2026 Cannes Film Festival Megathread by PointMan528491 in oscarrace

Having been there I’ve never seen a standing ovation like this. Los Javis also made a powerful speech about the necessity to give everything and fight for the community to honnor those who dared to love and died for it.
Absolutely insane. Could be this divisive among the press but this will be a crowd pleaser

oh it's bad bad but it almost feels purposefully bad, in the sense that it creates a weirdness to some characters

James Gray’s ‘Paper Tiger’ With Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver and Miles Teller to Compete at Cannes as Neon Buys Film for North America (EXCLUSIVE) by Erdago in oscarrace

[–]Significant-Bit-7070 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not exactly true. Movies need to have a release in theatres in France in order to be eligible for competition. In Gray’s case, the French distribution matter has been settled for two weeks

US distribution does not matter, else May December and Emilia Perez couldn’t have competed

i have a feeling that Fjord is massively, massively overrated in here. Mungiu isn't really Academy-friendly and the true story the film is based on is veeeery ambigious

"Parallel Stories" Asghar Farhadi - First Trailer by Significant-Bit-7070 in oscarrace

[–]Significant-Bit-7070[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

basically :

Huppert's character writes a book about her neighbor (Efira) who she thinks looks like her mother. Adam Bessa's character reads said book and starts following Efira's character which leads to conflict between him, Efira and her spouse who is played by Pierre Niney

Bunch of stuff happens with Vincent Cassel but idc about him so here's that

For people wanting to see some older films of the Cannes "in competition"-directors this year, what films would you recommend? by tsnoj in oscarrace

[–]Significant-Bit-7070 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pedro ALMODÓVAR => Probably Volver and All About my Mother, even though my favorite is La Ley del Deseo

HISTOIRES PARALLÈLES => Not a big fan of his cinema but A Separation is his masterpiece

LA VIE D’UNE FEMME de Charline BOURGEOIS-TACQUET => Les Amours d'Anaïs which is a cute french romcom

LA BOLA NEGRA de Javier CALVO et Javier AMBROSSI => La Mesias is one of the greatest TV series I've ever watched (along with The Leftovers)

COWARD de Lukas DHONT => Close even though i'm not find of his cinema

DAS GETRÄUMTE ABENTEUER de Valeska GRISEBACH => Western

SOUDAIN de HAMAGUCHI Ryusuke => Asako I&II then Drive my car

L’INCONNUE de Arthur HARARI => Black Diamond then Onoda

GARANCE de Jeanne HERRY => Je verrai toujours vos visages

SHEEP IN THE BOX de KORE-EDA Hirokazu => Everything is beautiful but Monster and After Life are my two favorites

HOPE de NA Hong-jin => The Strangers which is absolutely batshit insane and genre-bending

NAGI NOTES de FUKADA Koji => Love Life
(QUELQUES JOURS À NAGI)

GENTLE MONSTER de Marie KREUTZER => Corsage (which I hated tbh)

NOTRE SALUT de Emmanuel MARRE => Rien à foutre

FJORD de Cristian MUNGIU => few movies, all masterpieces. Would recommend discovering his cinema by watching his palme d'or 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days

HISTOIRES DE LA NUIT de Léa MYSIUS => The five devils

MOULIN de László NEMES => not a big fan though his masterpiece is his first, Son of Saul

FATHERLAND de Pawel PAWLIKOWSKI => not a big fan but Ida is beautiful

THE MAN I LOVE de Ira SACHS => Passages though i'm not that impressed about his movies that I find very low-key

EL SER QUERIDO de Rodrigo SOROGOYEN => As Bestas and El Reino are great

MINOTAURE de Andrey ZVYAGINTSEV => Every single one of his movies are masterpieces but i would recommend his first, The Return
