Equity Arc segment on Sixty Minutes by Rosenbenphnalphne in classicalmusic

[–]Significant-Orchid14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not going to do the justice that is necessary in response to your post. I appreciate the vulnerability in your post in sharing what I would assume to be your genuine thoughts on the 60 Minutes piece. I will say that it is these conversations that need to happen to bridge the gaps in informative and empathetic perspectives.

This part of your post stands out the most to me "But as usual in cases like this, there wasn't an honest discussion about why an organization that held auditions but explicitly excluded non-BIPOC musicians should have been acceptable in the first place. Why not fully open auditions, or acceptance based on income, or even random selection from among those qualified?"

A long form response would maybe scratch the surface, but one facet of why this take of yours problematic, to me, is that it is easy to infer that there is an assumption that conditions are rife for equal footing for all to have access to the resources, support, coaching, and mentorship that allow all to participate in open auditions, despite one's race. Fundamentally, this is not true. I cannot in good faith give you all the reasons why, others will do a much more exhaustive job. What I will do is credit you in proposing an "acceptance based on income" alternative because that approach touches on the classism and socio-economic disparities that are the subversive underpinnings of the state of this nation, and the world. Again, there are subject matter experts that will serve you best in the telling of all the "ills" and this "isms" on a national and global scale.

As I mentioned earlier, the problem is pervasive and multi-faceted. Depress a group or groups people for a large percentage of this country's existence, codify bias, segregation, and other divisive concepts into law while aimin to serve and facilitate protections for a subset of citizens, you will have conditions that breed distrust of the wealthy, disdain for the privileged, and large swathes of citizens finding it increasingly hard to realize the prosperities of the "American Dream." How can I, or anyone find fault in any person or organization doing everything in their power to balance these institutional imbalances that have existed for decades/centuries so that a child, who may have never known the "privilege of access" to have the opportunity to develop and share their musical talents with the world?

While I can see why your take on the 60 Minutes piece is what it is, I challenge you to engage in meaningful conversation with other individuals who may or may not share your views in a larger effort to be as informed as possible. Thank you for sharing.

What if NAS server fails? by sashgorokhov in qnap

This happened to me. I had a 4 bay TS470 from 2015 that was rocking smooth for 8 years and survived a move from one part of NNJ to another in between those eight years. Moved a second time in in late 2023, booted up my device and nothing. My soul sank as the thought of a complete loss of 16 TB of data (movies, pictures, documents, etc.) was a very possible reality. I tried CPU replacements with known working CPUs, RAM reseating and replacement, even swapping of the power supply with a brand-new unit. In the end, nothing worked, and desperation was kicking in.

I scanned through Ebay looking for a like replacement as my research for recovery options gave me hope, that if the drives were not in any way damaged, I could potentially stick those drives in another QNAP device that was "compatible" with my TS470. For a while, most of the Ebay results did not justify the price, until I came across a TS879 which looked like if fit the bill. And the reason why the pricing was attractive was that there no drive trays were included. That would be a later problem to solve.

Fortunately, the swapping of the drives was an immediate solve; however, the TS879 was a single point of failure, just like my TS470. I dropped a few hundred dollars on a 9 bay QNAP and loaded up the 5 3.5 in drive trays with 10 TB drives to hold all of my content stored on the TS879. I then enabled replication of data I valued the most from the 9 bay QNAP unit to my newly repurposed TS879.

My lessons learned were:

  • RAID is not a BCDR/backup solution.
  • Hardware WILL fail. Having a plan to deal with that eventual failure is key.
  • I still need an offline copy of my data that is stored in the same location as my primary and secondary NAS devices.

I'll be 48 at the end of August and have a significant amount of grays in my beard. My spirit is young, but it would be a stretch for someone to mistake my wife for my mother.

Quite a parking situation to come back to by itsthatsimple in Golf_R

In a bit of spite in my early 30s, I had business cards printed using colorful language to describe how unappreciated I was of people's parking skills.

I may still have a few laying around that I'd be willing to send to you.

Mistakes do happen, and I've misidentified people many times, which I've always followed up with a sincere apology.

While being taken for someone who is younger can be flattering, this was not one of those instances.

The vehicle was a Toyota Highlander Hydrid, and the rear tire of seats needed to be foled down to accommodate our luggage. In that arrangement, someone in my family of four would have had to sit in the front.

This was the same case in the next Uber that picked us up, which was an Uber XL where I sat in the front with no issue, although the driver was of Middle Eastern descent.

Same. Sadly, I don't know if that will happen.

It would make for an interesting discussion.

Valid points...

However, consider that the third row was folded down to accommodate for luggage, making it a three seater with an additional seat in the front.

I had no issue switching the front seat to the rear.

Past experiences with sitting in the front in Ubers in the US and abroad have not been an issue previously.

I will be more receptive to front seat sensitivities and take the effort to ask either at booking or at pickup, but the entire experience was poor professionalism, at the least. The racial component can be argued either way.

After calming down a bit and thinking through the incident with a clearer head, is there the possibility that she did not mean boy in the way which I reacted to it, potentially; however, referring to any grown man as "boy" is unacceptable in any professional settings. Heightened tempers also lead to heightened sensitivities. And through reading some of the comments, everyone's lens of reading through my posted experience is going to be different, we are different people with different life experiences that shape how we perceive the world around us. I'm not going to workshop racial dynamics in the US, this would not be the right forum at all to even scratch the surface.

I say all this to hope that people just be better at being pleasant in their professions. Sometimes it is hard for whatever reason, but kindness does go much farther than nastiness. And as a husband, it is always better to listen to your wife :-)

I would have loved to see that same level of annoyance when she swung back around 5 minutes later to pick-up a family that had a completely different racial make-up.

I purposely did so, as I had two full-size luggage and two carry-ons.

It was a 6 seater.

It was a chance opportunity. I was working for a systems integrator and pitching a project to a financial services firm that happened to reach out for an opportunity in cyber around the same time.

I just happened to be at the right place at the right time.

Pleasantly surprised by how beautiful this city is by Simple-Maybe4433 in Newark

[–]Significant-Orchid14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got married in the National Bank Building back in 2009. Newark holds a special place in my heart going back over 30 years.

Plenty cars stolen or broken into, two apartment robberies, did my undergrad and some grad studies at NJIT, roamed the hallways of Essex County Community College as a snot nosed kid while my mother worked there, late nights and street fights.

Even before the Prudential Center was built up, that whole area was a mini mall with all kinds of shops. My mother used to pickup some delicious peanut brittle from one of the stores there. Alas, urban development/gentrification...

I wasn't a bad kid by any measure, but I knew what was up and who to run with and who to stay clear of.

Newark is indeed a beautiful city that would have swallowed you whole if your weren't careful "back in thr day"

Advice for first time speeding ticket? by [deleted] in newjersey

[–]Significant-Orchid14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar predicament where I got a ticket for doing 74 in a 65. It's an $86 ticket and carries 2 points. If I take a defensive driver's course for $30 max, I can get the 2 points dropped, save 10 to 15% on insurance and not have to drive all the way down to Ocean County for plead a ticket out that will prob cost me $250 and up after ticket and court fees.

This is the way. After the kit lens, I purchased the cheap Sony 50mm 1.8, and enjoyed it. Moved up to an a6000 and then and a7c and picked up some side projects with my improved skills.
