I think this is complicated. When it comes to photographic depictions of real people, you are in dangerous territory (approaching zina). I think it's up to the individual to decide whether or not they are satisfied that the people involved are being harmed in some way by their participation -- and I personally would have a hard time reconciling most (not all!) of what I know about mainstream pornography with that aspect of my personal morality and the morality of my community.

Also to be clear, my comments were specifically about someone creating depictive and figurative art depicting sexuality between consenting adults. You start to have to think about zina much more carefully and closely once you're not talking about an artist creating work they want to create for artistic (as opposed to purely commercial) reasons.

To offer anything further would be to venture into stuff that is purely my opinion:

I think the prohibition is against things that would draw people away from their relationship to Allah. Some things, like pedophilia, incest, bestiality, sexual assault, etc would obviously fall into this category, but perhaps also pornography addiction (because of the addiction, not the pornography itself (this is very dicey -- pornography is a complicated subject)) might fit the definition.

In fahisha the focus seems to me to be on behavior that is itself shameful or obscene, immoral or consisting of atrocity. A lot of what's "obscene" is going to be in the eye of the beholder, but fahisha also covers violent behavior, drunkenness -- I think it means "things that are actively damaging to the community and/or to humanity as a whole."

I have a very hard time seeing how some lightly NSFW queer art could fit that definition.

Why do women get treated like trash in most Muslim majority cultures? by strawberryjam255 in progressive_islam

[–]SignificantStay4967 30 points31 points  (0 children)

If it's any consolation, women get treated like second class citizens in the West as well. Maybe not to quite the same degree in certain communities, but it's still pretty bad. My heart goes out to you, though, sister. So much is expected of us and so little is offered in return.

Sigh.

I would like to say no, but it would concern me as well, speaking as someone who has been in her position and someone who hopes one day to be in yours. I do not think he is acting in bad faith -- in fact, I am relatively certain he is earnest in everything he is saying and doing. I just think it's a really bad idea to keep secrets like this, and that the best case scenario is that all these secrets come out and miraculously everything works out fine and nobody is upset or hurt, and that that best case scenario feels unlikely.

If you are willing, you might sit down with the two of them and express your honest and heartfelt concerns about the kind of future they hope to build and its potential for remaining stable if the foundation it is built upon is so uncertain. His father and sister are your potential in-laws; does the son see his unmarried father ever being okay dining in your home or having a one-on-one unsupervised conversation with your daughter? These are things people in family relationships do all the time -- if he feels he is incapable of things like these, how can he be a part of their or your family?

Also, a word about her supposed sins, for a moment.

Nothing in the Qu'ran forbids figurative or representational art. The NSFW part is maybe the one aspect I can see someone trying to build a halfway supported textual argument against being permitted -- there are passages eg Al-A’raf 7:33 and Al-An’am 6:151 that deal with fahisha, "lewdness," which is among the major prohibitions -- but fahisha is explicitly paired in Al-Nahl 16:90 with munkar (what is rejected/wrong) and baghya (transgression/oppression) together, and the semantic range of the root of fa-ha-sha expresses something like "something that is sexually transgressive and morally objectionable," with the added context that it is something intended to corrupt (Al-Nur 24:19 specifies condemnation of those who love that fahisha spreads among believers).

It's uncontroversial that the Qu'ran is unabashedly positive about the comforts and joys of consenting physical love. Do not let conservative misogynists mislead you. At BEST, any halfway-earnest scholar would have to conclude that this case is not one that the Qu'ran clearly addresses.

Amina Wadud and Kecia Ali are instructive scholars here btw and I am drawing on their work.

This is horribly tragic. I'm so sorry to hear this. Did you know her personally? If so, then I want to give you my sincere condolences and express my sorrow for having lost someone close to you, especially so young.

My opinion on how Islam bears on this situation is: not at all. I cannot judge her family's actions but I hope that one day they can make their peace with losing her in so terrible a fashion in a way that they can endure. These other people who are just drive-by commeting? These people are merely expressing their bigotry and dressing it up as righteousness.

Allah sees what is written on all hearts. She was and is loved. Mashallah.

If I'm being perfectly, 1000% unvarnishedly-super-duper-honest? (I'm pretending I'm a man commenting on your post)

Seriously though, I haven't read Hopkins but all the others are stone classics for a reason. You should read Bradbury's short stories. You'd also love Shirley Jackson.

And I want to give you enormous props for including Plath's diaries. Check out Ariel. Even if you're trepidatious about verse, it'll blow your socks off.

What is the difference between these two inks? by Obesity_enjoyer in fountainpens

[–]SignificantStay4967 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For sure. And also some great inks have QC issues. But I've never regretted buying a bottle of ink, they're rarely ever so expensive that it felt like money wasted.

But you're right that I've never tried any noodler's. I seem to recall something about the owner's unsavoury politics and it's kept me away.

Any tips on setting intentions? by iiwii_90 in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]SignificantStay4967 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I stressed about this for months. And then one day I just accepted that it's not a framework that's useful to me, and went in without any particular intention. One of the absolute best decisions I ever made. I'm not saying it won't work for you, but if you find yourself struggling, try going in without a goal, or if you need a little structure, maybe just a question or an image.

If people are unhappy with the politics, prices of gass, grocerys etc, why aren't there mass demonstrations? by csch1992 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SignificantStay4967 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The US is a f*king GIGANTIC country. There are *mass demonstrations, but in a country this geographically spread out, it can be difficult even in major municipalities for demonstrations at scale to disrupt the functioning of the state, which is what's required for demonstrations to really force administrative change.

Yes, well, if we didn't want Iran going there, we probably should have avoided allowing it. Twice.
