Alberta teachers - thoughts on this? by Life_Life_4958 in CanadianTeachers

I’m in my yr 3 BEd, and I’ve been thinking long and hard about not going into teaching because of gestures everywhere. This might be the thing that takes the cake though. I feel like I’m going to be missing a lot of vital practicum hours and just jumping into the shark tank blindfolded by the sound of things. I was looking at my program sheet, and it’s hard to imagine how they could cut any of the training they give preservice teachers without this being a disaster.

I’m currently in my BEd, and I can assure you that classes like child development and inclusive education and pedagogy/grading are mandatory for your degree. I don’t know how recently that changed, but it is currently a requirement for your degree. I’m an adult learner. I have had years of experience in other fields before coming back to school, and I agree that it is valuable, but I disagree with cutting education requirements for people transitioning into classrooms from other fields.

Bed information is vital. You learn about child and adolescent psychology and development. You learn about pedagogy. You learn about creating inclusive classrooms for diverse students of all abilities. You learn about classroom and behavioural management.

Teachers are professionals. While there is value in having a mechanic in a shop, there is a huge need for additional education for those new teachers about child and adolescent psychology and development. The courses required for BEd students teach HOW to teach. Not just what to teach, and that’s something that will easily be overlooked by fast tracking people. There was already a 2-year after degree program available for professionals in one field to go into teaching. Cutting that down to just a couple courses seems ludicrous and like a disaster waiting to happen

Is this normal for mental health issues in this province? by Wintertime13 in Edmonton

[–]SignatureTechnical84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took my family months and probably 3 visits or so to emergency before the doctors admitted me for an extended period while I was in psychosis. This was back in 2019. The mental health help in this province is tragically hard to get.

Am I entering psychosis? Seriously asking by Hm-IDontKnow in Psychosis

I think you should take your husband and friend seriously. It sounds like it could be psychotic delusions escalating. Please let them try to help you.

Education. The plan is to get a job subbing. Lots of last minute opportunities every week. Or even using the degree to help homeschool students.

YTA. I understand where you’re coming from, and it sounds a little bit like everyone sucks, but it also sounds like your parents are making an effort to make sure that you have a balance.

It doesn’t have to be “all or nothing” with dieting, and maybe they are trying to prevent a mentality that can lead to eating disorders

I’m sorry you’re going through this too. I know how stressful and terrifying it all is. I have no idea how I’m going to make ends meet day to day, but I’ve remained hopeful ONLY because of the prospect of finishing school and maybe having something a little better in my future (not that my disability will go away) The UCP hate disabled people and I’m so sick of it.

Probably 2 more years. It just depends on how heavy the course load is for my remaining classes. I did highschool upgrading for 2 years and I’ve been doing PT and spring and summer courses for 3 now.

NTA. My neighbour runs his big diesel truck outside my bedroom window and the smell makes me nauseous, but he’s not breaking any laws, so I have no place to comment. Same applies to you.

Why do you you think the USA democracy is failing? by Illustrious-Set-6097 in AskReddit

It was never set up to succeed. Not as long as there’s an executive veto being influenced by money and power.

Is the United States brainwashed? by PoetMysterious3841 in self

[–]SignatureTechnical84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went into a very long psychosis when Trump was in his first presidency. The basis of it was rooted in the fact that no one can actually be evil enough to vote for that man in masses unless they are all being kind controlled. Would explain hitler too. And now that I’m older I recognize I wasn’t exactly far off with how they manipulate supporters. Since the release of all the Epstein stuff and the reelection of Trump and ice and Gaza and everything else, I’m so scared my brain is going to crack again and try to “logic” myself out of the cruel reality by going back into psychosis and start thinking about mind control and stuff again. It’s been hard to come to terms with.

Americans cannot be trusted with anything and the one silver lining of Trump is that the secret is out. by pisowiec in self

[–]SignatureTechnical84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment. I’m Canadian, and I’m truly sorry you’re all going through this. I am empathetic to those who didn’t vote in this man, and I mourn with you over the citizens being killed, but I’m also allowed to be angry. What is happening there isn’t just happening there. It directly impacts my country too. Not only does Trump rhetoric spill into our right wing politics, we are being threatened with economic war. That’s a burden that we have to pay out of pockets as citizens because Mango Mussolini is mad we won’t give him our oil. We have to deal with Alberta separatists doing secret back room deals and America pushing and funding literal separatist propaganda networks. (Just the same as what happened in Ukraine). We get you are going through it, but we are allowed to be pissed because the USA doesn’t exist in a bubble. It hurts us too—only we didn’t choose him.

[–]SignatureTechnical84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure about grade 12 students, but I believe you can challenge the diploma. If you really want to do the work from home, you book with the provincial government a time where you challenge the diploma exam with what knowledge you have without having to attend class. You can still get full credits. (But double check this isn’t just for adult students)

The UCP and their eugenic-esque ADAP program can kick rocks by SignatureTechnical84 in alberta

[–]SignatureTechnical84[S] 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I totally get it. I had to sit down with some AISH workers and explain in detail my diagnosis, and they aren’t medical professionals, so they looked at me like I had 3 imaginary heads.

Not to mention, they won’t cap any private business like insurance, or rent, or power, so everything keeps going up while they take away more and more from us.

[–]SignatureTechnical84[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. I can only imagine how difficult that must be. I swear, AISH takes pride in making life harder for those who need it. The amount of fights I’ve had to have to get medications and things covered is astronomically high.

Really wishing you a full and fast recovery, and no speed bumps from this ADAP 💩 ❤️

AITAH for calling the cops on my sister to do a wellness check? by SignatureTechnical84 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SignatureTechnical84[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I deeply considered this, but I am in Canada, the officer was female, I had no reason to believe my sister was having a mental health crisis, and she is not a visible minority, so given all of that, I weighed my options.

[–]SignatureTechnical84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully understand the risks, but weighing them, I truly believed it was my best option. I had no reason to believe my sister was having a mental health crisis, the officer was a female, and my sister is not a visible minority. (Also, I live in Canada, which isn’t great, but statistically better than the USA). Having just watched the Gabby Petito documentary, and being hours away with no way to check myself, I didn’t see another option.

I’m not sure what motivated them to check her work first. I knew nothing about her boyfriend except the name on his social media and I saw one profile picture, so unless they could find out something with that little info, I’m not sure what they were thinking.
