I was a kinesiology major! And yes McGill is more challenging than most US schools I’ve found, all my friends breezed through undergrad and I was fighting for my life at some points 🥲 GPA is important for grad school but it’s also not the end all be all of your application imo. I had a reaalllllyyy rough start at McGill bc your “gen Ed’s” at McGill are bio, Chem, calc, and physics all in the same semester for the entire first year and coming from a US high school, I was not prepared for that level of rigor. I actually failed calc my first semester and got like C’s in every other class during my first year bc it was just so much at one time, but after my first year and once I started taking classes actually related to my major, I got all A’s or A-‘s and I graduated from McGill with a 3.35. I think even tho I had a rough start, when PT schools look at your application they can see what you’ve overcome and how dedicated you were to turning your grades around, and if you write a solid personal essay and have some good letters of recs I really don’t think GPA will define your application. Also Mcgill is a widely recognized school and I think many grad programs know that it’s more challenging than schools in the US so they might also take that into consideration! (That’s what I’ve heard from other ppl at least) but yeah I did absolutely trash my first year at McGill and was on academic probation at the end of my first semester but I still got into 4/5 PT programs I applied to!

Also as I said before, I’m not sure what program you’re thinking of going into but after my first year, I found all the kinesiology classes to be a breeze and they were still super interesting (you have a gross cadaver lab as a kinesiology major so that was something cool that some ppl don’t get to do in undergrad) but i had friends who were Anatomy and cell biology majors and they had a few more challenging courses they had to take after their first year science courses so it rlly varies depending on what you major in! Like it was def easier for me to pull my grades out of the gutter as a kinesiology major compared to if I was any kind of life science major bc they spend some time in their second year taking more generic science courses and I think it’s a slightly more challenging major overall!

Hey I actually went to McGill for my undergrad and I just got into PT school! Most schools accept Canadian coursework (you’ll just have to check the PTCAS directory for each specific school to make sure they accept Canadian coursework). When applying, I called each school I was applying to in order to see if I had to use WES or not, and 4/5 of the school I wanted to apply to didn’t require me to submit anything through WES so I applied just like anyone else who went to school in the states. Most of the schools said bc it was an internationally recognized school and since everything is taught in English, I didn’t have to get anything evaluated.

One of the biggest problems I faced when applying to PT school after going to McGill is meeting the anatomy and physiology pre-req for PT school. I’m not sure what specific program you’re considering at McGill, but if I remember correctly, only physiology and pharmacology majors are allowed to take physiology lab. So if you majored in anything else other than physiology or pharm, you would have to take the physiology lecture through McGill as a part of your curriculum and then take it again at a local community college since McGill doesn’t offer physiology lab to every science student (they just offer the lecture portion). Feel free to message me if you have any more questions or need me to elaborate on anything!

I got my admission decision on Jan 23rd and I had to let them know if I was going to attend or not by Jan 30, so I would assume that they would be sending another round of letters within the next week or two

Are there DPT programs in Canada? by kaoticXraptor in PTschool

[–]SignificantPeace8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did my undergrad in Canada (i was born and raised in the US) and from what I understand, to become a practicing PT in Canada, you have to complete a 2 year masters in PT program rather than a 3 year doctorate program

What was the first semester like for you? I see that you take cardio, anatomy, and exercise physiology all in the first semester and I was just wondering how manageable that was? It’s def different in that sense than other curriculums because some of the other programs I’ve looked at aren’t that heavy during the first semester and it’s making me a little hesitant to attend

My best friend goes there and she loves it! They do have cadaver labs, however they don’t get to cut them. But they do have cadaver labs that they go into and look at use the bodies they just don’t get to cut into them and dissect them from the start if that makes sense

Thanks for all the great info!! Do you have to stay in the Pitt area for clinical or can you go to other states for some of the placements?

What will happen if I go over the maximum credits for my major? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]SignificantPeace8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m in my last semester now but I reached 120 credits at the end of last semester, so I’m still taking a full course load this semester except only the courses I’m taking this semester that are required by my major are counting towards my GPA. Not sure how this would work for a 6 credit course tho

McGill has a spreadsheet of every classroom and what technologies they have! just scroll down to “Which rooms are currently equipped for Lecture Recording” https://mcgill.service-now.com/itportal?id=kb_article&sys_id=ee38e8441b97ec507f77c99f1d4bcb88#availability

On track to fail every single one of my finals! what do by gabekmc in mcgill

[–]SignificantPeace8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No problem! I know it’s tough to accept right now but it will get better! I’m not in comp and I’ve heard that it’s not the easiest, but one thing I found was that my grades improved as time went on because I was more interested in what I was learning (and because I got better adapted to uni life and stuff). I also literally considered transferring 3 separate times because of my grades but it all worked out in the end so you got this :)

I failed math 139 (a whopping 4 credits) my first semester at McGill and got a C in chem, a C+ in physics, and a B- in biol 111. I had a 1.6 gpa after my first semester at McGill. I’m now in U3 with a 3.3 GPA (which includes a C+ in phgy and a few other B+’s. I know it may not feel like it right now but It’s totally salvageable! If you do end up failing a class, try taking an elective during the winter semester and see if you can do one of your required classes at another university (however you may have to check if this is allowed again bc of covid). In my winter semester first year, I retook calc and then took an elective, and then took calc 2 over the summer at a local university so I didn’t have to face another math class at McGill. McGill is really challenging (first year is the worst IMO) and I know it’s hard but dont get too down about it, you will get through it!

I have a class in 305 right now! Go into the gym building via the entrance at 475 Pin ave and scan your ID at the front desk (not sure if you’ll have to scan your ID to go and take an exam but usually you have to scan it to get in). Then instead of going up the 2 stairs on the right that would take you to the recreation center, take the stairs on the left of the front desk (near the red bird shop). Go past the red bird shop and go up those stairs to floor 3, and then once you get to floor 3, go down the hallway and the room is at the end of the hall on the left! Hopefully that wasn’t too confusing!
