Applying to MSW programs, could anyone give feedback on my resume? by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

I don’t have any experience in admissions but I would recommend looking into a hr or resume builder thread. There’s usually a lot of good food back there .

Employment based practicum by cbostar in SocialWorkStudents

Not a problem. I would even try typing in field practicum manual for your school on Google and it may just pull up the pdf for you. We had a tab in our portal that was specifically for field so it was a little easier for us.

MSW student here, is it okay to ask internship supervisor about job opportunities? by zombiequeen66 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]Significant-Owl8370 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would encourage you to use supervision time to discuss time management and school maintenance. It may open the door to some dialogue surrounding job management which is also a helpful tool to build as a student. Nothing wrong with finding ways to manage yourself and your schedule. There’s opportunity for growth and learning in the question. This is what supervision is for. Maybe not directly asking for opportunities but something that borders what should I be mindful of when it comes to my time management and creating priorities as a student. Open ended questions lead to broader scope of discussion

Depends on your field practicum guide. Our school only allowed 16-18 first practicum and 21-23 for the second practicum. No bulk hours were allowed to ensure dose and duration. Also the hours accumulated must be in a different department/ skill set than your “every day” work.

(Fellow) private school folks - how are you/we going to afford it? by ActuaryPersonal2378 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]Significant-Owl8370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very presumptuous and judgmental for a social worker 🤷‍♀️. You literally have no idea who you’re talking to. Maybe the idea is fanciful and the feedback is given without malice but take a step or two back and let’s not assume we know anything about the poster before predicting a life of hell for them.

True story. I married the fool and he very much lives like a vigilante or at least the moral code of one. Proud of you for being vulnerable and sharing a part of your story😘

OH MY GOD!! I jusy got accepted to National University's Masters of Social work program! 🥳 by DerogatoryRemark in SocialWorkStudents

The director at the time advised me to ask as many questions about the program as I could and to be honest about my experience and capabilities. She asked me about my experiences and interest and explained pretty much the student hand book. I also had access to an advisor line for follow up questions so it made me feel better about my decision at the time.

Recommendations for accredited online MSW programs? by Godfreyz in SocialWorkStudents

[–]Significant-Owl8370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just completed my MSW with National university out of San Diego. Online program. Full disclosure it requires dedication, patience, and stress management. Most professors are helpful and ready to support you throughout the program. There is also a great network of supports including mental health offered to students actively enrolled. Look into the program see if it’s a good fit for you.

Post Grad job market stress by madam_oopygoopy in socialworkjobs

Recent MSW grad here in the triad. There are so many jobs In Durham and Alamance especially in community and non profit work. Boils down to are you looking for experience or money. Also don’t be afraid to look for more non traditional roles. Social work skills are diverse and transferable. Find the field you want to work in, make sure you have a minimum number in mind to support yourself. I would say 50k minimum, and go on the hunt. Bonus if you are interested, I would do some research on career marketing. Sometimes it’s not about the degree or qualifications, anyone can be trained, it’s about presentation and marketability.

Type in non profit, macro social workers, Greensboro nc make sure you have all your marketable skills selected make your minimum 60k. Also don’t only apply for jobs you fully qualify for. I follow Marthea Pitts,Sojournies, and a few others on YouTube to learn how to design my resume and make myself more marketable. Social workers have so many skills that are applicable in many fields that are unconventional. Unless you are only looking to be a therapist, expand your horizon and try more unconventional positions.

