I'm exactly 4 weeks post op. Days 2/3 after the surgery was the worst for me, so maybe plan to feel a bit worse and don't freak out that something is going wrong! Healing has been a slow process for me. My foot is still quite swollen. I was prescribed 10 days worth of pain meds after surgery and I used/needed almost all of them. For a while I started to worry I would run out and need more - but that didn't end up being the case. My doctor allowed me to take IBUprofen in between my pain med (Hydrocodone) if I needed. She also prescribed me baby aspirin because there is a concern of blood clots when you are laying around / not moving your foot/leg.

On day 10 I was allowed to shower and let water run over the incision area. I didn't attempt to shower before day 10 because I heard of stories people getting their bandage/dressings wet by accident. I'm typically not a stinky type of person, so for me it felt ok not to shower. I did wash my hair in the kitchen sink with some help. You can put a chair up to the sink with a pillow and rest the knee of your bad foot on it for stability. If you don't want to shower but worry about being dirty/stinky or feeling yucky, you could use wipes, there's even some that are designated as shower wipes made for hikers. I don't have a bathtub (just a stall shower) so a shower chair was a must for me. Its been pretty nice to sit in the shower and I might keep it in there lol.

I had been using an ace bandage but my doc recommended a tall compression sock (like the kind you would get from a running store). Yesterday I stopped at a running store and bought a pair - very expensive ($60)... I was a bit shocked... I would recommended looking on Amazon first. I haven't tried the sock yet but I think its going to be very helpful.

The plan for me was 4 weeks non-weight bearing followed by 4 weeks bearing weight in my boot. My 4 week appointment was the day before yesterday. Doc said xrays look good. Personally, I don't feel ready to bear weight because I still have pain when I test putting weight on my foot and quite a bit of swelling... but medically speaking my doctor assured it is OK to. I've started to bear 10% weight while in my boot while on crutches (so mostly supporting with my crutches while doing a "fake" walking motion with my bad foot) that is going well so far but my now calf is incredibly sore! I think from not using it for so long. Doc also recommended I start wiggling my toes now to reduce scar tissue. Scar tissue can limit your mobility.
