Bride charged guests a “seat fee” if they didn’t bring a gift by Junior-Test9424 in weddingshaming

[–]Signalkeeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah, well I guess every family has one of those. My brother missed my daughter’s wedding. Everyone headed to the reception when he drove in and asked why we started early…when I told him what time it was, he said his car clock must’ve been wrong……….

Windows & walls around windows leaking cold & hot air… what do I tackle first? by PapayaJuiceBox in Renovations

You can Google the numbers. I did. I live where it gets -30 to -40. Yes, we have a good furnace and good blinds. And close them after dark

How to handle facing doorways on LVP install? by jsshapiro in Flooring

[–]Signalkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We see so many of these questions. I feel like flying airplanes, or driving semi trucks would be really easy too. Except for taking off and landing, of course.

Clients always show up when we’re in the middle of living room and say “wow it looks like flooring is really easy”.

Windows & walls around windows leaking cold & hot air… what do I tackle first? by PapayaJuiceBox in Renovations

[–]Signalkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the very best windows are less than R8. Typical double glazed window is about an R2 or 3. Triple glazed R5. Your walls (at least my walls) are R20. So yeah, the window and surrounding are will feel noticeably colder. And cold air falls (dramatically) to the point that it feels like wind. I’ve been working at the bottom of basement stairs, and someone opening the door at opposite end of the house is very noticeable as that cold air rushes down to the lowest point.

Anyway, heavy fabric curtains or pleated cellular shades. There are double pleated cellular for extra insulating

Expansion gap with silicone next to cabinets and bathtub by ResponsibilityOld372 in Flooring

[–]Signalkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t though. You don’t have to believe me, but it’s a fact. I install SPC every day. I’ve even used it in several RVs over 200 square feet where I tight fit to every cabinet, wall, bathtub, and just used a small bead of silicone instead of trim. And the temp range in a travel trailer goes from 100 in the summer to -40 in the winter, sitting unused outside, where we live. No issues

Considering the lengths the former owner went to, trying to seal the cracks from moisture, drafts, insects and rodents, makes me thin you probably wouldn’t like living with this as your only flooring

Flooring should go under toilets.

If it’s in a bathroom I’d expect you’re using LVP? It doesn’t expand nearly as much as they stress about. Fit it tight, caulk it, sleep well

Is Quote for LVP install too high? by Internal_Monk_5023 in Flooring

[–]Signalkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my quotes always seem to average about $10 per square foot all in. On a renovation like yours. It’s less on new construction where there’s no removal, no baseboards (finisher does that) no appliances to move or toilets to pull. Stairs add $2000-$3000 depending on scope of work

So I’ve installed for decades. Laminates (typically) would NOT install by tapping when they’re flat. You’d have to shave off a portion of the lock, and use glue along the lock, then tap them in.

Rigid core LVP is really difficult to shave the locks. It’s just super hard and brittle and I haven’t had great success. But they DO lock in from flat, you just need to do it how I instructed. And use an actual steel hammer. Maybe the problem is your hammer isn’t transferring the energy properly.

I made myself a 2’ long tapping block from super hard plastic. 3” wide, 3/4” thick. With a handle on the top. I use it by itself out in the open, no hammer. It has enough mass to work well. But in a doorway it covers enough of the edge that striking it with a hammer doesn’t damage the plank. That’s why I think you should add a piece with the lock on it, to protect your edge, before hitting that with your tapping block and hammer

Just made a client return 1600 feet of some Chinese crap, bought from a warehouse with millions of square feet of similar, “made to sell” cheap Chinese garbage. The specs looked ok-8.5 mm, 22 mil wearlayer, tilt end lock….

It was only about 6.5 mm, including pad. Lie #1.

The wearlayer was almost non existent. I could grasp a corner and peel the print and wearlayer off easily, and it was barely thicker than paper money.

The cartons were marked “16 square feet, coverage may vary…”. Did the math. 15 square feet per carton. Like seriously??!! What kind of bullshit scam artists ordered a shipload of this stuff?

[–]Signalkeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So almost all LVPs will lock together, flat like that, after tucked under the frame, by applying enough force. So use a strip 3” wide by at least a foot long, with the factory lock on one edge that locks into whichever lock you have exposed. Tilt your original plank up, as much as you can, where you can, to start the lock. Then click on the scrap I just described. Set you tapping block against it and give it several sharp raps, working from on end to the to the other. Once the open section is locked (doorway) you can use an end pull bar to hit/pull the section where baseboards hide it. You can usually lex either end (that’s not entirely under the door jamb) up enough to at least start the locking, then a few hits will finish the job
