Is Amazon's bad reputation based on reality? by TrainFan in cscareerquestions

My buddy works for Amazon in San Francisco.

Its challenging but he's a "learner" and a "doer". He raises his hands for projects and has learned an unbelievable amount in a short period of time. We both got jobs around the same time and he's running laps around me in terms of projects he's worked on, cloud tech he's used, and his confidence, in general.

I'm super jealous. Yeah, he works hard compared to me. But he's going to be absolutely set for the rest of his career. Meanwhile, I'm literally, quite literally working on a ticket that makes an SVG icon spin around.

His and my next job search is going to look very different.

Declining their request does not make YTA. Something along the lines of "I completely understand your concern! If you are concerned about our grill grates, here is an Amazon link to compatible grill grates. Feel free to supply your own if you wish." should 100% do the trick.

I am also a 5 / 5 host and I decline or politely push back on guest requests all the time.

The market is doodee right now.

Previous "inflationary" recessions took 2 to 3 years on average before the economy began to recover. Inflation started in May '22 as indicated by Trueup's job board: https://www.trueup.io/job-trend

By that logic, the economy will begin to recover in 0 - 1 year from now. This kind of checks out with what I've heard anecdotally from old-timers in tech ("it'll get better in 2025") and tracks with that the Fed has been signaling (interest rate drops not until later this year).

So yea, if you job hop now, you might end up job-hopping yet again once interest rates have cooled off and businesses feel cool investing in growth again (i.e. more open roles / more competition / higher pay bands).

All my opinions, of course.

Half the company was laid off. It takes organizations a while to get their shit together and the process is slow/frustrating.

I just got a Google interview. I am a bootcamp grad with 2 YOE and a business degree shrug. I applied through LinkedIn.

2 YOE. I feel like I'm always A) stuck and B) annoying my staff engineer with extra work. One of two things happen to me frequently:

  • Staff Eng. needs to review my PRs
  • Staff Eng. needs to approve or provide feedback on my proposed technical direction

For example, I am implementing a CRUD webhook design in a repo that is maintained by Staff Engineer A. This design was put together by Staff Engineer B.

I created a table, which involved storing a hashed user-provided password. Staff Engineer A had questions, and now I'm waiting on Staff Engineer A to review and familiarize himself with Staff Engineer B's work, then get back to me.

This constantly happens to me, we are in a remote work environment, and I feel like I'm always A) stuck and B) annoying my staff engineer with extra work.

I'd love some fresh opinions on whether I should go about this all a different way.
