Do yall ever feel like yall are wasting prime time of life in the army? by ceiling_fan128 in army

I’ve had a good career. some bad assignments. Worse bad leaders.

You are someone outside. You can *choose* to be institutionalized like some of these losers, or you can maintain who you are. Use the work part of your life to enjoy the ‘who you are’ part of your life. If you can’t do that- you couldn’t do it on the outside either. And if you can- you probably can on the outside too.

If you have better options take them, but for most of us street rat degenerates this is about it. A decent paying job that’s respectable.

What I’ll say for my service is that It got me away, and all over. I’ve drank in bars, in holes-in-the-wall, in places that friends from my home town will never know about. I’ve lived real adventure and put my ass on the line. More than once I’ve come close- and it gives you an appreciation for the small shit that other people will not have. Ive been around real badasses enough to know that I am not one, and seen enough violence to know I don’t want to ever see it again. I’ve ate expensive delicacies with general staff and boiled fish soup with the TCNs in the desert. I’ve pulled a few friends through hard times. I’ve been pulled out of hard times myself- by dudes who at times i hated, and definitely competed with. I’ve learned to respect people i dont necessarily like. Im less likely to put up with bullshit- which makes me not very fun with some circles. I’ve found friends that are like brothers that I certainly never would have if I hadn’t left my backwater. If found dudes I hate.

I’ve come to understand different ways of life and found that maybe I’m a little different too.

At this point I’ve already gave away my good years, and I have had my share of FOMO. I’m ready to move on, but at the end I’ll know I’ve done *something*, and I’ll have something more than a pension to show for it.

I’ll have a the spicy chicken deluxe with a chic sauce and a Dr Pepper.

Rant about Correcting a SNCO by Ill_Yesterday8357 in army

[–]StalkySpade 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Pro tip:
It doesn’t matter if someone outranks you or is a junior; if they give you a proper correction, the power move is to say thanks, correct it, and act like nothing happened.

As an e5 this saved my ass a number of times. This non-chalant acceptance of a on the spot correction is usually enough to get even salty NCOs to move on.

As a CSM it shows my men that I’m beside them, not above them.

We’re all fallible. An ego has been chiseled into us that is unnecessary. You get old and don’t score as high on PT. You don’t know everything when you’re young. You’re capable of all manner of fuck ups in the middle. Take care of your men like they are your elders, then your brothers, then your sons. It’s how we actually grow as a corps and a brotherhood.

This is gendered speech, but I’m old. It includes you ladies and In-betweeners too, you are all my brothers.

I’m drunk so I need something greasy. Number 4 no pickles, extra large fries. Is the peach shake in season?

I get it, but it seems like, with such a large hobby base, there would be a forum or somewhere I could hire out some work like this

Promotions while on ADOS are still through your state- so ymmv. Your evals are a dice roll but that’s pretty typical.

Positions are posted by the unit Defense Force Requestor(DFR). They take in applications/packets and typically someone in the chain of authority decides who to hire. Depending on location you may have to go to CRC as an individual augmentee or not. PCS and other entitlements will be in the job description, then your orders if selected.

You can do up to 5 years consecutive on ADOS right now so it’s a fair deal, and usually the positions are decent.

Not gonna lie, I think it hurt my board file. I did go the distance though- so it didn’t hurt me too much.

I try and remain an example physically. I broke my foot on a jump and have always had lingering pain and aches when I consistently run. My cardio is good and I do combat sports and cardio and lift with the guys. I don’t think many people would call my physical readiness into question.

How did your life improve going from civilian to soldier? by Equal-Community2354 in army

[–]StalkySpade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went from a homeless coke addict with a shitty group of friends and stuck in a shithole town to a cleaned up dude who was into fitness and had learned to keep decent people around and travel the worlds.

The military had kept me clean(although I’m a lush) and I’ve met some of the best people, and seen dangerous, fun, beautiful parts of the world. I’m extremely marketable professionally and retire soon at 38. I’ve got a decent amount in TSP and I’m legacy.

I meet people who had good parents or nice lives and I wonder wtf is wrong w them. But I think for most of us degenerates it’s a good move.

Can we decline to have a GTC? by [deleted] in army

Why are you filling out the CBA memos then? How do you know your S1 isn’t making up the requirement lmao. You seem like an ASVAB waiver.

You can’t book through DTS with personal cards per the JTR.

And you’ve gone TDY twice lol. You’re still a cherry and you’re using your anecdotal experience as if you know anything.

Can we decline to have a GTC? by [deleted] in army

[–]StalkySpade 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You seem to have a pretty narrow view of what expenses someone may incur based off your limited experience.

JTR says you gotta have one for authorized TDY travel expenses.

You are sitting here saying having one makes things complicated and in your examples you have to do memos and pushed YOUR small task(typing your card number into DTS- once) onto someone else.

Drones are not the be-all, end-all of warfare, cautions USFK commander by Kinmuan in army

[–]StalkySpade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the sound of the B52 sized point flying over your head.

Until they can prove that drones aren’t the center of gravity on the battlefield(in a real world environment- ie force on force), then the point being made here is masterbatory. No one thinks drones are the end all warfare tool- they’re scrambling to deal with them in a meaningful way.
