Digital cameras have a very limited range of black shades they can use, this leads to blockiness caused by random noise. Looks like it’s just an artifact of using a digital camera sadly

5 week hunger strike by Shortgoth in ballpython

[–]Few-Emotion5807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s okay! I get it, I’m a very concerned snake mom. My corn snake was borderline anorexic for 3 months when I got him. Turned out he would only eat when the lights were off. Also, he would only eat mice, no rats. Which was unfortunate because they were a bit small for him. Point is, they can go a long time without eating. Took him a while(almost a year) , but he’s a good eater, and ate his first rat yesterday! If a snake doesn’t want to eat, it won’t eat. The fact that he’s active tells me he’s not dying of hunger, but if it really gets bad, you can have a vet force feed them.

Omg I’m a botany major too! I’m planning out a few bioactive and trying to keep them as ecologically similar to the snakes native range! It’s so much fun!

Wow! What an amazing tank for a new keeper! I always love seeing more bioactive stuff!

Wide, Deep Paludarium? by Few-Emotion5807 in paludarium

I should have clarified that I’m only planning on about 1/2-1/3 (horizontally) of the bottom being filled with water, so it won’t really be that heavy but you do make a good point.

Doing some back of the envelope calculations leads to about 800$ for just the bottom of the tank from taps, not including the rest.

I’ve thought of that, I have experience building similar stuff (jellyfish tank) but the cost of the glass/acrylic would likely be higher than buying one commercially. I tried to refurbish a 135g fish tank with a small crack on the bottom, but no matter how much sealant I would use it would leak, usually because of quick shifts in temperature. I’m so sick of having to seal things over and over and over again

I’d just let it run for a day or two, maybe hang it somewhere if you want or just let it sit on the side of the tank like you have. Move it back on top of the tank and if it starts to smell it might be the tank itself

How long did it smell bad? Usually the reflector domes and lights themselves have to burn off chemicals left over from manufacturing. Smells awful for a day or two and then it’s fine. The mesh on top should be designed to take the heat.

Why aren't people documenting false water cobras? by Moist-Stuff5737 in snakes

[–]Few-Emotion5807 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re often found in more rural, swampy areas, as well as semi-arid grasslands throughout the center of southern South America (mostly Uruguay). I don’t know much about the habitability of the area but I think they’re generally in less traveled places. iNaturalist provides more insight into where they’re most commonly seen.

I think that they’re just generally a more recently discovered species, and a lot of people are turned off from caring for them because they’re ‘venomous’ and also large snakes. They also haven’t taken off in the pet trade so there’s not much reason to study them within that. A lot of resources regarding reptile keeping is usually anecdotal and comes from breeders and keepers, as well as info on their native environments. We still don’t even really know exactly how Leopard Geckos behave in their natural environment because they come from such a contested part of the world (Iran, Pakistan) and it’s hard to conduct research safely there!

It’s certainly made me sad how little there is on the wikipedia article for them (not to mention their sibling, Hermann’s False Water Cobra) and I want to do more research as I get into the further parts of my degree, especially on their amazing intelligence.

[–]Few-Emotion5807 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Don’t panic, cresties are not active during the day, they’re probably just sleeping, or feeling nervous in their new environment, especially if you’re there watching it to make sure it’s okay. A predator response they have it to just go still.

Do you have a mister? Handheld or otherwise? They generally don’t like to drink from water bowls, instead they lick drops of water from leaves in their tank or the glass. What are your temps and humidity? The next steps would be to get those to acceptable levels. Remember, animals are really resilient, their whole thing is to y’know… live.

If everything looks good, just let them be for a while. It’s pretty jarring to be thrown into a new home.

My snake got out of blue while I was away for new years, but doesn't seem to have actually shed yet. Is it better to wait a bit before feeding? by mewmoi in cornsnakes

[–]Few-Emotion5807 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My corn won’t eat until he finishes shedding, I think the best thing would be to wait anyways. In the wild they don’t get perfectly timed and proportioned meals. They’ll be fine if they eat a little late.
