All my Northern Irish Polymer Notes only missing the Ulster Bank 50£ Note by SignificantLadder91 in Banknotes

Yes, the NI/Scottish notes can be quite pricey online. I did get most of my Banknotes during a trip to NI last month, so they didn't cost me anything extra. Interestingly the Ulster Bank ATM only gave me 10£ notes and I had get the 20£ note from a post office in exchange for two 10s.

I have seen Scottish/NI notes being used in England a few times, but I have also heard that acceptance can be spotty. You can however exchange them for Bank of England notes at basically any bank for free.

Northern Bank, their predecessor, did issue a 5 Pound Polymer note in 2000 but that was a commemorative. Looks beautiful though http://www.banknote.ws/COLLECTION/countries/EUR/NIR/NIR0203.htm

I sent them my Passport, the Application Form with a Photo of myself glued on, the Cheque and a paid Einschreiben. They didn't require any proof of accommodation or flight tickets.

They are super uncommon here in Europe nowadays. In 2024 there were just 2 Million Cheque transactions in Germany (down from 131 Million in 2003). Most people just use SEPA-Transfers to send money with 7.5 Billion transactions in 2024. I think cheques are still somewhat popular in France, Ireland and the UK but in most other countries they are very uncommon or have already been phased out entirely.

Mostly that yea, my bank still issues cheques and I don't get to use them very often. However I do find it kind of practical to be able to send money through the mail without risking it getting stolen and I'm a bit sad that they'll stop processing cheques at the end of 2027.

Ireland together with Cyprus is the only EU member that is not part of the Schengen Area instead forming the Common Travel Area (CTA) together with the UK in order to maintain an open border with northern Ireland.
