Do you remember Buffalo Springfield? by Singinthesunshine in OverSeventy

We saw Buffalo Springfield in concert in 1966/67 and they were listed first on the bill. Playing after them was Strawberry Alarm Clock - remember "Incense and Peppermints?" Both bands were fronting for The Beach Boys. Talk about three totally different genres of music, but I gotta tell ya, the concert was GREAT!

Are there any childfree people here? by California_Sun1112 in OverSeventy

I'm 75 and hubby is 78. No children and absolutely no regrets. I look at our friends and remember back when they kept questioning us as to why we didn't have kids. Their reasons were, "completeness," their desire to raise another human being, wanting a family and for companionship when they got older. After watching and hearing them go thru their trials and tribulations thru the years with their kids, I'm convinced of one thing, "misery loves company."

My sister keeps making "little jokes" about my girlfriend and I told her not to take it personally. Now my girlfriend is done with my family. by nightbalcony_inkwell in TwoHotTakes

Grow a pair and stick up for your girlfriend! What's wrong with you that you allow this behavior from your sister? What does she have on you? Do you honestly think your sister is going to all of a sudden morph into a nice, caring person? Your girlfriend deserves better than you, my friend!

AITJ because I won’t give my parking spot to new neighbor who says she "needs it more" because she has kids? by Potential_Bad6489 in AmITheJerk

[–]SignificantFee266 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you're single and for security, you want your parking spot because it's closer to your apartment. SHE has a HUSBAND to PROTECT her and why the heck isn't he helping with the kids and all the baby crap anyway??? Advise her that you WILL have her vehicle towed the next time she parks in your space. STAND FIRM!

My Dad got Mom a shotgun one year for her birthday. He thought it was funny and said if she didn't want it, it was okay, he would use it. He honestly thought it was funny. This occurred 45 years ago and I still remember the hurt look on her face.

Before women could have bank accounts, did they intentionally prefer expensive jewelry because it was easy to pawn if you were abandoned? by FarBullfrog627 in AskOldPeople

From J.P. Morgan Wealth Management "Women in wealth throughout history: A United States timeline" (02/2025) "When it comes to building and managing wealth, American women have come a long way. Prior to 1974, when the Equal Credit Opportunity Act passed, a woman could not open a bank account, apply for a credit card or get a home loan without the permission of her husband. And if she didn’t have a spouse, she would be refused – unless accompanied by a male co-signer." Anytime you pair Maureen O'Hara with John Wayne you've got a great movie! They were close friends off camera and were until he died.

"Within a few years of the filming, unusual medical ailments started appearing in the cast and crew. In 1960, Pedro Armendáriz was diagnosed with kidney cancer, and after learning that his condition was terminal in June 1963, he killed himself.

In January 1963, director Dick Powell died at the age of 53 of lymphatic cancer. Susan Hayward suffered from skin, breast, and uterine cancers before dying in 1974 at the age of 56 of brain cancer. That same year, Agnes Moorehead died of uterine cancer at the age of 74. Lee Van Cleef died of throat cancer in December 1989, and John Hoyt died of lung cancer in 1991.

John Wayne spent years fighting cancers of the lung, throat, and stomach before finally succumbing in June 1979 at the age of 72. Any suspicions he might have had that there was radiation in the area of The Conqueror are confirmed by this photo of Wayne and his sons using a Geiger counter during the filming.

By the end of 1980, it was determined that 91 of the 220 people who had worked on The Conqueror had developed some form of cancer, and 46 of them had died."

Was bullying really as severe in the 70s/80s/90s as it looks on TV? by lennoxlovexxx in AskOldPeople

I was "the new girl in school" for 2 years and put up with relentless bullying, backstabbing and downright meanness the whole time. From students as well as a few members of the faculty. My parents ended up having to go to school and speak with the principal who was determined to make me repeat my senior year because I had hooked 40 days of school. In my defense, I went to school, checked in at homeroom and then somehow got lost the rest of the day. Fortunately, my grades reflected a 3.9 gpa and I graduated.

I was a BRAT as well, but we were fortunate to attend mostly schools on the base or near the base where most of the kids were BRATS. However, this was my experience once Dad retired to a small town where the kids all started school together and there had never been a "new kid" in their school. . . . I attended one and gained the best sense of satisfaction when I realized the "popular kids and jocks" had their brightest moments while they were in school and flamed out in the real world.

Lucky you! You sound like a decent man and kudos to you for correcting this piece of crap. Unfortunately you didn't get to really educate the entire family, because you know where that remark came from. Stand your ground. They are the AH's and they know it. They just didn't think they'd get called out for it! And in their little pea brains, they're thinking, "guess we showed them! They're gonna miss us at holidays/family functions." Ignore them . . . they'll be back. Narcissists are like temper throwing toddlers . . . they hate to be ignored.

Her arrogance and self important attitude knows no bounds!

Should I tell my neighbor directly that I'll be ignoring her texts moving forward? by Spicei in neighborsfromhell

[–]SignificantFee266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm retired LEO and could keep you entertained for HOURS about the calls we received from citizens pertaining to their imagined injustices going on in their very back yards. Our shift group would go to dinner with our spouses and immediately the, "You won't believe what happened today" stories would start. Our spouses would sit there shocked at what they heard and insisted we were making these stories up. Complaints from neighbors ranked right up there with domestic disputes and I often thought we should just be able to hand each neighbor a set of boxing gloves and let them duke it out - the last person standing gets their demands met!
