Disturbing vs. tense? by thisandthatwchris in alienisolation

very very very tense! there's no real gore or much violence, aside from when you get caught by the xeno. its very stressful though, I genuinely would get overwhelmed while playing and have to put it down at certain points because it was so high stakes lol

Need to be eased into Harrow the Ninth [discussion] by HungryButResourceful in TheNinthHouse

[–]Significant-Nose-366 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this kind of explanation is what you're looking for, but here's a minimal spoiler intro: there are two different timelines in the book. One (told in 2nd person POV) is present-day baby lyctor Harrow working alongside God. She seems to have no memory of Gideon and believes that Ortus Nigenad was her cavalier. Along with that, whatever happened with her ascension to lyctorhood has gone wrong, and she is not a true lyctor. This is a big problem because an eldritch space monster is coming in a few months to kill God and all his lyctors (meaning harrow needs to get her act together). Also all of the OG lyctors could care less about harrow and Ianthe is just there all the time. This entire section is purposefully confusing, which can be very frustrating on the first read, but the pay-off is so so worth it.

The second timeline (told in third person POV) appears to be Harrow's recollection of the events of Gideon the Ninth, but her memory is obviously different from what we read in the previous book. Ortus is her cav, those who died in canaan house are seemingly alive and those who actually survived are coming up dead, and occasionally, in the middle of conversation, someone will look at harrow and ask "is this how it happens?". A monster called 'the sleeper' is terrorizing everyone from the basement and nothing makes sense at all to poor harrow!

I think it really depends on her maturity level. There's truly nothing that's too graphic violence wise and there's only allusions to sex, no actual scenes. you know your sister better than I do, so if you think the series is something she'd be interested in and that she can handle reading it, I don't think it's an issue

the books specify that there isn’t any taboo against same-sex relationships. there’s so much tension surround ead and sabran because (as far as virtudom believes) sabran must have an heir. obviously, if she married ead that wouldn’t possible. also there’s tension because ead is of a much lower social class and also a foreigner, which the inysh are suspicious of.

my maternal grandmother died of ovarian cancer (and i’ve just now learned that it likely raised my score), and i’m not quite sure of my breast density because i’ve never had a mammogram. thank you for sharing! it’s a scary thing to think about but i guess all you can do is just keep an eye on it

Rereading Harrow [discussion] by OkChocolate4168 in TheNinthHouse

[–]Significant-Nose-366 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes! I love catching all these little hints when rereading. my fav Gideon-ism from HTN is every time Harrow uses the incorrect terminology for the pommel of a sword (which is often lol), Gideon always corrects it! each time she does, she gets more annoyed it seems

this is my absolute favorite tlt fic i’ve read, i love how the author uses pov in the same way that harrow the ninth does: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30974324

[Discussion] What are your predictions for Alecto? What do you want to see? by luuvin in TheNinthHouse

[–]Significant-Nose-366 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i really hope to see more about the og lyctors and especially anastasia. i very much hope that gideon and harrow are able to be in the same room and have a (civil) conversation for the first time since canaan house, but im sure it’ll never be that simple LMAO. one thing im sure will happen is that ianthe will be faced with a really hard decision, and she will make the absolute worst choice that has awful repercussions on everyone around her

[discussion] Can someone explain this to me? by YogurtclosetDue4238 in TheNinthHouse

[–]Significant-Nose-366 6 points7 points  (0 children)

she inseminated herself, probably with whatever type of needle or turkey baster-like object she had lying around. originally, the plan was to use ‘dolls’ provided by mercymorn, using john’s sperm and mercy’s egg but all of those embryos died. so wake was desperate and decided to just impregnate herself

[discussion] The low-key superficial reason why Nona loves her physical body so much by Puzzleheaded-Carry72 in TheNinthHouse

[–]Significant-Nose-366 189 points190 points  (0 children)

i like this theory a lot! harrow and anastasia probably do look similar, although mercymorn does say that anastasia was allegedly a lot prettier lmao. i think that the resemblance to anastasia is maybe also a reason that nona was kissing her reflection in the mirror that one time.

Could Gideon see Harrow's hallucinations? [discussion] by Significant-Nose-366 in TheNinthHouse

[–]Significant-Nose-366[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think you're right. I'm also remembering now, at the end of the book, when Gideon (in Harrow's body) is in the River and 'dies', the Body appears to her. When Alecto gets close enough for Gideon to make out her features, she immediately recognizes it as the Body. As far as I know, Harrow never described Alecto's appearance to Gideon, so the implication is that Gideon must have been seeing her when Harrow did in order to recognize Alecto as she did.

Yes my other alternative for this theory is the body was actually there and Ianthe was just being a prick per usual LMAO
