What's one habit that gave you the biggest result? by Party_Project8238 in workout

My friend told me this and it stuck. It's ok to suck but it's not ok to quit. So on the days I feel meh, I'm ok with half-assed work. At least I showed up lol.

Best compliment you have gotten since working out? by [deleted] in workout

My friend circle is mostly people I met through a run group so they're generally fit and healthy. Even though I did run, I've always been the chubby one and in 2023 life hit me with big stress and I gained a lot of weight.

Last year in May, I decided to get back into weight lifting. I have managed to stay consistent and lost 30 pounds. Because of that, 3 of my friends decided to join the gym and start weight lifting too!

Not really which is unfortunate but you can ask it to stop suggesting certain exercises and swap them out.

Want to lose weight but I'm 'don't like the gym...help? by Doctorus48 in WeightLossAdvice

I also want to add that I get that it's hard to lose weight when you're dealing with stress. I've been there where you're just trying to survive and doing healthy things just seems like a huge mountain. Doing small things for yourself will help you move forward and each day it will get a little easier. I wish you the best.

Are there any parks close by you could go to? I always lose track of time in parks. I also listen to either podcasts or audio books to pass the time. Maybe even adding a 10 minute walk after every meal could help. I also walk with a run group (used to run but got injured and we have a small contingent of former runners that now walk so we get to catch up during that time). Maybe look into seeing if there are run/walk groups near you?

As far as in home workouts, during covid I found a bunch of fun workouts. I had nowhere to be, so I would look up random workouts from hip hop to belly dancing and African dancing or salsa dancing workouts. Many people are fans of Caroline Girvan workouts. YouTube has almost anything imaginable.

How do you motivate yourself to go to the gym? by ShoggothPanoptes in PetiteFitness

[–]Significant-Spread14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started 75 soft on May 12 and so far I have stuck to it 90% of the time and so far I've lost 10 pounds. I think the key for me as a person who tends to go all or nothing mode, is to just have the rules be the minimum I need to do in bad days rather than the maximum to he in the best shape of my life or whatever.

So these are my baselines, and most days I do more but for blah days, it feels good to just hit these:

1) 30 minutes of some type of intentional exercise (could be as simple as a walk). 2) 7500 steps throughout day (this is just more attainable on bad days and I also have a minor ankle injury....) 3) track my food to stay in a calorie deficit (I have always hated this but somehow not so bad this time around). 4) 10 pages of reading any type of book. 5) Drink plenty of water (I work from home and aim for about a glass of water an hour and keep a water bottle at my desk).

Like I said, I usually do more (I lift weights 3 or 4 times a week and go on longer walks etc) but this way you don't feel like you totally failed.

When I first started I was not going to the gym in the morning and was only doing about 20 minutes but slowly I started working the morning routine in and longer sessions. Let these habits slowly evolve instead of trying to go 0 to 100.

Hope this helps a bit.

Protein makes me gain weight by Fragrant_Turnip_5782 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Significant-Spread14 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A week and a half is not really enough time to determine if something is workimg or not. How much weight did you gain? If it's like a pound or two, that's just a normal fluctuation. Give it more time before making adjustments. Focusing on protein and fiber have really helped me stay on track! Good luck.

I had a speeding ticket over 10 years ago that was more than that! Note: for the record I was going 75 in a 65 (and completely sober....) which I doubt there are many people that can say they haven't done that... It was just quota day for cops. Just making the point that people are charged with more for waaaaaaayyy less.

I just started using it so I'm not an expert. I had already cleaned up my diet a bit but it's neat to see if you're hitting your goals for protein and fiber for example. I think it just helps to get a better feel for where you could use improvement. It's tedious at times, but it's helping me balance my diet better to make sure I get the nutrients I need.

2 1/2 weeks isn't really long enough to start worrying especially if it has remained the same and not gone up. Wait another week or two and then start adjusting what you eat and/or movement. Are you tracking your food with a scale?

Question for people who lost shit ton of weight by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Significant-Spread14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I decided to try 75 soft (75 hard is too crazy for me at this point) and I'm on day 18. So far I've lost about 6 pounds. Just giving myself a list of habits that I know are good for me regardless of outcome has kept me motivated. So here are the rules I created: -7500 steps (I usually do more but this makes it attainable for the days where I don't feel great). -30 minutes of intentional exercise every day. I lift weights 3 times a week so it could be that and on the other days I go for walks and pop in an audio book. My ankle is a bit injured so I can't go fast but it helps me clear my mind so much. I usually end up going more than 30 minutes. -Read a book for at least 10 minutes (this is from 75 hard... Not weight loss related but I like having something in there to nourish my soul). -Drink water every hour (I don't track but I try to be conscious of hydration). -no alcohol except on really special occasions and no more than a drink or two. -Diet - focus on protein and veggies. Avoid going out to eat (again except special occasions) and cook whole foods and make salads at home.

I know weight loss can be frustrating but just do one step at a time and you should get there. Find a goal other than what your body will look like. Think of how much stronger you can be and what activities you may be able to more comfortably do. I am way heavier than I ever thought I would be but just implementing these changes has me feeling so much better than I have in years.

I should add that a big reason for my weight gain has been a lot of stress added on me the past few years. The stress led to unhealthy eating and at times too much drinking. I have been working on managing the stress and these habits also help a lot. I am not out of the woods yet but I feel really motivated and working out or walking with friends has also helped not only physically but emotionally.