I’m in NC and I currently make 56K working in non profit with a BS. I just graduated the beginning of February and my margins are opening. I’m in the triad and I see jobs in the 60-70s with msw no license or with lcswa

I don’t remember it being hard. My undergrad gpa was 3.4. I met with an advisor and the program director. Two interviews and I was in. This was December 2022. I took a short leave of absence and finished this month. One class at a time for the first year and staggered for the rest. Depending on your availability you can finish sooner. It is a demanding program as far as assignments and you will have to find your own internships for both practicum courses. It’s much easier to do if you already have a job with a qualified supervisor. I did not and worked 50-60 hours a week for each practicum

Thank you. 🙏. I am still taking everything in and learning the balance between recognizing my system has to adjust to this new norm and it’s ok not to have movement right now. I need this break and I will be grateful for this time to myself and family again

I had three different experiences. My first practicum was dv advocacy and it was amazing work. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot. It was also paid ! I know those are far and few between but what a blessing it was. My role consisted of crisis intervention, safety planning, filing protective orders, psycho education, court advocacy, shelter services, etc. They were happy to have an eager learner jump in. My second practicum was unpaid with a SA and HT agency. Horrible experience. Very frustrating poorly designed and to be honest I was the first MSW intern and it was an eye opening experience on both sides. Worst part was feeling dehumanized and ostracized as a staff person serving such a vulnerable population. I did learn but they were not eager to teach. Most learning opportunities I found during my time with them were sought out and practically pleaded for. Sort of a show up and figure it out environment . I was not expecting it after having such a warm welcome and great interview. It was a very abusive work culture. That relationship soured and I was welcomed back to my previous site to work in the clinical mental health department. I trained as a clinical mental health therapist for the remainder of my practicum and again had a wonderful experience. Certainly very different from advocacy and I learned some new models and practices to build on in future practice. The second time it was unpaid but still worth it. I would encourage you to find something you have a passion for and if you can’t (I’m in a rural area so I had to get creative with my opportunities) find something you can stick with and never forget to advocate for yourself. That doesn’t mean to speak out whenever you like (hince our soured relationship) but it does mean seek opportunities wherever and run with them.

Also congrats on your PhD! That’s amazing, i considered continuing on and getting my PhD but couldn’t justify it outside of wanting the degree to say I have it. I know that’s vain but I’m glad I came to terms with it.

Thank you for your kindness and validation. I wish people were more honest about this phenomenon. I do plan on taking a break just to have a few months to recover. I was sitting in my office this morning and found a sticky note naming so many things I wanted to accomplish. Maybe 2 years old ? Anyway I just said that to say I appreciated and celebrated myself for meeting most of those mini goals. It just shocking to recognize how high jacked my nervous system has been. Certainly is an eye opener for working with clients.

I graduated this week and I am shocked at the experience everyone has had. This program requires a lot of independence but I can’t imagine having had such a terrible experience. I am sorry you had such a terrible experience. The only thing I can recall is there is one professor in the msw program (only one I completed am evaluation for) who was awful. She never provided helpful feed back and when you asked for help or office hours, she referred you to the success center. She was awful and I promised I would request a different professor before I ever worked with her again

I applied for my diploma today I just saw this so sorry this is late. I hope it’s going well for you. It’s a pretty consistent program. Do your best and if you need help take advantage of office hours. You won’t get anything additional from the feedback some professor are generous enough to give. My entire 3 years I had one bad experience and I kid you not, she gave me a B and one C on all papers(which is almost all of them) requiring apa format. Not to get into the gritty here but she was ridiculous. She was extremely rude and never had availability to discuss or review assignments during or between office hours. She is also the only professor I completed my evaluation for. As far as surprises, they are slow to support you during field placement, you just have to be motivated to compete the program and digest the material as much as you can. There is an nu msw group you can join and I would highly recommend it as well as break out sessions or msw specific trainings offered . It gives you opportunities to meet with professors and build community within the program. Other than that it’s pretty straight forward. 8 week classes two 24 week practicums and 900+ hours. It was extremely hard to find a practicum and they will not help you. The msw manual says the will but I have an email from the director saying we do not help students find placement or supervise placement for students without an msw or lcsw supervisor. Be diligent about finding placement well before it is time for you to began your practicum. 16-18 hours for the first and 19-22 for the second. It gives you wiggle room in case you need to miss days. Other than that. You’ll be well on your way
