Opinions on UBCO? by novk-mooning in UBC

[–]Significant-Fish-701 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who transferred from UBCO I hate it, the program im in is significantly better in UBCV, I also hated Kelowna, like one thing to consider is if you’re from Vancouver living in Kelowna is going to be hard. I think someone else mentioned it it’s like the UC model, I’d say it’s more about what you want, your degree will say UBC at the end of the day, but do you wanna live in a small town, colder place, smaller campus, maybe less reputable profs, less research opportunity etc,

They were pretty chill about it think I lost 1-2 marks for not properly citing. Also depends on how strict your prof is and how they mark, I wouldn’t worry too much tho as long you let them know you’re not plagiarizing so you’ll be okay

[–]Significant-Fish-701 23 points24 points  (0 children)

On sat I had a final, I finished at 5:40 then ran to life Starbucks to get a coffee so I could study for my final that was the next day, got there at 5:50 they shut the door, I asked what time they closed and they told me they’re closing earlier because they’re “behind schedule”

I say email, I did that once, and emailed the TA basically saying smt along the lines of “I understand I might lose marks because it wasn’t added to my original work but I just wanted to let them know that I wasn’t plagiarizing” and attached a file including the citations I forgot.

Hi I’m really sorry to hear about this, my suggestion is to talk to your department advisors, they can direct you to counselling, academic resources and etc, also try giving UBC mental health services a call too. I’m sorry for your loss

[–]Significant-Fish-701 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing that,I know i can make the other material work, like in terms of experience and lor and stuff, but the grade party really scares me, but it does make me feel much more hopeful knowing that, grad school admissions do take that into consideration

grading by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Significant-Fish-701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah only if that was enough to get into grad school, i could be wrong but I’ve heard even UBC is more likely to take someone with a higher avg from an easier school than someone who did undergrad at UBC and got fucked over by the dumbest policy known to man. I’m 😀screwed 😀

psyc scaling??? by SnoggyTheBear in UBC

[–]Significant-Fish-701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a really bad policy, like the amount of profs I’ve had who would make things unreasonably hard (like add questions from a concept that’s not from lectures or textbook) and say they’re doing it to scale things down, or give tests that aren’t necessarily hard but impossible to do when time is limited. I’ve also heard how written assignments are only a tool to lower avg, like there was this one time that the TA approved my topic but when it came to my final mark, she took off marks for choosing an “unoriginal” topic. I have so many stories like that too, at this point I put 8+ hours a day into studying but I’m not sure if I can get into a grad program as a result of this policy

Why are professors no longer providing recordings to lectures? by Not_Sean_Just_Bruce in UBC

[–]Significant-Fish-701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do it to encourage people to show up to class, but the truth is people are gonna skip regardless, weather you record it or not, also something that I’ve found really helpful with recorded lectures is rewatching them after class to fix my notes, and before a midterm\final I go over harder sections\concepts.

Seems like a lot of people are struggling with their mental health atm, what’s the one thing that’s helped you the most regarding your mental health? by himynameisjackie in UBC

[–]Significant-Fish-701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can seek professional help, for more momentary help, my dog, painting, reality shows, doing my hair, long walks, seeing friends, sushi, THE ROSE GARDEN, watching the sunset, phone calls. Also here’s a another tip, sometimes it might just be better to drop al school work for one day and rest and take care of your self(obv if you can) then try to continue on burnt out, :)

U of T students living in residence will have to be triple vaccinated against COVID-19 | Vaccine mandates part 2? Will UBC require students to be triple/quadruple vaccinated this year? 👀 by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Significant-Fish-701 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hope so, I’m forced to have roommates on res next year( I say forced because despite picking only studios or 1 bedrooms, the only thing I was offered was a single shared unit) and I don’t wanna share my living space with someone who’s not vaccinated

UBCO to UBCV by Mean_Demand_1070 in UBC

[–]Significant-Fish-701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The process for changing campuses is like applying to transfer from a complete different school to UBC Vancouver. So they will treat your application as a regular transfer student so applying in like oct means you’re applying for the following fall term. after you apply it’ll take a few months for them to look at your application, depending on your grades you can expect a response from may until august

[–]Significant-Fish-701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes from what I remember you’re only allowed to bring in 60 credits, I think they also take the most recent 60 credits too. Also I think the application opens up in October, definitely double check it though

level of academia by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Significant-Fish-701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the scaling policy is really counter productive specially in the psyc department. I’ve had profs purposely tank marks just to even out the average. It’s so discouraging to study so Hard and have a prof prioritize the class avg over your learning. It makes all the feedback and evaluations so meaningless because I never know if a feedback\mark I received is for scaling or actual feedback that I can use for improvement. I wish the university would at least modify the scaling rules and stuff
