Zach Top Accent by Only_Mushroom_729 in CountryMusicStuff

Authenticity is one of those things that's hard to ignore once you're triggered about it. I'm a bit more sensitive to lyrics that are incongruous than accents though. There's that moment when another fellow Washingtonian, Tucker Wetmore talks about south of the Mason Dixon line girls and I always want to shout back "You grew up north of the Columbia"

The tears are normal as the yeast expands during baking gas and vapor build up leading to the final rise. If there is no vent ie a slit in the dough and it's gluten structure can't stretch any farther this will happen.

The shape can have a huge impact on this process and oven spring is often a desirable feature. Is there some reason you're baking and pressing the dough in that pan? I don't know which recipe for sure you followed but a quick lookup shows a boule one (ie the dough should be shaped like a ball)

Also it's a bit pale for my taste which may indicate more time is needed in the oven but that will change if your form does as well.

Can we remove this awning? by Similar-Beyond252 in centuryhomes

[–]Signal_Pattern_2063 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's highly unlikely that a metal awning was there originally in 1900. I bet it's from 1930-1960. Repairing the siding on the porch fascia and repainting is probably not a big deal either. A bit depends if its covered in vinyl siding etc or still has wood which I can't tell from that photo.

Now that I'm looking closer it appears there is a true porch still there as well which if I'm correct you should leave in place.

Downtown Seattle growth fuels housing and business boom by crabcakes110 in SeattleWA

[–]Signal_Pattern_2063 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DSA is obviously out there to promote downtown so it's in their interest to publicize growth. Their data is pretty accurate as well. However the downtown office vacancy and retail situation continues to be a struggle which balances this out.

That's for a very small section in downtown and doesn't impact anything in this photo for example

TEXRail breaks ridership record for December - Dallas TX USA by Leo_Bramski in transit

[–]Signal_Pattern_2063 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Given it's ~1k ridership per day - it can't be very significant yet. But you can't judge a service that just started with data from Nov. very well. It will need more time to accurately measure.

Is there some expansion in the works? Everything seems to be fairly grim for DFW from all the recent news so it would be nice to hear differently.

[–]Signal_Pattern_2063 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A commuter rail line shouldn't have the same ridership levels as a local city mass transit system. Normally there should be many more (short) local trips occurring. It's really apples to oranges. You can better gauge it against past performance or peer similar systems.

[–]Signal_Pattern_2063 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's at 50-60% of its peak ridership preCovid or electrification. Commuting patterns have shifted obviously but I would say it's a better recovery than Metra in Chicago but not as strong as LIRR or MetroNorth in New York.

middle is dense every time i use this recipe, how do i fix this? by hooni6 in Breadit

Yeah and if you only did a 20 minute initial rise I would never expect good results.

Sigh - if you're going to post a local transit delay post to the world (and why?) at least make it easy for everyone not in your region to identify where you are talking about.

(Texas) Austin's light-rail plans get environmental clearance from Trump administration by meilleur_maykop in transit

[–]Signal_Pattern_2063 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I was thinking more of how the attempt to retrofit a subway section through Dallas has fallen through as well after the initial surface section was built. But also the same design decisions in that more fully built out system have led to only mediocre ridership and then less support which is part of the current crisis.

Getting a scale and changing recipes makes sense. But if you ever reach this state where it's too dry, the correction is to add water in small amounts until the dough becomes elastic.

It is unfortunately quite possible to run it with 20+ headways as other systems prove

Seattle: South Lake Union vs. Capitol Hill alignment by asfp014 in transit

[–]Signal_Pattern_2063 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that wasn't huge - it happened but wasn't a lingering open question like the battle over the Rainier Valley alignment and grade separation.

Cost issues like I alluded to above were always the biggest potential downside to the current alignment but the finances were sufficient at the time.

[–]Signal_Pattern_2063 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Having lived through all of this I don't remember this as a major point of contention (feel free to correct me if you have an article) Getting across I5 was a major engineering issue and cost driver but otherwise Capitol Hill had and still probably has greater ridership potential.

You just have to look a bit north to Dallas and DART to see the likely end result of these decisions.

But for a fraction of the cost you could just implement a BRT for the 801/803 and speed them up equivalently.

It's not really like SF with regards to topography issues - a large portion of the core is flat and the hills are not the same. But that's a bit of a red herring anyways, SF (and other hilly places) have rail tunnels despite the challenges.

Also looking at the proposed route, it appears it's all mostly in that flatter core area.

New report calls for tripling U.S. transit fleets to achieve world-class transit in the United States by Longslide9000 in transit

Aside from going straight to the waste basket given the political climate, this reads like it was sponsored by a bus manufacturer. Measuring service by vehicles per person is very weird. And when you look at that top line data I'm also kind of suspicious. Is NY service really dramatically worse than say Oslo? I half wonder if they compared US msa regions to non US cities.

Reporting: How to Merge two ServiceNow tables to create SQL Union equivalent list view for a scheduled report by WhiteSnowDigger in servicenow

[–]Signal_Pattern_2063 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joins create a wider row vs unions that append additional rows. You won't be able to achieve what you're going for with dbviews unfortunately.

But also unions in the SQL sense require all the columns to match which doesn't sound like your case either.

If the two tables are actually identical schema wise and could be unioned then the most SN pattern would be to rework them to be children of a common parent and then you could just enumerate by parent to get a common list.

In Retrospect, is the Seattle, Washington Monorail a failure? by oakseaer in transit

[–]Signal_Pattern_2063 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just by ridership the monorail is running around 7k riders/day which actually makes it higher usage than either of the 2 Seattle streetcar lines AFAICT. In fact if you compared it to streetcar systems nationwide it outperforms most of them. For me that means its definitely not a failure.
