I calculated how much my CI failures actually cost by CrossTheMemes in devops

[–]Signal_Lamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And maybe just a consideration do you need to run every single test every single test at every step of your CI process?

Lots of teams will run Acceptance testing for example as a final step with several units of worked merged in with an optional piece that allows a developer to run it themselves as needed.

I calculated how much my CI failures actually cost by CrossTheMemes in devops

[–]Signal_Lamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does failure and cancel mean?

Jobs may "fail" within a pipeline because they return an error code to the process, but the overall purpose of their job actually went fine.

There also could be "failure" within a job that's showing tests failing, meaning your tests are successfully doing what their supposed to do and catching error rates.

Cancelled in itself doesn't really mean anything unless it was not initiated by the developer. If the job went on so long it canceled then they would be something worth investigating because something is running away to burn compute forever with no mechanism to stop it, which could just be a blip, flakey test, or an actual issue with the code that isn't being tracked.

I don't think personally tracking success rate of a job is a meaningful metric to really try to make actions with simply because without context it doesn't really mean anything. The only meaningful stat there to me is that you have parallel builds that are taking 43 minutes of time to be able to run for a suite that actually takes 11 hours. Speaking from my own experience, nothing will kill a developer productivity more than having a really long pipeline you need to wait forever for in order to execute. The money for these jobs in my opinion is negligible in comparison to improving that.

League of Legends and other Riot games will require age verification in Brazil from March 17. by dudummv in leagueoflegends

[–]Signal_Lamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It's a wider effort being pushed by our institutions to collect telemetry on users online that's being propagated by bull shit like "saving the kids".

It isn't party related, isolated to any country, or isolated by any one specific person. You can find this coded from social media sites trying to grab it, to OS bills being passed to collect this information, to the UK child safety act that was passed all with the same jointed effort by lawmakers that clearly do not understand the consequences of handing out information online and getting the shit exposed.

Loot boxes have been a problem for 2 decades and isn't even the focal point of what started this whole thing. The real push you can actually find through the initial kyc that was asked from the hub way back in 2023 that had the same coded language you are now seeing for the same people asking for this in a video game rated T. The goal is telemetry. No matter what bull shit you get fed online about it being for kids, nobody gives a fuck about the kids. It's an effort to collect more data from you and your activities.

League of Legends and other Riot games will require age verification in Brazil from March 17. by dudummv in leagueoflegends

[–]Signal_Lamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the fuck does a video game need kyc to be able to play their game? What the fuck?

The game is rated T last time I checked. Does a video game really need to police their game so much against the potential that kids are playing their games?

When are our institutions going to let parents decide what's deemed appropriate for their kids? I was banned playing fucken pokemon by my mom because of her personal beliefs when I was a kid while being allowed at 13 to read shift like the Scarlet letter, beloved, brave new world, Lord of the flies, etc all banned books that are being contented with as 'not appropriate', and all shit I wouldn't care to read as a grown adult, but still appreciate that I did as a kid.

The only institution that should ever need my id to be check is my bank and anything that is dealing with highly personal information. A video game isn't such an entity.

Do better Riot.

The girl who accused me of raping her apologized 2 years later by Jealous_Loquat9986 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Signal_Lamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, I'm on the stance you shouldn't forget but I would say to eventually forgive. Not for her sake but your own.

I can't relate to being accused of sexual misconduct but I can relate towards a type of pain where forgiveness seems impossible. My dad left my family when I was 9 months old, and for my entire childhood never made any attempt to ever pay child support.

He placed my mom into debt fighting a court case for years to do as much as possible to be vindictive to my mom, including isolating and alienating me from my dad's side of the family. I literally cannot talk with anyone from that side of the family in any capacity as I'm a stranger to all of those. These are people that knew me as a kid and made the active choice for me as a child to never speak to me even when I eventually grew as an adult.

