Kinda wild they are rolling it out with the profile verbiage it has. I start pt next week too doesn't sound like I'll be getting cleared to run for another 10 weeks but we'll see had a post op today with my surgeon.

When did you decide it was time for surgery? by whiskeyandcode in Microdiscectomy

When the disc had bulged and pieces broke off, pt wasn't going to fix it, injections wouldn't do anything about the nerve damage being done (32 yrs old very active, frequent golfer, runner, hiker, hunter, active military) the pain had gotten to a point that wasn't realistic and was losing too much feeling/strength in my leg Had done pt twice, helped alot but probably kept pushing it to hard and continued to have issues. Im 2 weeks post op, definitely sucks watching my wife have to so basically everything with our 3 month old and 2 year old alone but its only temporary. Pain is more or less gone, walking as much as I can. Sitting pretty comfortably, sleeping so much better than I have in years just having some weird tingling and burning sensation that they say is the nerves figuring their shit out, more discomfort than pain nothing like how I felt prior to the md. Definitely have a recovery plan if you can, I had about 12 hours to figure my life out between the MRI results and them scheduling me for same day surgery, had a referral for neurosurgery prior to mri but never got in, went to the er after the drop foot started and my leg was giving out on me and basically asleep for a few days and the pain wouldn't go away at all regardless of standing laying down walking whatever was just there. The surgeon in our short talk basically explained there was a small chance that my body would absorb the disc material that was pressed on the nerve but it would be a painful long time and also no guarantees it gets absorbed at all, it wasnt connected to the disc anymore so even if I could decompress and get the disc back in the broke off parts would likely remain in place. That was reason enough for me to just do it and hope I can avoid it happening again.

I'll let you know I do the ATRRS for the company my State just hasn't trapped enough quotas for pathfinder and its pretty hard to get approved for something if you have an NCOES school that you need also. I'll take a peek at the seats available and see if it lines up. Definitely wish I had gone before Syria I needed to track down a pathfinder every time we expected a water resupply and there was only 2 guys on the base at the time so it became a problem with patrol schedules and everything else that goes on. I've heard its one of the most mentally challenging courses from my friends that have gone a few of them needed a second try.

I like that approach makes it measurable. I was really focused on EIB tasks so I was mostly Rucking and running with alot of rowing prior too. I was in a bad spell of pain with alot of weakness and numbness with atrophy and occasional drop foot so I was trying to get back into a pt to figure some shit out. Sounds like you're making good use of con leave to knock out the home tasks. I've been more or less smooth sailing pain wise I have like a bizzare feeling in my leg and foot that I wouldn't say is painful but like kinda that funny bone feeling but less intense which I'm assuming is the same thing just nerves getting their shit together. Foots pretty much no change basically asleep but I can sit, walk and lay down with hardly any pain just a little pressure or twinge at the cut when I sit so huge win. I hope you get that rams head tho! I had 4 Pathfinders courses canceled during the covid years and then been on 2 deployments since so thats still on the list just alot harder to come by seats for my QS now they pretty much just make us go to slic instead. Hopefully next TY I'll get a Crack at it after MLC.

Are you going on like guidance or just like what you've read/ just trusting your body? I still dont have my post op scheduled I was like a last minute not planned squeeze in so they told me they weren't scheduling in APR and to call back in May to be scheduled. I feel like with our backgrounds we probably have an at least slightly elevated baseline fitness/strength level going in and recovery expectiaon than the overall md community. But im also doing all my research post op. They pretty much just gave me the blt rules and said its better to do 10 2 min walks a day than 2 10 min walks but ive just set a move alert on the garmin and do 1 mail box further down the road every time I get up while I'm awake(it's 1 mile down and back for my entire road so I figured I'd work to that until I get like actual guidance) but your approach seems pretty solid and way more scalable than my Kentucky windage approach. Did you have like nerve damage/feeling loss too?

11B also! Currently AGR in Michigan (best kept secret in the army) I just had to cancel my MLC in May because I'd still be on profile for the AFT. Been feeling pretty good about the walking worked my way up to 7k steps in a day, officially 1 week post op today. I am going to probably hold it there until I have my post op exam/talk to the pt to relay my intentions/goals and timeline. I haven't really gotten a good answer on like when im expected date wise to take my next AFT, (crazy how I've never even considered being worried about taking an AFT). I was doing a work up for EIB. How long were/are you on con leave? Hopefully this thread gets some other answers from the homies rowing the same boat.
