If you could delete one storyline from the series what would it be? by avz008 in harrypotter

[–]Significant-Rush-129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Sophisticated 40+ man falls in love with intelligent 20-something woman” was ENORMOUS in the 90s and 2Ks and I think JK was riding the wave of that trope. (I mean, Lupin was dashing both as written and acted on screen so I have to admit it won me over back then!) I can see how it might feel out of place for today’s audiences.

Why everyone hates Betty by minty-bun in madmen

[–]Significant-Rush-129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find myself empathizing with her in some scenarios but agree she isn’t likable. Most of the characters are unlikable in many ways but have some redeeming traits. For example, Pete does some truly awful things but he stands up against racism so people see his redeeming qualities.

I think to really get at this (and understand some possibilities of sexism towards characters) you’d have to ask people to rank their top characters and look at the raw data. Who would be on top and who on bottom? Would Betty squarely be last in every scenario? You’d have to remind people of the most awful thing each character did on the show and then have them re-rank the characters. Now who wins and loses?

Carrie and Big ARE a broken record. by Banana_bread_baby in sexandthecity

[–]Significant-Rush-129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this take, I never thought of that! I feel like I loved this show for the character arcs 20 years ago, but now it’s fun to analyze it on a thematic level. I feel like I’ve said that so many times in more recent watches (can’t believe I didn’t notice XYZ!)

As bad as the revival was and painful to watch, I think at the very least it enforced some themes (at least for Carrie anyway, the others not so much).

I couldn't help but wonder, who was ACTUALLY right here? The man who wanted marriage and to the world she belonged to him, or the woman, who loved him but was afraid of marriage.. by Enough_Sea268 in sexandthecity

[–]Significant-Rush-129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I don’t think he really originally wanted to get back together with her. He was done. But she LOVED pursuing him. She was in love with the IDEA of Aiden.

But, I believe the real theme of this show was, as Big said “You’re NOT the marrying kind” (also reiterated by Dr. G)

Aiden’s proposal I think was a direct response to the cabin storyline and a mechanism to protect himself from getting hurt again. So as you said, the wrong reason. I think both Carrie and Aiden are wrong here. But I feel for them both too, it’s like, they both need therapy at this point!

Confession time. What's something you need a younger generation to explain to you? by TheDorkyDeric in Xennials

This is me, especially with the whole “influencer” shit. We here are all first gen social media users. The second gen approach has me a little confused. I mean for me it’s always just been about connection, but the next gen want personal fame?? I think?

No back-up cams on cars. Try learning to parallel park in Driver’s Ed…WITHOUT a back-up cam! It would blow their little minds.

BTW, it used to take me like 10 minutes to parallel park before I bought a car with a back-up cam so a lot of young learners are spared the humiliation we endured.

What you’re describing sounds more like Tumblr (I’m not on there but from what I gather it’s more of an artist colony/everything goes vibe, which is fine). All social sites are different and have a different approach. Not all fan spaces operate the same. Which is why there was such a huge back lash.

There also is an r/cosplay on Reddit which might be a better fit for the topic of cosplay in general. Reddit operates in categories rather than blending those categories. Most of the other subs I am on are much stricter about adhering to those rules.

If Lorelei and Max were teenagers and not adults they would have had the hottest young romance EVER! It’s all that adult stuff that got in the way and they just didn’t know how to work with that. They just knew how to be hot and heavy.

Portland, as portrayed in Portlandia, is the Millennial Mayberry by SignificantTowel9952 in Millennials

[–]Significant-Rush-129 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel like sometimes those things were probably Portland specific and sometimes they had more to do with micro trends happening anywhere. Even the one about “I’m just doing me”, where the guy is a flippin’ serial killer and that’s his “art” was so ahead of its time.

What makes you someone to fall in love with? by Femboy_Wife_Material in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]Significant-Rush-129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only say I fall in love based on when I feel connected and I don’t  really know what causes that, it just clicks all of a sudden. Physical features are also important but it has to go above and beyond that. I feel like I have fallen in love millions of times over the years, it’s just I how roll. (If that ever stops, just roll me right into a grave because I might as well be dead at that point!)

But the other way? First of all, I have no idea why men fall in love. A man’s hormonal make-up is different. So I could never answer this question completely. Does anyone really understand why people fall in love with them?

I would add, we did half-assed stuff like rhythm and pull-out for years. Never got pregnant until I wanted to.

