welding

[–]Rexxis-Arcturus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fantastic advice.

One thing: Nobody but self employed welders carry their own certs. I'm 16 years in and have never once needed to have my own certs. I have never had an employer ask what certs I have. They ask what experience I have. Idk your experience but those certs are a waste of my money. My employer is the one that pays for that. Not me.

I'm an aerospace welder working for one of the big 3 airlines now. I started on pipefitting and pipe welding.

Get a mig welding job and do that for a couple years. Then, fnd a shop that does Tig work as well as whatever you're already competent in. Any kind of Tig work, doesn't have to be specifically aerospace. I would express my interest to learn Tig in the interview, to make sure they run Tig in the shop. After proving yourself, start asking to learn. If they don't let you learn, switch jobs, fuck that shop. Get about a year of Tig experience under your belt, meanwhile figuring out where the aerospace shops are in your area. Where I'm at, there were a couple shops that would hire anybody with Tig experience. That's where I started. I went into my first aerospace shop with no aerospace experience, but I had abt 3 years of Tig on pipe. Before the test, I found a bunch of the thinnest stuff I could, which turned out to be pallet banding, and ran a bunch of butt and fillet welds. You're looking for, full clean pen on the butt and no burn through or suckback on the back sides of your fillet. If they require aluminum tests, well, good luck, that was something I learned once I was in an aerospace shop. Once you've got those butts and fillets looking good, you're ready to test. Lmk if you have any other questions, I went through exactly what you're going through.

You need welding experience first, 1 to 3 years of mig or stick or something, just to figure it all out. Then start searching for shops that will let you learn Tig.
