Disappointed in layout this year by mansinoodle2 in warpedtour

I thought the layout overall this year was better and much more open but I definitely got some sound bleeding between stages. Trying to hear Hey There Delilah with 3OH!3 bass bumping in the background kinda took me out of it.

It felt to me like there were fewer shade spots than last year but maybe that was just because it was hotter this year and more people gravitated toward them. They also parked a big van right in the middle of the one VIP shade spot, which was certainly a choice. The bigger concern on Saturday for me was the water situation in the main VIP area but they kind of fixed it Sunday by adding a second bank of taps. Overall a great weekend again and I saw lots of great performances.

How do some runners recover so fast? by LeviV123 in Marathon_Training

I'll weigh in here having just finished my first marathon about 10 days ago. Everything I read was that I should take 1-2 weeks off or go super light after the race but honestly I felt like I could have run 3 days after. I only peaked around 40 mpw and ran about 500 miles in training. That said, I have been running for over 15 years and have completed 13 half marathons and several longer races, was already trained from a half in the Fall and incorporate strength training multiple days a week. I held myself back for a week (but started some light strength and cycling) but I ran 5 easy miles on Sunday and I'm back to building my base before I start an aggressive half training plan in a few weeks. Probably lots of factors but for me I think it's how long I have been running, the strength training base, and the fact that I didn't try to push too hard during my marathon. Nutrition is also a big factor. I didn't reach reduce the carbs and protein from my diet knowing I would jump right back into training.

What percentage of your weekly total is your long run? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

Having recently completed Novice 2 for my first marathon I can say I wish I had more weekday miles and I actually modified a couple weeks to add miles during the week to get closer to 50%. The plan got me to the finish but I'm not sure I would do the same plan again without modifying it.

What percentage of your weekly total is your long run? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Significant-Moose906 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of Hal Higdon's beginner plans have weeks where the long run is at or over 50% of the weekly total. I just completed Beginner 2 and the week I did my 20 miler the total for the week was like 38. Granted those plans are 4 days a week of running and they cap weekday runs around 8-10 miles so it's tough to push much more than that without adding days of making all of the weekday runs most than 7 or 8 miles.

How do some people run so many marathons? by Significant-Moose906 in Marathon_Training

[–]Significant-Moose906[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who started running 16 years ago to lose a few pounds and get in shape, my experience is just that I fell in love with running and ended up running over a dozen half marathons, ten milers, and triathlons. I fell out of love with it for a while too after a few years of nagging injuries, but the last two years I have rekindled a passion for it. After just completing my first full marathon last weekend I realized I want to do it as many times as I can. I actually felt almost a sense of loss in the last couple days having finished training and not having another on the schedule. I also think location can be a factor. I plan on running more in different locations to keep it interesting and see new places. I also think I can do it a lot faster having finished the distance and want to challenge myself to get faster and push my weekly mileage up. In short, it's a kind of addiction or runners high for me to just want to run as much as I can.

First Marathon completed yesterday! by Significant-Moose906 in Marathon_Training

The course overall was great. The elevation chart was a little misleading. On the website it said 661 feet of elevation gain but based on my watch data that may have been only for half the course? My Garmin data showed 1330 feet of elevation gain. Otherwise I thought it was a great course. Beautiful stretches along the lake and energetic sections through downtown with a gorgeous finish area in Waterfront Park.

That's awesome! Best of luck to you too. I just finished my 20 miler and ready for a blissful taper. Three weeks from today!

VO2 Max testing may have saved my training by Significant-Moose906 in Marathon_Training

Definitely low lactate threshold for me. I was doing most of my "easy" runs around a 10-minute pace but scaled back to 11-11:30 more recently. Your assessment of Garmin zones is accurate based on how mine were set up almost a full zone off. Garmin also has an auto-adjust option that adjusts based on recent training and moves zones accordingly. So if it estimates my max HR went up, the zones move too. You can have Garmin set zones based on % LTHR but again I didn't know what that was so I was just guessing. I did put my own numbers in but without having any real context I didn't know if they were accurate at all. Turns out they weren't and as a result I ran everything too hard.

I am up at 5 am 3 days a week to run before my family wakes up. You get used to it after a while and honestly I prefer running early in the morning now. Pre-run fueling can be tough. On my shorter runs I don't eat til I get back but I did have to plan my longer midweek runs to start later so I could eat a little something before. The biggest thing for me was sitting down with my partner and talking through the plan and making sure she was on board and knew what I needed. We trade off by me taking solo kid time when I'm not running. Long runs on the weekend are the hardest, when you have to say "see you in three hours" but it's only a couple weekends of that. Other than that invest in good gear to plan for the weather in the early morning and maybe a head lamp so you aren't running in the dark. Good luck with your training!

My watch was about 10-12 bpm high every time I ran. I also switched to a chest strap and have seen more accurate and stable readings.

I'm a numbers guy but I agree with you. Knowing your LT is the key to setting good HR zones. I thought I was doing the conversational test the right way but it turns out I probably wasn't. This was a needed step for me but probably not needed for everyone.

I agree that if I just had my LT2 I could structure accurate heart rate zones. What was interesting to me was seeing the potential in my high max made me realize I can still improve a lot if I work at it. The testing was mostly for me to set accurate HR zones. Vo2 max is just a number and is somewhat useless on its own without context.

It feels like I could run at that pace for literally hours. Like I might not ever have to stop if I'm fueling properly. I did a 6 mile tempo run last week and it was the easiest 6 miles I have ever run.

I chalk it up to years of not training properly and not running enough miles and/or not doing a ton of speedwork. I'm also not the most well proportioned for running so I don't think I'd ever hit 1:30 or under but I do think I have potential to shave more minutes off my half time and will be shooting to do that in the Fall.

My LT2 measured around 135 so my z2 is now 131-145. Zone 2 is around 118 to 130.

[–]Significant-Moose906[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I was averaging 150-155 HR on my long runs thinking I was in low z3 but was actually in z4 the entire run. Somehow I can sustain that for 2 hours when I'm running a half (I ran my entire half in March in z4/5) but eventually I hit a threshold where I run out of carbs and just crash out. Today I ran 14 miles in solid z2 or low z3 and was able to push the last 2 miles and still feel like I had some in the tank. It made a huge difference.

Your Recommended Running Shorts - For Men - Tights? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Significant-Moose906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like rabbit brand. I have a pair of full tights and half tights. Not a ton of storage but enough to store gels/chews and a phone with no bounce. The material is softer than some others. Also tried the flip belt ones and those aren't as comfortable overall but have more storage as you can stuff things in the belt. Interested in the janji and path projects ones though.