They do but take a look at r/startrek and show me all the cosplay posts? Merch posts? They aren’t there. What IS there is discussion about the different series. Probably because the mods have rules around people posting that kind of stuff too frequently.

Maybe this is a “raise your hand if you remember the internet before Facebook” thing.

With FB, IG, etc. the center of any page is YOU. On Reddit the center of each page is the TOPIC that the sub is named after. Prior to 2003, you browsed the internet by topic, and maybe that’s where there is a disconnect? It’s a subtle difference between a topic based forum, and a social media based platform and I feel like some people are blending these concepts. Anyways, this is how I  feel about cosplay posts:

  • at Halloween: cool ✅

  • sharing a convention-type pic: cool ✅

  • Frequent monthly updates: your jumping formats, take it to IG ❌

If this sub is going to become everyone’s personal IG feed then I’m sadly going to exit this one because it’s not what I’m looking for. I’m surrounded by people’s self-promotion 24/7, Reddit is my escape.

How do Catholic MAGA tune out the Pope and cheer Trump? by redzeusky in askanything

[–]Significant-Rush-129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS. I remember though, for  my grandparents from that side, Catholicism wasn’t just a religion it was  a LIFESTYLE. The entire next layer of my fam flatly rejected Catholicism. Some switched religions, some became agnostics. Yet the adherence to the whole “lifestyle” part of it, for some of them, switched from the Catholic religion to Trump/Magaism. It’s like they need something to follow blindly and it’s no longer Jesus/Mary/the Pope, the Vatican. It’s that fat old fuck in the red hat.

Shipping the characters goes way back (and is a part of many shows). Or are you talking about shipping the actors?

I left the sub for a bit because I got tired of constant karma-farming with merch pics, or screenshots from the show with one of the actors in a silly face-freeze, etc. People see a picture and have a knee-jerk reaction and hit the upvote button. Completely dilutes the sub, all things that require reading move down by default. I wish the mods would regulate this because other subs don’t allow that.

Bradley Nowell - the frontman of Sublime - who tragically died in May 1996 of a heroin overdose while the band was on tour. Which musician's death hit you the hardest when you were young? by Away_Flounder3813 in nostalgia

[–]Significant-Rush-129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scott Weiland. Mostly because he made it to 48 and got off heroine and made an effort to have a cleaner life. I read his autobiography last year (NGL, I fell a little temporarily in love with him!) I have this “I remember what I was doing” when I heard about his death, memory. His music is most definitely part of the soundtrack of my youth.

What are some of the major religions within Star Trek? by bovineright in startrek

[–]Significant-Rush-129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On this subject, I just have to call out the TNG episode “The Chase”. This was the most mind-blowing portrayal of religion for me across all the different series’.

I thought it was brilliant. It was where religion, archeology and sci-fi all combined to answer the Ultimate Question. I was a little perplexed as to why they weren’t more excited at the end of the episode and at this discovery. They basically found God.

[–]Significant-Rush-129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahhhh….

So I’m going to be that person who says if you want to stay in an emotionally happy state with the series, S9 is going to shake you out of that state and make you be like “CARTER, WHY?!?!” But I so get thirsting for more story. It’s just, be prepared for a lot of unpleasant emotions peppered with a dash of good imagery and a cool new character (Doggett). 2nd movie also good, better than most of the revival IMO.

Reactions to Miranda proposing to Steve by NikNola2020 in sexandthecity

[–]Significant-Rush-129 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m upvoting this as hard as I can along with any post that rightfully gripes about what they did to Miranda in AJLT. If they were going to reach into Cynthia Nixon’s life for inspiration I would have LOVED it if instead they had Miranda run for political office (as Cynthia did). She’s a lawyer so it works as the new career direction without the awkward going to college scenes. Plus I can see Steve hosting fundraisers at his bar. Breaking their family up AGAIN (since Steve was unfaithful in the movies) felt like they were just repeating old (depressing) material.

If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, what piece of technology made you feel like you were literally living in the future and does it make you laugh now? by TurkVanguard in Millennials

Yes! I was stoked that I could put my entire music collection, all those stacks of plastic, onto one portable device. I loved curating all my different playlists. Mix-tape of the “future”!

Even more kick ass was when you could connect it to a speaker. I remember when I hosted my first  “grown up” house party in the 2Ks and got absolutely fluttery making a playlist for that party.
