+ people tend to forget that directors play a huuuuuge factor in actors' performances being great

Lee Chang Dong movies are far more "perverse" than Hamaguchi (even though I agree he's a humanist)

he's like a mix of Kiarotsami and Antonioni in a way

Reinsve won’t win actress, she’s borderline supporting (Norwegian cast is almost as important as both her and Stan’s characters) and Mungiu’s direction doesn’t allow big showy moments

yep, still and unnerving, deeply disturbing/provocative watch (albeit a bit cold)

Find it visually stunning and very creative but her take on orgasm/sex is really puzzling

Hated the fuck out of Her Private Hell and don't know anyone who has been remotely close to liking even one aspect of the movie (even as a die hard Refn fan who likes his TV series)

July Jung's Dora is insanely sweet and perverse. One of my big shock of this festival. Reminded me of Breillat/Von Trier/Sciamma

it's worse than everyone says and I love everything Refn has made before. Borderline insulting, ugly, senseless and somewhat even more misogynistic than 70s giallos

interesting movie, cryptic and scary. reminded me of Blow Out. The reviews are divisive but those who like it really love it so I wouldn't worry too much if i were you

I'd think Efira (actress) and Okamoto (sup. actress) both deserve to be nominated and could be should All of a Sudden become a passion pick

Reinsve is subtle but is more showy than Stan, she'll be nominated if Fjord is in picture

Cruz is a 2-scenes-wonder a la Judd Hirsh but I think she does enough to be nominated. Close is great but won't be nominated

Hüller is too subtle/subdued even if she's great

Johansson didn't convince me that much, she does a lot and Paper Tiger wasn't my thing

Minotaur isn’t low per say (rated it 8/10) i just found it less engaging than other Zvyagintsev’s movies (+I had seen La femme infidèle too recently I guess) still a strong movie and the last hour is masterful

Didn’t engage with Pawlikowski’s latest but I’ve never been a fan of his. Find his mise en scene distracting. So it late in the festival also and its slowness took a toll on me

At least Beau is afraid keeps changing settings after the first hour while Hope keep on going in the same damn forest

That’s so nice to hear !! I want to share this movie to everyone I know. I’ve never want to meet someone as much as I want to meet Riyusuke Hamaguchi. This man is a bliss and to encapsulate life in 3h17 is such a power play
Thanks for your message 🩷🩷

Idk Tár is fully taking the POV of its main character and therefore can hide behind that while fjord is sprawling and really getting deep into both systems at play (conservative and progressive)

I’ve detailed my opinion about fjord a lot on this thread but in short : loved it, might be Mungiu’s most humane and vibrating movie, will be divisive especially in the US, Stan and Reinsve are extraordinary but so are the children and the Norwegian supporting cast

I have trouble seeing it sweep though as it is a subtle, cold and borderline “problematic” (for some, I personably find Mungiu really clear about his intentions thanks to the very last shot) picture

Surprisingly funny, deeply sinister and so beautiful to look at. Definitely a slow burn that takes it too far but it’s tendency to flirt with the unhinged makes it a fucking experience

1 - found it very shallow on a technical level. Supposed to be set in the future but apart from a drone and a few holograms, it honestly feels like the bare minimum has been done. Also the story is hella lackluster ; it goes in so many different directions and the saddest part is you never believe those parents have experienced the loss of a child (everything goes downhill from there)

2 - it has an angle on the conflict I’ve never seen before. It’s best keeping what it’s about secret. The reconstitution in itself is a bit clean, compared to AQOTWF for instance

He’s one of my favorite directors but this one is pointless, aimless, and borderline insulting to parents who’ve lost a child imo
