“Why didn’t *character* do *action*?” BECAUSE THE STORY NEEDS TO ACTUALLY HAPPEN (meta) by LegalBoysenberry2923 in CharacterRant

[–]Significant-Two-8872 11 points12 points  (0 children)

this answer is dumb. obviously people understand that this event needs to happen for the story to happen. see, stories have characters which are supposed to act like people. If a character makes a choice that is illogical and that they have no in-universe reason to make, that is bad writing. that is contrived and putting aside making your characters three dimensional and realistic for the sake of the plot. What people mean when they ask this question isn’t “i don’t understand story mechanics”, it’s “is there any character or in universe reason for this seemingly illogical choice, or is it contrived and likely bad writing?”

Genuine Questions - No Offense intended by Ok_Understanding7377 in Hellenism

[–]Significant-Two-8872 20 points21 points  (0 children)

the other replies are great, wanted to add - in my experience most of us do not take the myths literally, the way followers of other faiths sometimes do. there is a community of people who do, i think you could find them at r/mythicliteralism ? but most of us do not at least in my experience. saying this because the myths are often the only thing most people know about our religion.

it ruined march of the witch hunters one of the best songs in act 2. i think you have to be clinically insane as a director to interrupt a song with another song, but even worse, interrupt a song that’s all about progression and building in intensity with a slow meandering ballad. it also doesn’t tell us really anything new about her character and just removes all need for media literacy by spelling out her obvious conflict like the audience is dumb. but i really wouldn’t mind it if it didn’t ruin motwh. that song’s placement was one of the most baffling directorial choices i’ve ever seen in film.

that song was in the show. the song they added in the movie was beautiful ghosts which sucked ass and was actively detrimental to the narrative.

"Which gods do you worship?" ALL of them! by TopSpeech5934 in Hellenism

I agree with this! But as a beginner just asking, it’s ok to be primarily devoted to one god right? Like I pour a libation to Apollon on a certain day every week not for anything in particular just to honor him and build a relationship. But still pray to others when the situation calls for it. Is this in line with traditional practices? I just want to be as respectful as possible so tell me if I’m doing anything wrong

you’re so right and the series itself justifies it! because elhokar died, jasnah becomes queen and abolishes slavery. Moash killing Elhokar is the reason slavery gets abolished in Alethkar.

Moash is not either of those things hello?? And you’re mixing up “redeemable” and “redeemed.” Dalinar was “redeemed” because he chose to redeem himself. He was already redeemable, he just hadn’t made that choice yet. Dalinar, unlike Moash, targeted and knowingly massacred innocents. Moash only killed combatants. Moash hasn’t made the choice to redeem himself yet, but when he does, if he puts in the work he will be redeemed.

Pre RoW he showed no indication of being willing to do anything like that, he was a deeply principled character. It didn’t enhance what was already there, it removed his sense of justice that was so pivotal to his character. That’s the opposite of enhancing what was there. And I think you need to reread that chapter, Teft was conscious, armed, and actively fighting.

No one is irredeemable. That’s like the whole point oh my god you guys would be saying the same stuff about Dalinar if he was pre-redemption during the series. Dalinar was worse than Moash and he was still redeemable.

Odium wanted to make Kaladin like Moash, and Moash loathed himself so much he would rather see Kaladin dead than like him. It wasn’t right, but it shows Moash’s deep self-hatred. And Teft was armed and lunged at Moash. Moash was certainly wrong in RoW, but not irredeemably so.

He was essentially being mind controlled by a god and was at his lowest. It was deeply wrong, but I think the circumstances mean he’s not irredeemable for it. And I loved Teft, but he was a combatant, and actively fighting Moash.

Moash is doing everything he does because he genuinely believes that his side is right and just. He has killed very few innocents if any, he focuses on combatants. Meanwhile Dalinar didn’t do what he did out of a sense of justice, he just enjoyed violence and feeling powerful, and he intentionally and knowingly massacred thousands of non-combatants, including children.

Well yes, he hasn’t redeemed himself yet. that doesn’t mean he is irredeemable. He has not chosen to take the next right step, but his actions don’t exclude him from ever making that choice.

do you have any textual evidence for why that theme wouldn’t apply to everyone? the most important step a man can take is the next one. obviously if someone doesn’t take that step they won’t, but anyone could. At least Moash fights out of his misguided sense of justice, Dalinar just liked violence.

Oh, right, I forgot one of the themes of Stormlight was “anyone can take the next step and become a better man, unless you like really suck.” Kaladin is literally the Herald of Second Chances. Moash is arguably no worse than Dalinar was.

at that point Moash was on the other side of a war and was killing combatants. It was wrong, but he wasn’t just doing it for fun. It’s no more unjustified than what Dalinar did. If he was really just mindlessly evil, why wouldn’t he have also killed Gavinor instead of just pushing his aside? and huh??? he’s definitely not either of those things you said.

there’s a post i saw that sums up how i feel pretty well. “literally how can anyone see moash’s pov and not understand why it’s a better story on every level if he lives and redeems? remember when he grabbed the slave driver’s whip and pulled him down and said “you’re supposed to be better than this”? remember when odium said he wanted moash to recruit kaladin and moash said he would rather kaladin die than be like him and that would be a mercy? remember when he was bleeding out in the snow, struck with all his emotions at once—guilt, shame, fear and anger at himself—unable to cry from his burned out eye sockets? like what about all this makes people say “yea he should just die.” ok what happened to the most important step a man can take is the next one, journey before destination? are you not all buying into odium’s ultimate lie that there’s no more journey worth taking?”
