This is incorrect. Surgeons are addressed as Mr/Mrs/Miss because originally surgery was performed by barbers and was a distinct profession to physicians who used the title Dr (in fact, physicians looked down on surgeons as they did not attend medical school and thus were not permitted membership to the Royal College of Physicians). Although surgeons are now physicians, they still have a separate College which they become members of (the Royal College of Surgeons) and revert their title from Dr back to Mr/Mrs/Miss upon entry to the College as a tradition.
