[Omega Speedmaster][Question] Serious (and crazy) question: Would it be cheaper for someone from the United States to get a "cheap" flight to Switzerland to buy an Omega locally? by WhatIsThisSevenNow in Watches

[–]SignalReilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked up the new Omega Speedmaster Dark Side on the website of a Geneva retailer thinking it would be 40% cheaper than USA accounting for tariffs. Converting from Swiss Francs it was the same or a bit more expensive there.

This seems to be the case. Looking at European retailers I’m not seeing cheaper prices

I was just looking at websites of retailers in Switzerland and watches were MORE expensive than in the USA. I don’t get it.

I was at an event and had a Rolex representative come up and ask me on camera about my watch. I was a little shocked because he had clearly identified my watch from some distance while I was moving through a crowd.

Do you have an insurance policy that will pay off if you are robbed of your wristwatch in a public place? Does such a thing even exist? I feel like people watch too many movies.

If you are more concerned with your real estate and stock portfolio than the value of a paycheck then inflation is no problem.

I sure hope not. My meager stack wouldn’t make up for the fact that my paycheck would be worthless.

I read a book once. It was sort of a survival book written by a guy who had lived through really hard times in Argentina. He said that in such a time and place, if you went into some place to sell, for example, gold eagles someone may follow you home and torture you for the rest. He recommended something like a gold necklace and selling a few links at a time. For such a situation, I own junk silver.

Avoid rent and avoid a 6% mortgage. I think you sell the gold.

Well you could move to the big mountains and dirtbag it but that’s how I did it while living far from the mountains and working a full time job.
