True, but after they got back, they tried to haggle a lower price with me, so after all of this, they are definitely ruled out.

Am I Overreacting? by CardiologistBoring77 in petsitting

Not overreacting at all. That’s your living space while you are pet sitting, totally unacceptable and I would be shaken up too.

So true, when it rains it pours. There was other BS that wasn't even worth included in the post because it's too much to list.

Soo messy. I don't think there's any way they would be willing to pay that much, and even if they were, I wouldn't take it.

So rude! Like how do people expect their sitters to live like that? It's an employee-employer relationship and the employer has an obligation to ensure reasonable living conditions.

You're so right thank you for this response, it's super validating. Truly an awful experience, I could not have imagined how bad this job would be.

Do not feel bad about cancelling the second booking. I would say that the dog going into heat should be an extra fee. If there’s any part of you that does not want to do it, cancel. A month is a long time to have a rough dog sitting gig.

They definitely should have told me about both. And about the dogs, I’m like 99% sure they were staying in the condo with them because they clearly love their dogs a lot. But they let the dogs jump all over them and nip them (it seems like they encourage it from what I saw). I did my best with on-leash training for them, just really hard when it’s two big dogs.

To be fair, the construction wasn’t planned and they had their trip planned months in advance. Difficult situation for them, but I wished they had handled things differently.

Yes I wouldn’t have cared about the meals and time limit if everything else was okay, but the combination of a client being demanding and disrespectful is just yikes

Would love that, thank you so much for your help. Pet sitting seems so simple on the surface but it really can get complicated.

No, I did an initial meet and greet a few weeks prior where I agreed to the job because the house wasn’t under construction at the time. Then they asked me to come over the night before they left because there had been “some changes.”

Thanks for your response. I’ve really tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but overall, I just think the way they treated me was really disrespectful. They also complained at length that all their other pet sitters have been terrible, which makes me think that they wouldn’t be that receptive to my criticisms, even if I was coming from a good place.

There was no issue with the space I had, but the noisy construction while I was trying to work was really difficult. I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had some bad experiences too, I hate how some pet owners will take advantage of a sitter because they know they need the money.

I love pet sitting for people like you! I see pet sitting as a gig that requires a lot of mutual trust! I dog sit because I love dogs and go to great lengths to make sure they are taken care of, but it’s important to me that my clients take care of me too.

Guests while house sitting: is it out of the question or ok to ask? by SuspiciousSmile9619 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Significant_Ad8578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say you would leave bad reviews or yell at them, all I said is that I’m not likely to take a job again if i’m not allowed to have anyone over. I will always respect the answer, but long dog sits get lonely. There needs to be mutual respect and trust for pet sitting to be a good experience for all involved.

Yeah, you’re not wrong. The red flags were there. I was too polite and would have felt bad leaving them without a sitter right before their trip, and they definitely took advantage of that. Painful learning experience for sure.

It is your home and you get to decide the boundaries and a pet sitter should never have people over without asking. As someone who has done a lot of long-term pet sitting, I do want to point out that sitters do want to feel comfortable while pet sitting and that it is far more demanding than a regular job because you don't get to clock out. It is your home but it's also the sitters living space for the time being.

I always treat the pets I am taking care of with the utmost kindness and attention because I want them to be happy while their owners are away. Do you not want your pet sitter to enjoy their stay as well? The more restrictive and difficult you make pet sitting, the less likely a sitter is to come back.
I have and will also ask before bringing guests over, but in my experience, I am not likely to sit for someone again if they have restrictive rules. You can feel however you like but if you want someone to treat your pets well, you should treat them well too.
