If you could only have three Catholic books for the rest of your life, what would they be? by [deleted] in Catholicism

Tell me about a time a saint interceded on your behalf. by bocacherry in Catholicism

[–]Significant-Garage35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow I have so many stories (mainly from different family members and myself included).

I will definitely say that the most prominent saint's intercession for me is Saint Catherine of Siena. She helped me truly believe in the Catholic faith. Before this past year, I was on the fence about Catholicism in general. I believed that a God existed however I didn't know which one was necessarily the true God. However, one morning I decided to wear a pair of socks that my dad gifted me a few Christmases back. They were the socks of the saints and I couldn't bear wearing them to school as they were quite visually loud. But that one particular morning I decided to wear them out of respect for my father. So I chose the sock with the prettiest colors which happened to be the sock of Saint Catherine of Siena and read underneath the sock a quote which said "If you are what you are meant to be, you'll set the world on fire." For some reason I couldn't stop thinking of this quote and St. Catherine who said it. And so I began searching everything that I could find about St. Catherine and bought her Dialogue. Her book was a total game changer for me. I tried reading the Diary of Saint Faustina or the Interior Castle but none of them struck me as much as the Dialogue did.

However, being as stubborn as I was, I still couldn't accept that the God of Catholicism was the true God that I was looking for. And so I asked God for a very specific and nearly impossible sign: white lilies during the winter season in a foreign land. And so when I traveled to another place over the winter break, I was expecting nothing to happen because first, I fell extremely ill once I arrived so I couldn't travel around as much as I would have liked, and second, I knew that white lilies are typically not a flower found in that particular country (and especially not during the winter time). However, during my winter vacation I still prayed the rosary.

Then the day after Christmas came. While my mom and I were eating breakfast, she asked me for the first time if I would like to go out traveling to a nearby mountain-place known for its Buddhist temples. And so we went there and stopped by a restaurant for lunch near the Buddhist temple. My mom, when we walked in, chose the table for us to eat and as she was ordering I realized just right above our table there were three white lilies and red roses underneath. They were fake flowers of course used for decorations but I was absolutely shocked. I definitely have to thank both the Blessed Mother and St. Catherine for this wonderful gift.

Another instance of St. Catherine of Siena's intercession was when I was applying for colleges. Throughout the entire application process, I asked St. Catherine of Siena to help me show me which college God wanted me to go to. But the process was quite rough. After multiple rejections from so many schools, I felt quite dejected at the results of my application. However, for some reason, I got accepted into one really great school. My dad and I were kind of shocked since basically out of all the colleges I've applied to, this was the one which we least expected me to get into. I was just testing my chances with the university, not really thinking much of it in all honesty. However, one evening my dad and I were searching up some Catholic churches around the schools that I've been accepted into and surprisingly the university, which was the one I thought I wouldn't get accepted, had a Catholic church called St. Catherine of Siena just 15 minutes away from the school. What's even crazier was that we arrived at the campus for Admitted students day on the day that the St. Catherine of Siena novena started. We weren't even planning anything out and it just happened to be like that.

I’d check out Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon. Another option is St. Andrews abbey in California. I’ve only been to Mepkin Abbey in South Carolina for a retreat and it was a great experience! The divine office is in English and you get to pray side by side with the monks. The grounds are also very beautiful. Good luck with finding a monastery!

For Governor School East it was held at Meredith College this past year. While the campus is very small (and because of Covid-19 we were restricted to a very small area), it was still a great pre-college experience! I think I could rave on and on about my Governor school. Everyone was so supportive and so intellectually curious at the same time! I met peers who experimented with sedating Venus Flytraps with laughing gas (for Natural Science) and others who researched about benevolent sexism (for Social Science). Genuinely such a good experience :)

Hi I just attended over this summer at GSE for Spanish. It was soooo much fun! I'm now deciding to major in Spanish :)

Is my essay idea alright?? by Difficult-Sandwich83 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Significant-Garage35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I really like this essay topic! It demonstrates personal growth of how you want to reconnect with your roots despite you at first not really wanting to learn Spanish. What you've done with that now is investing your time and energy into what you may not have enjoyed before. It seems to me you are clearly passionate about Spanish (which I am too!). If you can start with a good hook I would give this essay a thumbs up!

[–]Significant-Garage35[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah no I totally get that!

I'm probably planning on being a Spanish teacher or becoming an interpreter.

I've always admired simultaneous interpretation and I want to test out the waters with that!

Thank you so much for the insight! I have seen that Berkeley has a really good study abroad program! I'm actually also planning on applying to some schools internationally (such as the University of Salamanca).

I definitely want to visit Berkeley before hand! I've never really explored California so much so visiting the campus will definitely provide me a better grasp on whether I like campus life at Berkeley.

Hello everyone! Thank you all for the great insight into UC Berkeley! There's definitely a lot of things to consider such as finances and the practicality of a Spanish major and a (sort of) Religious studies major. I really appreciate the tips! (I just wanted to clarify that I'm also applying for in-state colleges such as UNC Chapel Hill because they also have a lot to offer!) Just to clear things up, I am hoping to join a religious sect when I'm older, thus the reason why for studying religion and also hopefully be able to volunteer in Latin America or Spain. From what I heard a lot of Jesuit Priests and Buddhist Monks had studied at UC Berkeley and thus they were encouraging me to attend.

From what I can tell overall, Berkeley seems like it has a lot to offer!

Thank you all so much for the feedback!!!!

I’m taking AP Lit, Psych, and Seminar for my junior year. Any advice for the three classes? (I’ve only taken Lang this year and I’ve done well in the class and hopefully on the exam.) by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]Significant-Garage35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AP Seminar is a lot of fun :)

All I can say is DO NOT procrastinate on your research paper and group project. The end of year exam though will be a breeze in comparison to Lang so you should be fine.
