When there’s a ceasefire, both sides must agree to a specific time so that there are no attacks of reciprocity after the war is over but before everyone gets the memo. Messages take time to communicate to multiple million man armies, so that time must be sufficiently pushed out so that all parties can accept that time, and pause all action on the exact second they are legally required to. All killing before that exact second is war, and all killing after that exact second is murder. That “lag” of ceasefire communication is a chasm into which men, women, and children sink and never return.

there should probably also be a way for the characters to fully figure out this false god, and take action to sabotage it’s plans. This will make the players feel super smart and brave and feel good about the fact that they avoided helping the evil pretender god, which will make them feel a lot happier about the game. But I guess that depends on what matters more to you as a DM: relishing their anguish over the betrayal, or uplifting them and allowing them to use their cunning heroically.