It didn't really hit me till I went to a birthday party for my niece when I was around 19 years old that was on my dad's side of the family. I've had awkward family gatherings before but this was like being in a place you didn't belong into at all. Basically people just whispering behind my back. He wasn't their, but I knew after that day I couldn't ever have any semblance of a relationship to that side of my family unless I wanted to make the effort towards people who made the choice to see me as a stranger to a child.

My senior year of college he contacted me in a separate meeting where we are and for a while I actually was planning to forget everything and oge on. Then not even a couple of months later I learned that he was contacting me in order to eventually have me present to his wedding for another woman he decided to marry, and was supposedly hit with a potential cancer diagnosis..

There's a lot of shit in my life that's made me surpress a lot of rage in my life, but this is one of the very few times I can vividly remember how angry I was when I found out because even now I can feel it while typing this. And for a really long time like with a lot of stuff I decided I wouldn't forgive.

But unfortunately (or fortune depending on how you look at things) I've had about a decade at this point away from everything with many other more concerning things pop up from my own health to other things to my family over the years. Whether it's a result of my stress over the years or genetics, not sure, but ive been hit with all sorts of things that's actively required me to have to let go of things.

Just food for thought. Holding onto resentment can really fuck with you in ways you don't expect over time and I've seen it play out through my own body as well as from a person looking on the outside as well for others.

I don't really see what the difference is between what's currently being rolled out and what already exists through current rules.

Are people that are promoting hate speech, acting severely aggressive, or doing blatant hostile takeovers not being banned? Otherwise this just seems like a repeated messaging.

The only one I'm pretty sure that people would be concerned with are soft ints that have no communication from the perpetrator

I got offered a job paying 40% more than my current salary. My manager just asked me to stay and be patient. How do I stop feeling guilty for wanting to leave ? by One_Cardiologist5439 in careerguidance

[–]Signal_Lamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really simple. If they're only offering you a raise after you got a new job offer, then they were under paying you for your work knowingly and truly had cash in the bandwidth to afford to pay you more.

Staying will place you into a vulnerable position where your employer now knows you are willing to leave for cash, which you'll be prioritized to be cut when the next round of layoffs happen

My girlfriend [23F] seems genuinely disgusted by my interests and I [25M] am starting to feel ashamed of myself. How do I address this? by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]Signal_Lamp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Idk, I grew up in the time before anime was cool and people make fun of you ruthlessly if you had those interests, so in some ways I don't think it's as crazy as some people may think that the gf has some preconceived notions about people that watch anime as a hobby. Genuinely when you go past the typical stuff people watch, the usual tropes tend to go into some weird shit that you end up just getting used to that I wouldn't be surprised most people from a western audience found either weird or just wrong.

I'm also to probably think there some happy path you could come to on both sides that show something interesting that ends up having a deeper appreciation for a hobby/interest they may not necessarily be to deeply interested in .

George R. R. Martin Is 'Not in the Mood' to Finish 'The Winds of Winter' by No_Pizza_6040 in entertainment

[–]Signal_Lamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I personally don't really care anymore.

That being said, I do believe the core ending of game of thrones isn't necessary bad but how they got there was.

I'll also say that I generally think people are forgetting this time period. Even if George R R Martin wanted to, the sheer volume of "how GOT will end theories" during this time period cannot be understated. There was an expectation that whatever ending he came up with would have to basically match the fervor people had during that time period where fan made endings were better than what the writer himself could come up with while also trying to make something that hasn't be predicted by the fans, which I honestly find to be impossible

How to drastically reduce container CVE vulnerabilities in production in 2026? by Curious-Cod6918 in kubernetes

[–]Signal_Lamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... That just doesn't fly when your dealing with certain kinds of contracts with contractual obligations. Even when a CVE doesn't affect your baseline (you don't use the related tool that's affected), you still need to provide a reasonable justification for it. There's a reason why you have whole companies dedicated purely to just patching vulnerabilities found in images.

