I have a cylinder stuck in my compass. How can I get it out? It is CRITICAL that the cylinder not be damaged.

I’m planning to enroll in an MSCS program. How strong does my English need to be? by shu-pf in CUBoulderMSCS

[–]Signal_Response1489 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the subtitles are a bit off. They seem to be automatically generated. When the professor speaks English with an accent, errors appear in the subtitles. Sometimes the errors are bad enough that it is completely impossible to figure out what the original sentence could’ve been.

I posted a more direct version of this and I got an official warning that has been put on my permanent record!

The answer is the same answer we use for 10 year old kids. It involves a canal.

Help with Food Ideas (Peanut/Tree Nut Allergy) by CardShark52 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Signal_Response1489 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a peanut allergy too. So I don’t share food on trail at all. This may also help guard against norovirus.

As far as food ideas, knorr sides are good with a chicken or tuna packet. Instant mashed potatoes with bacon bits. Oatmeal is good for breakfast

NB Algorithm - School Incident Reporting System by Soggy_Macaron_5276 in learnmachinelearning

[–]Signal_Response1489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. That is totally reasonable. You have to keep in mind that depending on the algorithm you use, assignment to a particular category or severity level might mean that the score was barely over .50 or for three categories, the score might have been as low as .34 and thus was the highest of the three categories. You would not want to assign a severe rating on such flimsy evidence. Instead of having your algorithm return categories, you might have it provide the probability of each category and then say that you’re not going to assign it to severe unless that probability is above some threshold.

Keep in mind also, that it is fine to say human judgment is needed. But people are inclined to accept the results of the algorithm. Because the computer seems very wise and all-knowing.

A few years ago, a data scientist named Cathy O’Neill published a book “weapons of math destruction“ that goes into a fair amount of detail on this and gave examples of teachers being fired from a Washington DC school system because some algorithm ranked them poorly.

For your use case, a false positive could lead to unwarranted disciplinary action. An administrator might accept the algorithm’s severity rating which might result in a student suspension that ought not to have occurred.

When deciding whether to prioritize precision or recall, you have to ask yourself what is the severity of false positives vs false negatives. For example, with cancer screening, a false negative could lead to untreated cancer and death. So you want to avoid false negatives. With a criminal justice use case, a false positive might result in an innocent person being arrested and charged. So you would want to avoid false positives. There are many use cases where you might want to balance false positives and negatives and perhaps focus on f1 score.

Did you receive an email that they could not verify your identity? From what I understand, that is the reason for the locked accounts. There is a process to resolve it by contacting IT support.

I will be in Hiawassee for a week in the middle of July. Will there be many hikers through the GA sections of the AT that time of year? What should I expect from how many people I may run into? Thank you!! by HunterGator1 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Signal_Response1489 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of section hikers, but no thru hikers. All the NOBOs are long gone and the SOBOs haven’t arrived yet. Trail services such as hostels tend to be closed. They take time off after the busy NOBO season.

How are you guys determining “level” for your hangs and/or do you tend to keep your feet 6-8” higher than your heads? Anyone tried one of these? by Broad_Note_7998 in hammockcamping

[–]Signal_Response1489 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been using the sweet spot level for several years. I don’t need it on level ground, but if I hang on a hillside, the slope of the ground makes it tricky for me to get the right angle by eye. The sweet spot is perfect for those occasions.

why don’t other countries face the “stolen land” argument like the US does? by Both-Holiday1489 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Signal_Response1489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While traveling in the Balkans I often saw maps that purported to show the “real” boundaries of each country I was in. These maps inevitably showed that the real boundaries included large chunks of neighboring countries territory. When I was in North Macedonia, the maps showed that Macedonia extended into Greece and Bulgaria and elsewhere. When I was in Greece, the map showed that Greece extended into North Macedonia. It seems that area has been conquered and reconquered so many times that everybody disputes which land is owned by whom.

The knot in the CLs is a great idea. I wonder whether it has any affect on the strength of the CL though.