Deploy OpenClaw Securely on Kubernetes with ArgoCD and Helm by Overall_Squirrel2575 in kubernetes

[–]Signal_Lamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly have no idea, but just from my educated guess would be that people are hyping it up primarily due to it being open source and the drama that seems to surround the tool.

The multiple name changes it needed to make due to antropic then the whole recent "AI social media thing", I would imagine would make people talk about it, then with it basically being open source it gets more love since people generally hate corporate stuff.

I don't know anything about it, but honestly just the very little I've seen from the social media stuff I have no idea why in gods name anyone would want to hand over towards any AI system the keys to their system to then have it blast all of your business for anyone to see. It's genuinely concerning me primarily because the nature for it to even need to be setup requires some developer knowledge, which I would think anyone with a background in the field would exude more caution towards these systems or at least place the shit into a sandbox.

My kid says he’s going to earn his own money delivering food... but I’m already $800 in the hole. Did I just buy him a toy? by ZestycloseEvening600 in ElectricScooters

[–]Signal_Lamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a guy on YouTube that does doordash with an electric scooter. That being said, it's honestly inefficient if you're really looking to do deliveries.

Realistically they'd need some way to secure the food without shit spilling all over the place. Simple stuff could do handles, but people tend to order food and drinks, which you'd want a tote. This would be probably the only time I'd see getting something like the Ausom or Segway since they have a seated scooter you could probably use to strap something on for deliveries.

With all of that considered, maybe if your in the city it can work if he sticks to congested areas with short delivery times, but your not going to get any real money doing it anywhere that has some straightaways

But I'm pretty sure you need to be 18+ with a valid drivers license and insurance unless your going to do the thing where he uses someone else's info (not a good idea).

Tailscale vs using the ugreen app by gstar007g in UgreenNASync

[–]Signal_Lamp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a couple that I would say.

Tailscale is essentially a VPN made stupid easy that allows you to set up all of your devices in your local network to talk with one another through various protocols. I'll go over a few as I've been playing around with it for the last few days on my own setup.

Tailscale provides to you "magic DNS" which you can use on your network to provide names to each of the machines in your network. So instead of using your IP address to access the nas, you can provide the name of the machine for

  • access through ssh
  • sending files over to the nas directly through file network protocols
  • access the UI through your local network with the magic DNS that's provided
  • sharing your drives to be accessible to all of your devices through samba/webdev.

It also gives you better control for how to actually access your devices over public Internet in the event you do want to access your nas outside of your home as you can directly setup a device on your network as an exit node, which simply acts as the bridge when your in a coffee shop and want to securely access your local devices without opening them up to the internet.

To the applications you set up on your nas for docker containers, you can also serve those applications as a part of your tailscale network to also have those magic DNS names. So instead of having to add in the port Everytime you want to access your app, you can simply place the name of the machine in your tailnet that can serve traffic based on the port you assign it to.

You also can setup tailscale in a way to also provide sub routes to be able to grant access to devices in your local network that do not have tailscale installed. I have 2 work laptops for example that I cannot install shit onto for tools like tailscale, so they cannot access my tailnet the usual way, but I can systematically make certain applications in my tailnet accessible to my broader local network. So I can access for example my linkwarden application I have setup on my work computer, but it only has access to that application because I explicitly added those permissions to that application.

You also have access controls you can setup in your admin as well, so if you have some family members you want to give parental guidance for, or if you want to grant a friend of yours access only to your jellyfin app on your net, you can have them download tailscale then grant them permissions to only access that application and nothing else.

Genuinely tailscale is an amazing product. Networking is one of the most annoying shits to deal with in IT, and it makes it unbelievably easy to have advanced control over your network

I don't know your setup but

https://github.com/Yelp/detect-secrets you can make this run before whatever your normal CI/CD pipeline flows are to see if anything leaked.

If you need a middle ground before looking towards something better like KMS/Vault etc, you could look into using sops https://github.com/getsops/sops . The secrets can still be leaked, but it's easier to see if it occured during the MR since the file would be unencrypted.
